(Ed. Note: Much like they didn't in the conference finals, the Hurricanes' eulogy hasn't arrived yet. Hang tight. Meanwhile ... as the Stanley Cup Playoffs continue, we're bound to lose some friends along the journey. Gone but not forgotten, we've asked for these losers to be eulogized by the people who knew the teams best: The fans who hated them the most. Here is St. Louis Blues loyalist Sean Gallagher of St. Louis Game Time fondly recalling the Chicago Blackhawks.)

By Sean Gallagher

No one ever wants to be in this place, this spot, doing this duty. No one wants to attempt to speak about the positives of a young life snuffed out too early. It's too traumatic and too sad and too tragic. It breaks hearts and ruins lives. Eulogizing the end of a young promising life is just too hard.

Unless, of course, we're just talking about the young Chicago Blackhawks and the end of their season.

Oh, we had our laughs and our good times. It was so much fun to hear Hawk fans continuously repeat the mantra of "Brian Campbell makes some crazy mistakes, yes, but we'll take those in stride because of all of the positives he brings to our team."

Until, of course, he makes a no-look behind the back pass that results in an overtime game-winner for the opposition in the playoffs.

We similarly enjoyed the ridiculous dichotomy of a 20-year-old captain whose nickname is ‘Captain Serious' and whose playoff beard is more "Elvis' sideburns" than it is "intimidating." Because really, who doesn't get joy from a young man whose overriding reputation is for being serious? The fact that his playoff beard looks like some sort of bad movie disguise has had our Absurd-O-Meter pegged for weeks now.

And who could overlook the goat-turned-hero-turned-goat story of the year? Overpaid and underperforming Nikolai Khabibulin(notes) is placed on waivers at the start of this year. Unclaimed, Khabibulin becomes a man possessed, stealing the starting job from Cristobal Huet(notes), who had been handed the job. Khabibulin plays great, right up until he blows a 3-0 lead in one period in the playoffs, allowing the Red Wings to get back into the game. The ‘Bulin Wall' doesn't come back to finish the game and is never seen again on the Hawks bench; presumably sent to a present-day greater Chicagoland-area Gulag. Likely the Woodfield Mall.

Honestly, what better city for a goat-to-hero-to-goat story could there possibly be? Thank you, Blackhawks.

Oh, but as with any young life, we had our tears. Not as many as Patrick Kane, of course, but still. Naturally, not a one was shed by former St. Louis Blues blueliner Matt "Big Country" Walker, who seemed completely unaffected by a digit on his hand that looked like it belonged on a road sign in "Pee Wee's Big Adventure."

In the end, the Second Youngest Team In The NHLTM Blackhawks just could not get it done against the scourge of the Central Division Detroit Red Wings. For those of us who found a way to root for you through clenched fists, as we hoped you'd find a way to beat the team that shall not be named, you've done nothing but disappoint. Not only do we all need Silkwood showers with wire brushes to scrape away the layer of filth we've now accumulated, but we're also forced to now root for the Eastern Conference in the Finals.

Seriously? We now have to root for King of the Dirt 'Stache and Neanderthal Malkin? Great. Thanks a ton, Chicago.

In the end, not even Jesus could save the Hawks in this series. Joel Quenneville, a man who we consider to be a bit of a Hockey Jesus himself for his coaching skills and as "Keeper of the Secret of How to Break "The Trap,'" was even at a loss, going so far as to equate a controversial penalty with the end of times.

But let's be honest, Q; you got a five-minute major on a controversial call yourself. The 'controversial' hit that Niklas Kronwall(notes) employed to send Martin Havlat(notes) to the great hockey waiting room where he got to hang out with Paul Kariya(notes), RJ Umberger(notes) and Eric Lindros(notes) for a couple minutes kinda went your way, did it not?

But let's not dwell on all of the negatives of this young life snuffed out. There will be time to talk about the decision-making abilities of a man-boy who decides to self-apply the nickname "Showtime" and calls his personal stick graphics the "Candy Kane" pattern later. Instead, let's look back again at the positives.

The Blackhawks, celebrating the death of their longtime owner Dollar Bill Wirtz, capitalized on finally having a successful young team; putting their games on regular television and finally launching some solid fan-based marketing schemes that lured wary fans back to the United Center, selling out most of their home games for the first time since the days of Roenick (pre-going ballistic and two-handing his high school buddy Tony Amonte in the face), Chelios (pre-stabbing Chicago in the back) and Belfour (pre-"one billion dollars...BLEEAAAARRRGH!").

In the end, the Young Exciting Blackhawks® managed to do well enough to earn the curse of the popular: They became the winter home of the Bandwagon Fan. In the stands, talking about how they've been "hard core fans since the days of Scott Larmer and Bob Proberb" as they model their sideways vintage Hawks hat and their fresh new Toews jersey as they try to catch the attention of the jailbait across the concourse in their pink Kane jerseys.

In the end, the Hawks died a valiant death, falling in five games in a series that could easily have gone seven if a couple overtime bounces had gone their way, leaving their fanbase to either (hardcore fans) bury themselves in the bottom of a bottle full of dark brown liquid; or to (Bandwagon Fan) toss their replica jerseys on the floor of the closet as they pull their Cubs "Prior" jersey off the hanger and get ready for yet another long summer of disappointment and sideways vintage hats.

But do not cry too much you fans and surviving members of the Hawks fanbase. Because today there is at least one person with a smile on his face. Somewhere, looking up and laughing, Bill Wirtz is thinking, "All that money spent and what, exactly, did it get you?"

