The notion of the Anaheim Ducks trading star defenseman and occasional blogger Chris Pronger this season still seems a tad outrageous. The Ducks are sixth in the Western Conference, with a roster that features cagey veterans back for a championship run (Teemu Selanne and Scott Niedermayer), a few young stars and two capable goaltenders.

Yet you look at that conference race, and you see eight teams within six points of Anaheim. You see creeping inconsistency, with the Ducks going 4-6 in their last 10. And you read assessments like this from Lyle "Spector" Richardson about Pronger's future in Anaheim:

It wouldn't make sense for Anaheim to move Pronger because he's the only top-six defenseman they have signed for next season, but some pundits are now suggesting if the Ducks fall out of the playoff race by the end of February the once unthinkable could occur and Pronger could be dealt.

The unthinkable is thinkable. Former Ducks GM Brian Burke may have shot down the notion of Pronger coming to the Toronto Maple Leafs, but he also matter-of-factly stated what Pronger's trade value is this season. The answer wasn't a "what if," but rather a "when it happens." There have been rumblings for weeks, with potential suitors like the Philadelphia Flyers being mentioned because of their blueline needs. Last night, buried in the bottom of a story about the New Jersey Devils' new marketing efforts, Star Ledger beat Rich Chere added to the intrigue:

Although [Devils GM Lou] Lamoriello will not discuss such matters, the Devils are believed to be among the teams interested in acquiring defenseman Chris Pronger from the Ducks. The clubs likely to be frontrunners for the big blueliner are the Devils, Bruins, Capitals and Canadiens.

Say what you will about the guy's attitude and reputation -- lord knows we have -- but he's still an elite, physical defenseman who logs an average of 26:47 a night. Adding him to any of those teams would have a transformative effect.

The Boston Bruins with Pronger and Chara? Sick. The Devils or Washington Capitals with Pronger as a defensive lynchpin should scare the bejeepers out of the rest of the conference. And even with another year on his contract at a $6.25 million cap hit, the Devils and Capitals could probably both afford him for 2009-10.

Until the deadline, we can debate whether a Pronger trade is fact or fiction. But his addition to one of several potential suitors could change the dynamics of the quest for the Cup. Provided, of course, that his mischievous elbows don't cause him to miss too much time for disciplinary reasons. He really has no control over them, you know.

Are you kidding me? The Devils never get big names at the deadline, and they woulden't add that big of a salary either. Well unless your name is Zubrus.

TOP 6 on D is correct. What would the Ducks do. Pronger it seems is the locker room guy that keeps things going on and off ice and his leadership is important. But....if he is to go east, I hope for the Bruins. GOOD FIT...

I'm ducks fan and i personally think we are on the downhill. practically everyone is going to be a free agent and we are gonna be left with almost nothing. if we can get a couple of solid guys for pronger than i say do it. i'll take this season so we can have a better future than what we're gonna have

Yeah, but what would Pronger's wife have to say about all this?

Pronger is not the locker room guy, neidermier is, was, will be until he retires.
Also, Pronger remains a thug, one who gets gentle pats on his bottom when he should get the book. Since Marchment name anyone with more cheap shots? more potential life threatening or career ending ones? He is the school yard bully who is 3 years older than his classmates. His skill set has always been be big.
Chara is 2x the defenseman he is.

I agree he is a bully, but still productive.. I would have thought he was the guy in the locker room that makes things happen, kinda like Malkin ( but better english ). maybe Chris should put up $1,000 to motivate his guys in the locker room between periods. OR !!! get a copy of the speech Malkin gave and they can try to translate it..

One, if the Devils are rumored to be interested in a guy, they are not trading for him.
Two, the Devils would never add a big name at the trade deadline, particularly when they are doing so well.
Three, they would never add Pronger or someone like Pronger considering his escape from Edmonton and his general, well, you know.
Four, Mrs. Pronger has already said she doesn't want to live in New Jersey.
Watch for the Devils, if they make a move, to have it be like last year's, as they sent Janssen west for Salvador. A favorite, if not exactly good, player, for a no-name but suddenly amazing defensemen.

Also i would hate too see him go to Boston, i like how they play this season, and who do you give up to bring stupid penalties and bad choices at bad times in for?
they are good because the young guns are gunning even with Kessel disappearing since he got sick (killing me in fantasy). Any changes there would have to be cheap and prooven.

pronger would be a godsend in philadelphia, but i don't see that happening unless the ducks suddenly love daniel briere. because he fits their style of hockey so well. then again, a goaltender would be nice too.
the washington defense is desperate for toughness. the bruins don't need him, and the devils...maybe.

Chris Pronger is Hal Gill with some semblance of talent.
Keep him off the B's. They'll have cap problems as it is (Krejci and Kessel, anyone?).

The Bruins already have too many defensemen... They dont really need Pronger. Especially at the cost of giving up young talent

"Devils ... sent Janssen west for Salvador. A favorite, if not exactly good, player, for a no-name but suddenly amazing defensemen." For those of us in the West, Salvador was at least as well known as any of the Devils D, and better than most. The question out here at the time was why your erstwhile rivals from across the river would want a smaller, overpaid version of Garden favorite Marek Malik (Christian Backman) instead of the far more physical (a huge need there, then and now) Salvador in the first place, and why none of the Devil fans were gloating over the steal.
As for Pronger, I disliked him in St Louis, disliked him in Edmonton, and dislike him on the Ducks; I would love to see him head East, and don't much care where. :)

Chara and Pronger is a sick combo the size alone would scare any forward, if the Bruins manage to swing a deal for Pronger the Bruins should be in the finals and possibly win the cup. But it is the cost and I think the Bruins are just fine with Chara, the only team that could swing the deal is the Caps.

    To Tommy:
The Devils never get a big name at the trade deadline? Does Alexander Mogilny in 2000 ring a bell? Or Doug Gilmour in 1997? Even Grant Marshall wasn't a name, but his assist on the Freisen goal in 2003 in Game 7 vs. Ottawa was essentially the Cup and made him a big pickup.

...you know, the Blues need blueliners...we aren't completely out of it...he's still a fan favorite in the gateway city - in fact, as a Blues fan, I was less depressed by the lockout than I was with them trading Pronger immediatly after...and with some of our speed up front, his big outlet pass would become very usefull...you add Prongs to the Blues, then get McDonald back, throw in some consistant goaltending...and all of a sudden, the last place team in the confence could be the favorite for the 8th seed (maybe even better if we get on a run).
    MAKE IT HAPPEN, JD!!!
