Puck Daddy - NHL

The Fourth Period had this one nailed last Monday: UFA defenseman Brian Campbell is now a member of the Chicago Blackhawks, signing an eight-year, $56.8 million according to TSN. Here's hoping the bridges in the Windy City have been reinforced as old man Wirtz spins in his grave.

Like we said in our coverage of Campbell-to-Chicago last week: "Campbell in Chicago is one of those perfect marriages -- puck-moving defenseman with 33 power-play points, coming to a team that was 24th in the NHL with the man advantage -- which naturally means it can't happen. But if it did, the jealously factor surrounding the Chicago Blackhawks would spike to Ryan Reynolds-is-dating-Scarlett-Johansson levels, if it hasn't already with Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews."

Color us jealous. The Blackhawks had roughly $14 million to spend this summer on free agents, and signing Campbell and Cristobal Huet to rather large deals eats up a huge chunk of that. The symbolism here shouldn't be lost on anyone: The biggest free-agent defenseman in hockey just committed to the Indian for eight seasons, and the goalie that led the last flavor-of-the-month NHL darlings in Washington will be between the pipes for four. If Chicago's time is now, these are the veterans that are going to be the backbone for the kiddie corps.

So what about Nikolai Khabibulin, whom Ryan Kennedy of The Hockey News assumes is gone daddy gone? Rich Hammond of Inside the Kings writes that he could be King Bulin rather soon.

Big disappointment right now on Free Agent Frenzy day: The Atlanta Thrashers, who were in the Campbell mix to the end. If this is a make-or-break week for GM Don Waddell, it's not off to the best start.

Columbus just made a splash: Mike Commodore signs a 5-year deal worth $18.75 million, per TSN.

Huet, Campell & Khabibulin total over 20M/yr for only those three players. I guess they will try and buy out Khabibulin to get under the salary cap.

agree, campbell is definitely no lidstrom. i still see him as a rent-a-player type who doesn't bring it when it matters. his defensive game is still questionable, especially during the playoffs he was rather sloppy. iginla made campbell look like a fool a couple of times in that series. offensive-d are good as long as they don't forget to play the actual position. sharks fan here that is happy san jose didn't dish out all the funds to keep this guy, i'm not sold on his value yet.

    He's also allowed 10 defensive zone Spin-O-Ramas a year.

This is a great signing for the Blackhawks and they absolutely did not overpay for him especially considering that Atlanta offered him more. Blackhawks got the best UFA defenseman and the best UFA goalie available this year. And with almost $17 million coming off the books at the end of the season (and maybe sooner) with Bulin, Havlat, and Lang's contracts being up and an expected slight increase to the salary cap, neither of these deals will effect their ability to sign players next year either.
Great day for the Blackhawks organization all around. Bravo, Dale Tallon.

It was very obvious from the beginning that Brian Campbell would not stay with the Sharks, he knew he would receive over $7 million a year, there are MANY teams with the budget. Shark's GM, Doug Wilson, will NOT sign a defenseman like Campbell for that amount. They do indeed have one of the lowest salary caps in the NHL. I was told my a source within the executive management that the Sharks do not generate enough income through ticket sales, because the arena is too small (sits 17,500) to allow them to be near the NHL salary cap range. It is a very conservative management when it comes to salaries. Honestly, I would rather see the Sharks sign an offensive players such as Malkin or Hossa for $7-8 million. The Sharks' goals against average was one of the lowest in the NHL without Campbell, so the defense structure does their job, but fail to offer an offensive attack and the Sharks rely too much on their offensive three for scoring. So, it would be nice to have Brian Campbell a great blue-liner defense that can can put points on the board - but he did nothing for us in the playoffs. It is very clear that Campbell went for the money, Chicago has been in a Stanley Cup run for many years, the Sharks have been but have failed miserably in the playoffs but, hey, the Sharks do not have any $5-7 million dollar players except for Joe Thorthon, which is WELL worth any amount for the Sharks.

Campbell is a great regular season player but in the playoffs he looks like a deer in headlights... guess that is why he signed with Chicago since they never get to the playoffs...
