Alex Ovechkin's(notes) first NHL (and previously only) NHL fight occurred on Dec. 2, 2006 after a hit from behind on Danny Briere(notes) drew the ire of Paul Gaustad(notes) of the Buffalo Sabres. The venerable panel on HockeyFights.com gave the bout to Gaustad.
On Sunday night at the New York Rangers, and with his team trailing by four goals, Ovechkin delivered an impressive hip-check to Rangers defenseman Dan Girardi(notes) and then engaged Brandon Dubinsky(notes) in a fight at center ice. A few Dubi upper-cuts later, and down went Ovie.
Seth from Empty Netters with the line of the night: "I guess since Dubinsky is from Alaska, he saw Ovechkin coming from his back yard."
Here's how the partisan announcers on CSN Washington saw it. Notice the connection made to Sidney Crosby's(notes) fight in Dallas earlier this season:
As rare as an Ovechkin fight is, seeing him deliver a highlight reel hit has been astonishingly rare in 2010 as well, when compared to his career body of work. The Capitals need that fire now, as a loss against the Rangers would but them in a 6-game winless streak (0-4-1). The next five: Anaheim at home, at Boston, at Ottawa, New Jersey at home ... and then the Penguins come to town.
