Meet David Guralnick. He's the one diving face-first into the Stanley Cup like Big Brown into a feedbag. He's also a photographer for the Detroit News, and a pretty darn good one based on his body of work. This image appeared on the paper's Web site under the headline "Self Portrait," with Guralnick lamenting the fact that he passed on drinking from the Cup in 2002, and clearly not letting the chance skate by in 2008. His industry peers on SportsJournalists.com are debating the ethics of his actions, with the initial post calling it "particularly fan-boy homerish."

C'mon ... it's the Stanley Cup. People love the Stanley Cup. Even Will Leitch loves the Stanley Cup, and I'm pretty sure the last hockey game he watched took place in "Chasing Amy." The key phrase in Guralnick's caption: " ... when the Cup came my way in the locker room." In other words, he wasn't asking for it. Something glorious gets passed your way, you don't turn it down. It's a rule to live by; as Bill Clinton and Barack Obama taught us, you can even still go on to run for the President of the United States.

even ghostface loves the stanley cup. he wants to drink rum from it. and about a million other things, judging from all the wu-tang songs he raps about the cup in.

It sounds like the Wings' players gave the Cup to him to drink out of, so I don't have a problem with it if that's the case.

Photogs have a strange relationship with teams they cover. The dude has obviously been there during past Cup runs. They know he's not one of them, but I give credit to the Wings players knowing that the experience goes beyond just the guys suiting up in the dressing room.
Hell yeah that photog should take a nice long gulp. And have his picture taken doing it.
But I probably wouldn't have put it on the site. That would be going in a frame at my desk or at home. Or on my Christmas card.

eh can't say i wouldn't do the same. plus it's no mystery that reporters are partial to the teams they cover they just try not to show it. were it a reporter it might be a slightly bigger deal, but he's not he's a photographer he's opinions are meaningless unless he starts photo shopping pictures or something.

Off that board, "You're not supposed to touch it if you didn't win it." Yah, obviously either there're exceptions to every silly superstition, or are you saying Phil Pritchard won it at some point?
If the players don't have a problem with it, and the caretakers don't have a problem with it, then I don't have a problem with it.

No one in their right mind would ever refuse a drink out of the Stanley Cup period exclamation point ever.A fully recovered AA member would say well I guess a little sip wouldn't hurt.Be serious.

If a player from the winning team hands you the Stanley Cup and says "here, take a drink" unless you are a player from another team the proper response is "Thank You" and you drink. What good is a great prize and perhaps the greatest moment in your life unles you can share it. I was in that position several years ago and was honored that a man whose name was on the Cup twice insisted that I take a drink. The washed up youth goalie in me will take that memory to the grave. Doesn't matter what you do for a living you take that moment if it is afforded to you.
