Puck Daddy - NHL

As you all know, Sean Avery has been suspended indefinitely by the NHL for having a sense of humor. There's no telling how long the suspension will be, pending his meeting with Gary Bettman. Had he purposefully hit an opponent from behind, driving his head into the boards and injuring him, it would be a three-game suspension. Since he made a joke before the game ... well, all bets are off.

Interesting statement from Dallas Stars owner Tom Hicks tonight, if you haven't read them:

"I completely support the league's decision to suspend Sean Avery. Had the league not have suspended him, the Dallas Stars would have. This organization will not tolerate such behavior, especially from a member of our hockey team. We hold our team to a higher standard and will continue to do so."

Much more from Dallas Stars Blog. Wonder how Brett Hull's feeling these days?

More on this farce later.

this is so stupid. but really, i don't think hicks could have said any differently.
i agree he should've been punished, but indefinite suspension, that's a bit much. i wonder if bettman and co. can claim "it's not just because it's sean avery" with a straight face.

The problem was that he made these comments public and went after a player's personal life in a public manner ... Avery says much worse things on-ice to players but the ones who hear it are the players on ice not the entire hockey world ... he set out to embarrass Phaneuf with those comments and the Leauge suspended him to avoid an ugly incident ala the Bertuzzi/Moore incident ...
With tempers flaring if a Flames player would've gone after Avery and injured him then tomorrow all over the papers it would be about how the NHL is nothing but a goon sport by people who don't know the first thing about hockey

Everyone should go easy on Avery.
He is an overrated player, trying to catch up with expectations of a bloated contract that he will never live up to.
He doesn't have enough talent to fill Ovechkin's left skate, and he makes me yearn for the return of Claude Lemieux.
On top of all that, he lost one of the worlds hottest girls to a player with real skill, potential, and leadership.
So please everyone go easy on him, it isn't easy living life as a Grade A douchebag.

Bettman may have saved his life, as now he doesn't need to face Phaneuf.
On the other hand, Chloe probably just sent some secret plans to Jack's phone so Jack can go shoot him in the thigh.
Yep, I'm sticking to the 24 references.

Suspension? How about removing the instigator rule. That might be better / more entertaining. So, does that mean that Avery will never have to face a team that Phaneuf is a part of?

If I was to say this to a co-worker and they went to my boss and told on me.........this would not happen. So why in the world would it with a pro athlete. Absolutely ridiculous that this is even a suspension issue. I will say gonna be hard for Dion P to look at her legit from now on. That is kind of funny.

absolutely incredible to me that he has been suspended for this, and even MORE astounding is the reaction of their owner.
How dare Avery show he's human, with feelings and emotions and wit. Bettman will put a stop to any free-thinking player. A total FARCE.

I may not like Avery, but come on people, what did he do wrong here. It may not be a role model thing to do, but I would prefer it if players had guts while doing interviews instead of the same old:"We worked real hard and thats why we won" or "I respect every single player in the league".

Sean gets dumped by Elisha and then he gets dumped by milf Rachel Hunter. Maybe it is true, Sean Avery is probably the greatest gay hockey player in the NHL. His total joy of annoying Marty Brodeur last season in the playoffs makes me wonder if Sean has a crush on Marty. If I were Brodeur, I wouldn't bend over in front of Sean.

I'm not going to defend what Avery said, but the league overreacted to it because of Avery's past history. He gets it a lot. When other teams so illegal stuff on the ice to him, the refs look the other way most of the time. Its a trend that won't escape him.

    Comon guys,
the suspension isnt a big deal. In fact, I'd wager that suspension is exactly what Avery WANTED from this---attention whore that he is (and he is all about entertainment).
