Puck Daddy - NHL

Between Sidney Crosby's off-the-faceoff pummeling and this Alexander Semin fight with Marc Staal in the Capitals' 2-1 win over the New York Rangers, this is shaping up to be the most awkwardly surreal day of hockey pugilism in recent memory:

The local coverage of the fight in D.C. is here, and announcer Joe Benenati is correct: It literally looks like the Washington Capitals winger is attempting to play the bongos on Staal's chest at the end of the fight.

Have you ever seen anything like this from an NHL player? Semin looked like one of the gorillas from "Congo" trying to skull-crush an intruder. Or like Staal had just stolen his Nintendo DS, and Semin was doing the "give it back jerk" two-fisted cluster-pummel you see from aggrieved 13-year-olds. Or, as one YouTube comment read: "Semin looked like a transvestite beating up it's cheating boyfriend on jerry springer."

We don't want to say Semin might need a few mandatory lessons in technique from teammate Donald Brashear ... but we're also quite sure a punch during a hockey fight isn't supposed to look like this:

In case you couldn't tell from the game misconduct he received for not having his jersey tied down, this was Semin's first NHL fight. His last documented tussle according to HockeyFights.com was against Cory Larose in an AHL game back in 2004. We'd love to see footage from that tilt. Then again, we'd love to see footage of any hockey fighter who looks about two slap-punches away from attempting a noogie on his foe.

Yes, it is oddly coincidental that Semin and Crosby both throw down on the same night, considering their recent history. After seeing them in action, these two really need to drop the gloves when they finally face each other this season. It's guaranteed Sidney throws the first punch ... but we're rather confident Semin will still have the best drum solo.

All I can say is that it was a good thing Semin wasn't a Montreal Canadian- he would be an all-star enforcer 1st team.

It'll be tough to see Semin and Crosby fight the next time they play...since Semin doesn't ever take face-offs.

If you want the exact opposite of a post-fight stick-tap, check out the Washington bench from the Caps feed.

Wow what a girlie slap fight....I mean what a fruity display of fightin. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh mannnnnnnnn thats funny!!!!
Alright Semin..................if you are gay you get a pass. If not, you will watch the Man Show Archives for the next 6 months. Take the first flight to Vegas and play alternating games of Blackjack and Poker while smokin cigars. Pay Ty Domi whatever he asks to train you in the sweet science, and then spend 2 weeks on a strip club tour of Florida to do a final manning up. This is a league suspension and I am sorry but the NHLPA mandates it.
Wyshynski that stinks..................but man its funny! I mean we had the ball bag speed bag and now this. What moron would want to outlaw anything this funny?

Hey Cindy gets the righteous grief for playin whacky sack but his sucker punch today was all hockey. He gets a +1 for being a dirty little sucker. With a few years we could have a little ball of hate in the makin. Pat Verbeek is one of my all time favorites. He's on the all ages team with Dino Cicarelli.
Wyshynski Crosby stinks but I see potential.

Semin, what a waste of a name. He fights like a little girl. You think with a last name like his, that he actually be able to throw a few punches. Loved how the guys on the bunch were all smiling and trying to without the laughs.

almost as surprising, Wade Redden getting some good chin music on Clark.
Crosby must remember, he who lives by the cheap shot, dies by the cheap shot. Keep taking cheap shots at guys, and they will retaliate. And then everyone will cry about hockey being too violent.

I never thought a hockey player could throw weaker punches than baseball players, I am both ashamed and embarrassed for the sport I love so much. To paraphrase Mr. Smithers, I think fighting and Semin don't mix.

Good thing the Caps are 1st in the Southeast and 2nd in the Conference. Good thing the Caps are riding a 6-game win streak. Good thing the Caps have the best record at this point in the season in team history. Good thing Semin will probably score 40 goals this season. Because that has to be the worst and most embarrassing fight I've ever seen in 20+ years of being a Capitals fan. Semin, you can make up for this misadventure by scoring a ton of goals in the Stanley Cup finals this June.

You know what though? Having said all that, Semin did take down Staal, after all. So how big a wuss does that make Staal?
Looking at the video again, it reminds me of the scene at the end of A Christmas Story where Ralphie flips out and starts pummeling the bully kid. I think Semin is getting sick of guys cross-checking him in the back and getting injured as a result. But there are some players who can take matters into their own hands, and there are others who can't. I don't even think Bradley and Clark should fight -- they've been getting smoked lately. Just leave the fisticuffs to Brashear...
