Puck Daddy - NHL

When discussing the goaltending "trapezoid," I think it's important to disclose yet again that I'm a New Jersey Devils fan; because this post-lockout rules change was created, in part, to undermine one of the exemplary skills of their franchise player, Martin Brodeur.

Like other goalies, his ability to handle the puck as a de facto third defenseman allowed defensive systems to flourish. (The ability of a puck-handling goalie to contribute to a transition offense never really factored into the equation.)

How effective has the rule been in creating more offense and speeding up the game? Well, attacking players clearly have received more opportunities to chase down a puck in the offensive end since the goalie's movement is restricted. That's undeniable. As far as speeding up the game, Between the Pipes had a rather awesome take last season:

With the desperation of a person trying to catch an open face peanut butter sandwich before it hits the carpeting, goalies have to race out and attempt to get the puck prior to crossing the goal line in the corners.  If he grabs it, he still has to wait in some cases for his teammate to come by and pick up the puck, or he plays tic tac toe. However, if the goalie is unsuccessful he must gaze longingly at the puck on the other side of the line with the look that a dog has after seeing said peanut butter sandwich hit the shag.  He can't touch it, even though he could, because he'll get slapped.  Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think this speeds up the game.

The rule's effect on offense might be beside the point, however. NHLPA executive director Paul Kelly said the trapezoid might go the way of Crystal Pepsi because the rules change actually places the players' safety in jeopardy.

Like everything else rules-related in hockey these days, it all comes back to hits to the head. According to Darren Dreger of TSN, the NHLPA's competition committee may discuss measures against head-shots prior to the NHL All-Star Game. Included in those suggestions could be the removal of the trapezoid. From TSN:

Removing the trapezoid, the area behind the goal line where NHL goaltenders are allowed to play the puck, is another idea that will get discussed by the competition committee.

Some believe, the combination of forwards barreling in on the forecheck, protected from obstruction, and goaltenders not being allowed to freely move the puck have contributed to injury.

Paul Kelly wonders if Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Mike Van Ryn would have been in the same vulnerable position if Vesa Toskala had been allowed to get to the puck before Montreal's Tom Kostopoulos raced in to complete his check, resulting in a series of injuries to Van Ryn and a three game suspension for Kostopoulos.

Take a gander at the incident again:

In this case, I'm not sure if there was enough time for Toskala to get to the puck without leaving the Leafs' goal completely vulnerable. Maybe if Van Ryn takes on Kostopoulos and the puck whips around to Toskala closer to the crease. Who knows?

Not the best example, but still a valid point: Allowing the goalie to play the puck without restriction would certainly cut down on the suicide runs to the end boards we've seen in the last few seasons.

For obvious and partisan reasons, I wouldn't shed a tear if the trapezoid disappeared yesterday. But I've always felt that restricting the movement of a player defies some of the basic tenets of the game: Teamwork, flow of the action and the notion that we're watching the best athletes in the world on the ice.

Curbing one of a goalie's greatest attributes (at least for those who can play the puck to the correct sweater) never seemed all that laudable to begin with.

As the person who hates Marty Brodeur the most I love that the Trapezoid is there. However it should be. It is the only rule that penalizes skill.

Yessss! Stupidest rule change ever. Goalies should not be penalized for being able to handle the puck well.

Anything that eliminates the trapezoid is fine by me! Looking forward to seeing some goalies try to score again!

As a devils fan, I thik it does help the game by getting the forecheck going, so I have no problem with the Trapezoid. However, I think the rule should be changed slightly to accomodate the power play, that is, the team who has the advantage should not be bound by the rule during that time, like icing does not apply to the team on the kill.

Death to the trapezoid!!!Besides letting the goalie play the puck might actually lead to more offense either for or against. Most useless thing on the ice surface other then Scott Clemmensen.

I say if the goalie wants to act like a 3rd defenseman he should get hit like a defenseman does. Obviously that's the opposite of promoting player safety, but I think its stupid the goalie can come and play the puck like a defneseman without worrying about getting leveled.

Anybody who watched Patrick Roy over the years knows that allowing a goaltender to play the puck can increase scoring, not decrease it.
Speaking of Crystal Pepsi, anybody know where I can get my hands on some Crystal Gravy? Thanksgiving approaches...

Getting rid of the Trapezoid was one of my personal "5 ways I'd change the NHL". It was a dumb rule when they brought it in, it has no place in the game and it makes no sense. If they do leave the trapezoid in, and want to stop the goalie from using his god-given puck-handling skills, they should make the rule so the Goalie CAN'T touch it INSIDE the trapezoid. That would be more interesting....in the same way indoor lacrosse is interesting.

Wow ... maybe if this went through that maybe they will re-institute the 2 line pass, eliminate the shoot out, bring back the tie, and make it legal to hit Crosbaby again. Ya know ... play hockey again.

diehard_wings_fan13409643869037839393949 brings up a point. I enjoy watching hot shot goalies getting drilled behind the net. If they take away the trapezoid I hope the zebras will treat the goalies as equals if they have the puck, they should be able to be checked LEGALLY with no penality. BTW I've played goal since 6th grade with my next game friday, so please no hate mail from the goalie union, but I will take your body checks in the corners.

Trapazoid sucks, and too many new rules in hockey, and phantom penalties. Bring the game back to real fans. BTW, If Gainey doesnt add some grit and a big center and net crashing winger, Carey Price may soon be doing a Patrick Roy......"Get me the hell outta Here'.

The NHL has a long and storied tradition of undermining its best players and teams with nonsensical rule changes. (Bruce at Oil Droppings has a nice post up on the subject as it relates to substitution for penalties.) Let's not interrupt that now. ;)

There should never be a rule to minimize someone's skill. While were on the topic of Marty, can't stand to play against him but you've got to respect the skill. Along these same lines I think the league needs to do away with the Avery rule too. Come on now lets be fair. For Avery that was a skill......I'm just kidding.

The trapezoid & extra clutching penalties actually lead to further injuries. I'm ok with calling a penalty for holding, but it's sometimes necessary bc collisions are getting worse (more head injuries/concussions). A goalie wandering out of the crease leads to more scoring chances if A) the goalie can find a teammate breaking in solo to the opposition's or B) if he gets stuck in the trapezoid area looking to scramble back in the crease.

FINALLY!!!! they should never have implemented the trapezoid. The most absurd thing i have ever seen i mean seriously, a goalie can't even get the puck without the fear of a penalty. Goalies know the risky if they get the puck behind the net and to me it makes it more exciting. The less penalities the better the game will be

I would like to see the rule go away. Let the goalies play the puck at their discretion. If they feel they can play the puck then go for it but expect to get hit or obstructed on the way back to the crease.
