Chris Osgood's(notes) groin wasn't healing. Which is never a good thing. So the Detroit Red Wings goalie met with Philadelphia groin specialist Dr. William Meyers (now there's a business card we wish we had) and will go under the knife.
General Manager Ken Holland told the Detroit News that tests on Monday confirmed "a significant tear." Prognosis: 6-8 weeks on the shelf.
"Unless there are red flags along the way, you're talking about anywhere from late February to mid-March (about Osgood's return)," Holland said.
Osgood is two wins away from catching Grant Fuhr (403) and six behind Glenn Hall (407).
The Red Wings called up Joey MacDonald(notes) from Grand Rapids to back up Jimmy Howard. MacDonald, 30, played 18 games in Grand Rapids and was 10-7-1 with one shutout. He had a 2.70 goals-against average and .898 save percentage.
"We have confidence in Joey, we signed him for just this situation," Holland said.
In 73 career NHL games, MacDonald is 18-38-9.
Best of health, Jimmy Howard.
