Puck Daddy - NHL

Nearly all of the Marian Hossa conversation this morning centers around the Edmonton Oilers. GM Kevin Lowe told the Edmonton Sun that the numbers on the rumored $9 million, nine-year deal for the Pittsburgh Penguins UFA are "a little bit inflated," but he also said that owner Daryl Katz will "do whatever it takes and spend to the cap." Hey, remember when the Oilers were bleeding big-money stars and were the poster children for "small market" woes in the NHL? Yeah, neither do we.

The economic moves that would allow the Oilers to afford Hossa with their current roster are rather interesting, and Lowetide has its take on their validity. In summary: It was nice knowing you, Dwayne Roloson.

Meanwhile, New York Rangers writer Sam Weinman believes that Jaromir Jagr will get Hossa's sloppy seconds in the NHL, and that Hossa's decision in regards to the Rangers will decide Jagr's future with the Blueshirts.

But forget the Oilers for a second: Can the Rangers afford Hossa after breaking the bank for Wade Redden during yesterday's free-agent frenzy? Mudcrutch over on MC79hockey.com believes that they're facing the same kind of economic lineup decisions as Edmonton:

Looking at the Rangers roster with the signings of Michal Roszival and Wade Redden. If they went minimum wage for their fourth line and two press box forwards, their seventh defenceman and backup goalie, they'd have $8.6MM for Hossa. I can't see how that gets it done unless he really wants to be there; the Rangers would end up being very shallow up front and I don't really see who they can move to fix things. If TSN is to be believed, that leaves the Oilers, Canadiens and Penguins. Montreal would be risking the creation of a cap nightmare long-term or the loss of a bunch of guys already on their roster, given the presence of Carey Price, Tomas Plekanec and Mike Komisarek and the Penguins are already in a position where they can't do it. If TSN is right about who's in it, I'd think that the Oilers are better positioned than anyone, provided that they can find somewhere to get rid of the excess salary.

What about the Penguins and Hossa? They're still in the hunt. But should they drop out, Post-Gazette columnist Bob Smizik believes Jagr would be an awful replacement. We disagree, as we're rather eager to see what a Jagr/Michel Therrien feud looks like.

I see Hossa in Edmonton as a real possibility. Rangers effectively pulled themselves out after the moves they made yesterday and Edmonton took a bigger step forward wth their moves (dumping Torres).
Should be interesting, but would love to see a so called small market team get a big time free agent, especially a canadian one.

I don't like the idea of having Hossa with the Oil. It just doesn't sound or feel right...we don't need a player with such a price tag at this stage. I know D. Katz wants to make a splash, but by all means? What's gonna happen in a few years when the development of the kid-line progresses as planned and they need to be re-signed?? No cap space then...Lowe has found some excellent additions/ trades so far and with a healthy team, The Oilers should be more than going in the right direction and strongly contend for a play-off spot.

I don't thinkin bringing Jagr to Pittsburgh would be an awful replacement. He can still put points on the scoreboard and would probably put even more points than he did with the Rangers if he is with Malkin or Crosby. That probably wouldn't happen though, cause I don't see Jagr wanting to play in Pittsburgh. If he doesn't sign with the Rangers, he'll probably go to Russia and play.

Rangers have about 12 mill, if they move some dead weight: hollweg, backstrom, etc. So Hossa is doable, but will curtail any chasing or Orpik...and will rail them right against the cap ceiling.
but they can go over 10%, at least for now, if memory serves.

Hossa is going to wreck any team that he signs with for the long haul. $8M is too much to pay for any hockey player. Unless they could clone Gretzky at his prime.

I don't really agree with this, but as far as a third player making north of 8 million/year, I don't think the Pens should bother with Hossa. I think Jagr would be a better wingman for Crosby or Malkin. Plus he'd still get booed when he touches the puck for a few games in Pittsburgh, which would be funny.

I thought Jagr hated Russia. Isn't that why he wears 68? Isn't that the year Russia invaded his homeland? It must be more about the cash now then the principle of it. I think the PENS should give up on Hossa and try to sign Orpik and Ruutu. They can probably find 1-2 mid range guys to help the team. Does anyone else think that letting Conklin go for a mere $750,000 was a HUGE mistake?

Hossa should go to Tampa Bay. They seem to like ex-PENS and they have no understanding of the salary cap or picking a quality coach. Melrose at least should look better sporting a tan with that MULLET.

What people are trying to get Hossa for is a joke. He is a good player, but he is no team carrying player, and team carrying players are the ones that make that kind of money. I just don't want him to sign back with Pittsburgh, because I want them to do real bad after all the fans talk about "the dynasty" that the Pens will create...Anyways, why don't these dueche bags sign with somebody already and quit making us wait.

The only problem with Jagr is that he really isn't much of a team player I don't really thing things will fly between Jagr Crosby & Therrien even tho i sometimes think that Therrien is a shmuck ...Coach Lemieux??? ha ha if only...

Some things in the NHL never change, big market teams get the big market players end of story. Have to build your team through the draft and trades if you are Edmonton or Calgary...
Too bad, Hossa must be some kind of a flake to jump from Pit to Det for less years and .4 mil more. If I were a Pens fan I would be bitter.

Perhaps it wasn't the money, perhaps he wanted to play for a contender. Anyone without a jaded view has to agree, between the coach and the fire sale the Pens aren't near as attractive as the Wings...

As far as my "jaded" view...of the places I thought he'd have ended up, stacking an already stacked deck for Detroit wasn't one of my forseen places...
