Sports Illustrated today released its best and worst owners in sports rankings, basing its decisions on the following criteria:

The method was not scientific but based on numerous factors, some of which are indisputable and some of which are intangible. Among the criteria used to evaluate owners was the willingness to spend money to improve the team; the stability and capabilities of the front office and management; the amenities at the team's venue; and the club's culture and interactivity with fans. Of course, weighing heavily in the decision was the team's success or failure on the field.

To the surprise of exactly no one, Mike Ilitch of the Detroit Red Wings took the top spot for the NHL's best owners. Even if Papa John's tastes better than Little Caesar's.

The rest of the top five: Jeffrey Vanderbeek of the New Jersey Devils, cited for getting an arena built and maintaining the franchise's stellar level of regular season success; Mario Lemieux/Ron Burkle of the Pittsburgh Penguins, for a new arena and a great draft record when given a top-two pick; San Jose Sports and Entertainment of the San Jose Sharks, for "franchise cornerstones such as Jonathan Cheechoo(notes) and Patrick Marleau(notes)" but apparently not Evgeni Nabokov(notes) or Joe Thornton(notes); and Peter Karmanos for the Carolina Hurricanes, for firing Peter Laviolette.

But you don't care about the top five; you care about the bottom five. And the good news for the Tampa Bay Lightning is that they aren't, inexplicably, in it.

And here it is:

5. Predator Holdings LLC, Nashville Predators
4. Atlanta Spirit, Atlanta Thrashers
3. Charles Wang, New York Islanders
2. Alan Cohen, Florida Panthers
1. MLSE, Toronto Maple Leafs

The Leafs getting the top spot is both an attention grabber and, let's face it, pretty understandable. Wang and Atlanta Spirit belong on there as well.

But Alan Cohen at No. 2? With the Panthers coming off an outstanding regular season (by their standards), with a bright young coach and an arena that beguiles even if it isn't always filled to the gills?

The Predators at No. 5, with total stability and competence in team management and in a state of constant playoff contention? The first line in the recap was rather cheap: "No offense to the Music City -- it's just not a hockey town."

A reference to Hamilton at the end of the Preds entry is an indication that this ranking was done well before the Phoenix Coyotes hit the fan. Which is fine; deadlines are what they are.

But there's simply no way the Tampa Bay Lightning's Oren Koules and Len Barrie aren't on this list based on the last season. Not after Barry Melrose. Not after the Dan Boyle(notes) fiasco or the Radim Vrbata(notes) fiasco or the Ryan Malone(notes) contract or the 89 defensemen shipped in and out of the lineup or the alienation of one of the best fan bases in the Eastern Conference. And that's without even bringing up their financial woes or anything involving Vincent Lecavalier(notes).

Look, we don't want to say this omission invalidates the list, even if it does. But honestly: Has there been another ownership group that negatively affected a franchise as quickly as these guys have in the span of a year?

(We hold out hope, by the way, that they've figured out a thing or two about a thing or two after Year 1 and turn this thing around next season. We genuinely like Koules.)

Good read Greg. I agree on the Cohen issue, he doesn't belong in the bottom tier there. But SI is about as up-to-speed with hockey as I am with the ESPN national spelling bee, so it doesn't surprise me that much.

How can Wang be a bad owner? He is a screwball but but he has lost over 300 million keeping the team in Long Island. If it weren't for Wang the Isles would have moved a long time ago.

come on, all heavily commercialized pizza tastes like the inside of a porta john.
if only little ceasers was like mineo's in squirrel hill....
i can't help but laugh at the leafs being number one. so very true. but i'm sorry, the lightning DO belong there. buying players does not buy you championships (see NYR), especially when overpaying for the likes of ryan malone... great guy and solid player, but not worth what he's making. the market is insane.

Understandable in terms of fans were getting frustrated, but MLSE has since relinquished their meddling ways by putting Burke in the top job. The mismanaging I believe is being halted because of the minor success the Raptors have gained when not being controlled ruthlessly in the back rooms by MLSE. I think it's beginning to turn around and MLSE won't be the worst for long.
That said, in this league, it'll take a lot to get to the Cup and the Leafs are nowhere near. So if winning a championship is the only way people start thinking that things are a wasteland in Toronto, then nothing will change here.

Not sure I agree that TB's owners are all that bad. Sure, they made some dumb personnel and coaching moves, but they haven't been there long enough to make hockey irrelevant in TB or to make the team bleed red, which is what seems to infect most of the other Worst Owner choices, MLSE excluded.
Ted Leonsis wants to know who he has to blow-- I mean, who he has to know-- to get on the Best Owner List.

    @Jared:
Wang can be a bad owner because he gave an unproven, fragile goalie a 15-year, billion-dollar contract.
Wang can be a bad owner because he hired Neil Smith, only to lose him a month later because the owner wanted some convoluted, MLSE-style management structure.
Wang can be a bad owner because in an era when other team owners are successfully extorting new arenas out of local s#ck, er, taxpayers, Wang can't even get his proposal to a vote at the local council.
Wang can be a bad owner because he doesn't appear smart enough to leverage the legacy of the Cup-winning teams to: sell tickets, build a new arena, build a successful team.
Any idiot can lose money. The auto companies prove that every single day.

Rocky Wirtz not in the top five should invalidate the entire list.
And yes, it seems like Koules and Barrie have made it a mission to get on the bottom-five list next year, if not steal away the title from MLSE.

Ed Snider got shafted. How many other owners have owned and repeatedly iced contending teams for as long as he has. He is the reason that Philly is such a strong hockey town and he is has a lot of involvement with the community. Additionally, the Flyers are his passion in addition to his business. The ESPN list is very short-sighted. Hmmm... lets only look at the past year.
Both Little Ceasars and Papa Johns are to Real Pizza Parlors like Steak Umm is to a Real Cheese Steak. Simply poor imitations.

The Wings are the best at circumventing the salary cap, by signing players to extra years on the life of their contracts. This policy may work for now. But, if the cap continues to drop, they could pay for this strategy later. You know they will try and sign Hossa at 7 Mil year for the first five years, than stretch the life of the contract out to over 10 or 12 years. Thus, dropping the Cap hit in half for those first five years. I see them doing the same thing with Linstrom next year, but with less years. What happens when someone does this with a player who knows they only want to to play one more year, but signs for 10 years and than retires after that first year. It makes a mockery out of the cap rule. I could see clubs up against their limit, doing this to get around the salary cap.
