Puck Daddy - NHL

Since we're down to the final moments of postseason life for teams in contention, Puck Daddy solemnly begins a daily countdown to annihilation.

After last night's shootout loss to the Colorado Avalanche, there's a 48-percent chance that the Los Angeles Kings will be the No. 5 seed in the Western Conference, according to Sports Club Stats. There's a 58-percent chance their opponent will be the Phoenix Coyotes.

The No. 6 seed? The No. 7 seed? The No. 8 seed? Total crap shoots.

Sports Club Stats computes that there's a 28 percent chance the Avalanche can finish in sixth or seventh. There's a 24 percent chance the Nashville Predators will be the sixth seed, a 28-percent chance they'll be seventh and a 30-percent chance they'll be eighth. That's because they have a 2-point lead over the Detroit Red Wings, who have a game in hand.

Here's what the Chicago Blackhawks, San Jose Sharks and Vancouver Canucks fans want to know: The Wings will most likely finish sixth (21 percent probability), seventh (28 percent) or eighth (36 percent). Those numbers will shift depending on what happens with the Predators and the Phoenix Coyotes tonight (as well as the Islanders and Flames).

One team that sadly no longer matters in the West: The Columbus Blue Jackets, who Sports Club Stats says is out but whose tragic number from NHL Standings and Magic Numbers is down to two. We fire a cannon in your honor, sirs.

Coming up, the playoff pictures for the East and West, including the Thrashers' last stand. The full NHL standings and schedules can be found on Y! Sports.

All playoff percentages are from Sports Club Stats; the Tragic Number is from NHL Standings and Magic Numbers. The former is an industry standard; the latter is a site we discovered this week, and are hopeful that the figures are as accurate as those from NHL Playoff Race. Also: For the Percentage Chance of Making the Playoffs, we've included the figures from Hockey-Reference.com (HR), which is crunching its own numbers. It's listed with the percentage from Sports Club Stats (SCS).

Here's the playoff picture for the Eastern Conference:

How big is tonight's game against the Leafs for the Thrashers? A win increases their playoff probability to 23.3 while a loss drops it down to 8.6 percent, according to Sports Club. Which is pretty steep.

Boston's probability increases to 88.9 percent with a win over Tampa.

The Flames are hanging tough, but it's going to take a hell of a swoon by the Wings. Which probably isn't going to happen. But hey, Phaneuf's off the cap, right?
