Montreal Canadiens GM Bob Gainey restated the obvious again this morning on CJAD Radio, telling the host that winger Alexei Kovalev(notes) will not be back with Montreal next season.
Just as he did last week during the Free Agent Frenzy, saying "... this would mark the end for Alex with the Canadiens." As he did by virtue of signing free agents Mike Cammalleri and Brian Gionta(notes) to huge contracts. The next step was probably a squadron of airplanes flying over the city, skywriting bilingual proclamations that Kovalev's done with the Habs; let's hope it doesn't come to that.
Dave Pagnotta of The Fourth Period is on the Kovalev story, so check out his Twitter feed for updates. His potential destinations are tantalizing if his price comes down. Where do you think he fits best?
If nothing else, Gainey's announcement may put an end to the burgeoning "Save Kovy!" cottage industry that's exploded in Montreal in the last week.
It started with online petitions begging for his return to the Habs' captaincy and a rally outside Bell Centre on Sunday attempting to sway Gainey to keeping him. From CTV:
Fans of Montreal Canadiens player Alex Kovalev used the power of the Internet to organize a rally outside of the Bell Centre Sunday afternoon, in the hopes of keeping him in Montreal. Kovalev supporters were at the Bell Centre's Centennial Plaza from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Organizers used the social networking site Facebook to plan the event, and more than 18,000 people have signed so far signed two online petitions in support of "Kovy". On the Facebook page for the event, there are dozens of comments from hockey fans of all stripes. "Kovalev!!! He's a player of the people!" writes Dima Moz.
That's all you got, Kovalev fans? Thousands of people will send 20,000 pounds of nuts to a television network to keep some crappy sci-fi show on the air, and you get 100 people at Bell Centre?
Well, at the very least, we now know that Phoenix Coyotes fans care twice as much about losing their team as Canadiens do about losing Alexei Kovalev, based on the numbers ...

Amongst the teams that can afford him, I think Minnesota and Los Angeles make a lot of sense.

But still, that's 100 of the wierdest fans. Any team has a few of those oddballs. I'm sure you can find 100 crazy leafs fans that think Harold Ballard was the savior of the franchise, or have their entire life decorated in Leafs memorabilia.

I LOLed.

Kovalev gave his best during his 5 years in Montreal. He wanted to win there, and the fans knew and felt it. Gainey left his brain in the dressing room when he decided to give fortunes to overrated players such as Gomez and Gionta at the cost of losing Kovalev, who produced more than them in a difficult context over the past two seasons.
The fans are right. You are wrong to ridicule them.

I give Bob this year - he has now made the team what he wants it to be, or the best he could do. He had a ton of cap space, and he remade the team to what he wanted. If the team tanks, he deserves to be gone. I'm just willing to give him this year to see how his moves work out. We can't do anything about the signings and trade now anyway, may as well let it play out and see where it goes. A new GM won't be able to really do anything significant between now and the start of the year anyway.

Doesn't matter if I'm an "enabler" or not, if I approve or anything you say either, for that matter. This is the team we are stuck with for this season. Nothing anyone says is going to change that. I'm going to cheer for the team, even through my reservations. Like it or lump it, this is the team Les Canadiens are going to roll with this year, RFA situations and further signings afterwards exempted.
Nothing you, I or anyone else on this board says will make any difference. Since I don't like wallowing in negativity, I try to at least see the positives in any given situation. There IS an upside to all this, no matter how hard you deny it. I'm just not convinced it's going to happen.
Again, if this year turns to crap, and the moves don't work, I'll be calling for Bob's head as much as you. This is his chance to make the team the way he wants it to be - if it doesn't work, its HIS head. But no matter how much you froth at the mouth, the owners aren't going to fire the GM after letting him spend their money on FAs and hire a new coach. Like seriously, its not going to happen right now. I'm not an enabler (not that Gainey cares in any way what I have to say anyway) just a realist. He's not getting canned until at LEAST the all-star break, and that's only if the season is a complete and utter disaster many orders of magnitude worse than this year (they were actually competitive until the all star break). Like 10 games out of a playoff spot or something.
