The notion of Boston University taking on Boston College before (or after) the NHL's Fenway Park Winter Classic, as Metro reported yesterday, is a doubleheader even the overkill crowd could stomach. Two Classics in two cities on the same day is stretching the gimmick's relevance to the breaking point; an "outdoor hockey festival" in a single city is a wonderful idea.

(UPDATE: This from a good college hockey source -- "I’m hearing the college game would be in the weeks following the Winter Classic … not the same day." During the Olympics perhaps?)

The other part of that Metro report is that the Philadelphia Flyers are now the frontrunners to face the Boston Bruins in the Fenway Classic. (Frontrunners in Boston; go figure.) Please recall yesterday's news that GM George McPhee of the Washington Capitals, whose team has been considered the other Classic candidate, was doubtful about his franchise's participation on New Year's Day 2010.

Joe Haggerty of WEEI confirmed with an NHL source that the Flyers are now the favorites for the Classic, and adds some interesting analysis for why the Capitals aren't:

Several reports had named Washington as the leader in the clubhouse to take on the B's on New Year's Day, but multiple sources revealed to WEEI.com that there are concerns from NBC over television ratings with the Capitals - who are being pushed by the NHL to be the choice. NBC is instead campaigning for Philadelphia, according to one source, and the odds are improving by the day that the Flyers will be traveling to the Fens in January.

The lackluster playoff ratings for NBC during an opening round Stanley Cup playoffs matchup between Alexander Ovechkin(notes) and his Washington Capitals vs. the New York Rangers - the hockey team from the nation's #1 TV market - is believed to at least be partly behind the network's motives.

Hags goes on to quote several ratings figures to back up the claim. We'll defer to the Peacock here, but it does seem rather odd that hockey's biggest name vs. The Green Monster can't draw casual eyes on Jan. 1, 2010.

Hey, we're fine with the Flyers against the Bruins at Fenway, especially paired with BC and BU; if nothing else, there's at least the possibility of a lovely cascade of snow gently falling onto to the flying meat-hooks of Shawn Thornton(notes) and Daniel Carcillo(notes) during a Winter Classic brawl at center ice.

Plus, if the Flyers get this gig, that opens up another potential Classic down the line. One that we hadn't considered until recently: Sidney Crosby(notes) and the Pittsburgh Penguins against Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals in an outdoor game. That's how you get Ovechkin in a Classic and get your ratings, NBC.

If the Flyers play at Fenway, make Caps/Pens the Penn State game the NHL's been circling for ages. And have the AHL's Hershey Bears vs. the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins as your doubleheader game. Done and done.

Great idea, Push for the Flyers who just got eliminated in the first round and who just got rid of their goalie in place of the Caps who are obviously on the upswing.

I'd rather see a divisional matchup. B's v Habs/Leafs would be pretty good. The only problem is that the Leafs are just about guaranteed to be no good and the Habs could go either way depending on what happens this offseason and whether they can keep their players out of the clubs nights before the games.
That being said, Flyers are a good pick and so would the Caps. I think between the B's, the Flyers, and the Caps there should be a decent race for first in the Conference around that time. So long as Emery keeps his head on his shoulders and the Caps do what they need to do this offseason to get players that, you know, play defense.

Personally as a Flyers fan, I'd like the Penn State game to be a Flyers Vs. Rangers game, Save it for not this season but next season. That or Flyers vs. Devils would be an awesome matchup.

Could it be the reason the rating was bad in the first round was that the Rags draw flies for national ratings. It seems every time they are on the ratings seem bad

Yes, America's most beloved park until one gets to go to a game there. It is fun the first time, looking out at the Monster..err...Maaahnstah but it is really quite the piece of crap stadium.
As for next year, I would not pin too much on the whole Penn State thing...if this is at Fenway, 2011 will be in Canada. Unless Bettman figures out how to merge Edmonton and Calgary and move them to Jacksonville, Toronto to Las Vegas, Montreal to KC and Vancouver to Mexico City.

Uh, no. The Pens already got their game. They need to get to the back of the line.

    Pens-Caps in Happy Valley!
    Or
    Pens-Flyers as a second choice.
    Rangers suck, why bother.

I've in Philly and DC for 4 years each. They probably chose the flyers for ratings. Philly is huge hockey/sports town with loyal fans. Even with Ovie, DC isnt really a hockey or sports town. Last year when I lived in DC (2008), the games I went to at the Verizon Center was mostly empty except for fans that visited from other cities (like the islanders or pens or rangers)

Flyers and B's would be fun, but not the matchup I'd be looking for. I'd rather the Flyers take on the Rags or Caps, seeing how the Pens already had their Winter Classic moment.
Bsically I just want to see someone get punched, outdoors, in the snow, while I'm nursing my hangover. Thank God for the Flyers.

Of course you would; against the Penguins they'd have no chance, especially if they don't do the smart thing and trade Richards and Carter for some guys who won't choke on a big stage.

As a diehard Pen's fan, I wholeheartly agree that we should wait for a while before being repeated for the winter classic. Get some first 12 action going before going back to the well that is Pittsburgh. However, Penn state should always be a "Backyard Brawl" between Philly and Pittsburgh.
Do any other cities in the same state have such a sports rivalry? I'm sure there are hockey rivalries greater than Pens and Phillies, but there's something about black and orange vs black and gold.
That being said, I don't love the Capitals, either. So they might work as an opponent.
The thing about the Winter Classic is that it should be played against teams that care/hate each other so that the players put some effort into it. Detroit v Chicago was good this year.
I just don't want to see Coyotes v Panthers.

YGL13, you must have been going to games before Hanlon was fired or for the first several games with Boudreau as coach. By the end of the 200702008 season, the Verizon Center was starting toi get packed. Try going to games at the Verizon Center now. During the playoffs, neither fans of the Flyers (last year) or fans of the the Rangers or Penguins this year were much smaller nthan in prior years.

Agree with #8, Pens already got thier game. If its ratings they want they would put Detroit vs the Pens but both teams just had an outdoor game so f that. Flyers and Bruins is a good one, but I am a bit surprised it wasnt Bruins vs Habs. Curious to see what thier jerseys will look like and I am hoping it isnt powder blue like the ugly azz Pens jerseys were. They look great on women but realy? powder blue? i wonder if Sidney picked that color out.

Don't forget, it's usally a day game on New Year's day, so all the Flyer players will be hung over from the previous night doing what they do best (as the Flyers' coach and GM have attested to), PARTYING!. Oh, they could probably just "stay up" and play. Regardless, they'll lose to the Bruins.
I vote for Canadians vs. Bruins. Save Philly vs. Pittsburgh @ Penn State for later. Sorry Capitals.

So two outdoor NHL games is overkill, but an NHL game and an AHL game isn't?