I'm a big fan of the original 6 teams and have always liked the Blackhawk logo...I am an even bigger fan of my Hometown Detroit Red Wings and that will never change...Chicago has nothing to be sad about...the Blackhawks will be at the top of the Western Conference for a long time...I am looking forward to many Western Conference Finals between these 2 teams in the years to come!

When did being a fan become more about taking schoolyard potshots at the opposition than about supporting your own team? I'm not sure the Blues have much room to criticize Chicago in any case.

Ya know they call Chicago the windy city because it blows right lol. Just like the slackhawk fans do right lol. Loved the Ovechkin-like celebration Kane put on after he FINALLY scored in the series, i guess in Chicago one goal and like -9 is reason to party right lol. Must suck to be you right lol. After the game Martin Havlat said " Hey someone answer the phone! Hey! The phone is ringin! Hey someone answer the dang phone! Doesn't anybody hear that dang phone ringin! lol. Next year the hawks can bring what they learned to the playoffs and the wings will bring THE REST OF THE TEAM LOL. Abdelkador? Leino? Cleary? Errickson? That #43 kid that scored last night? The guy they called at home to come in and play "D" last night? Chelios? Thats who Whupped your Windy city Windy be hinds right lol. Ozzy's the worst goalie in the playoffs right lol lol lol. The wings are to old and slow to play with your speedy young stars right lol. Now the blue Jackets, the Ducks and the Blackhawks can get together and tell each other how the penguins are gonna fix those nasty old, slow red wings right lol. Just like the Blue Jackets (Nobody wants to face these guys in ythe first round right lol) or the Ducks ( Their to experienced and physical for those "soft" red wings right lol), and the blackhawks ( their younger and faster and hungrier than the wings right lol). Now the Penguins (their driven by last years wuppin right lol) Ya all will be a great foursome on the golf course soon tellin each other how bad the wings are right LOL and by golly just wait till next year lolololol

St. Louis fans shouldn't be allowed to write about the failures of other teams, considering how many cups they won. How many playoff games did they win this year?

@icyork - Its called sarcasm dude, dont be another dumb A$$ hawks fan. I.e. the bandwagon ones he was referring to.
Hawks were a pushover team. Everytime the wings came to play the hawks had no answer. 36 seconds left and the wings turn up the gas, it takes a miracle save by a frenchmen to prolong the hawks season another 4 minutes into OT. Penguins stand no chance.

First off, NO! I won't go to hell. I'd get too bored and no reason for Detroit fans to go to hell. I think all fans should come. While I'm glad to see that Detroit is heading for the finals, I'm disappointed that they are playing the Pens again. I was hoping for a Detroit/Boston game. Eh, oh well. The Blackhawks did play well. I'm proud of you guys!

For any Blackhawk fan that is complaining about a Blues' fan writing this eulogy and trashing the 'Hawks: stop acting like he can't talk simply because St. Louis has never won a Cup. Their drought is shorter than Chicago's. That being said - this eulogy ruled. The thing that made me snort up my bowl of cereal at 2:30 in the afternoon was the "jailbait on the concourse" comment. This guy's good.

@joakim @jmh do you fellas remember our exchanges from the last week? OUCH!!
where is theregothehawks and cantgetanywirtz the other big talkers? prolly licking each others wounds among other things!
@brian k i hope you look at this as a learning experience. remember MJ lost to the badboys before he beat them. i look forward to many great games between these legit rivals. im glad my oldest nemesis has returned!

    to habs1rule in post 7...
5 year plans? plural? The last time the Blues made the playoffs was the season prior to the lockout. This year they made the playoffs and moved up to the 6th seed (which sucked to play a hot Luongo and the Nuckies). They were the hottest team down the stretch moving from dead last to 6th. If that's mediocre, then maybe you should look at the mediocre Habs...
On the Eulogy, very nice. Remember, even Michael Jordan showed up at one of the games to pay his respects...

I cannot believe the noob BlackDove fans that do not get that these eulogies are supposed to be sarcastic and are not filled with serious facts. Like a roast on Comedy Central? Yes, in the name of sarcasm, names were spelled wrong...to point out that noob fans wouldn't know the difference. Of course there are real fans, newly acquired and long time suffering. But, get a grip and re-read all the other eulogies to get a clue about the flavor and intent of these wrirings.

nice to see the hawks a viable team again. Love those original six games. Chicago will be cup chasing for few years to come. The great swami predicts the wings in six. To all of you Penguin fans that make it clear you hate the Red Wings, please understand that us Red Wing fans understand your jelousy. If my team owner wasn't willing or smart enough to put together a winner I would probably feel the same way. It's hard being the best. hossa came to Detroit to win, maybe sid the kid should do the same. Wings in 6

Wow, I thought I'd never say this, but you Red Wing fans are worse than Red Sox fans. I'm happy for Chicago. They made the playoffs for the first time in too long, which is a great season in my opinion. They exceeded my expectations by getting to the Conference Finals. This is a huge step forward and this team will only improve. I grew up with the Roenick/Chelios/Belfour Blackhawks, and it's great to see them successful again. And Red Wing fans, I can say this for once and actually feel good about it.......wait 'til next year (it may be Chicago, but it ain't the Cubs, so say all you want). Go Pens, and remember, Chris Osgood has been overachieving all playoffs long. If you think I'm just saying that, see his 3.00+ GAA and sub .900 % from the regular season.
