Puck Daddy - NHL

The difference in games played for Bob Probert between the Detroit Red Wings (474) and the Chicago Blackhawks (461) is negligible, but there's no question he cemented his reputation as the most feared fighter in the NHL while wearing the Winged Wheel.

Which is why his public support of the Blackhawks in the Western Conference finals -- dropping the ceremonial first puck, telling Jonathan Toews(notes) "good luck, kick their asses" -- isn't exactly endearing him to the Red Wings faithful:

Now, in fairness, Probert didn't use kid gloves on the Red Wings after joining their division rivals; fighting such Detroit names as Darren McCarty and Brendan Shanahan(notes), whom he fought after taking a swing at Chris Osgood(notes). The Blackhawks have also embraced Probert as an alumnus, including him in their "Heritage Night" celebrations this season.

If nothing else, maybe Probert should have borrowed Mama Chelios's Frankenjersey, because coming out to the ice clearly Committed to the Indian has cheesed off some Red Wings supporters.

From Terry Foster of the Detroit News (via Snapshots): "He played half of his career here, where the Wings helped him battle chemical dependency. People here still love the Windsor-born enforcer. There just might not be as many after that appearance."

Michael Mrock of the Bleacher Report: "Chelios does wear Probert's old No. 24 on the Wings. However, he was only on the ice for about four minutes total, so the 'Hawks couldn't exploit his lack of speed."

Steve Schrader of the Free Press: "Former Wing/Blackhawk enforcer Bob Probert stuck to his guns Sunday after dropping the ceremonial first puck and told the Chicago Sun-Times he was rooting for the home team. So in his honor, Chicago went out and spent 56 minutes in the penalty box. But no hard feelings. Whaddya say we let Probie back on the Wings' bandwagon next round?"

And that's the question: Is Probert's decision to back what is apparently the wrong horse in this series forgivable for Red Wings fans, or is he now "Former Blackhawks goon Bob Probert" in the press clippings?

Also, in a more general query: Have you ever had to stomach one of your favorite players in any sport "sleeping with the enemy," before or post-retirement? This coming from someone who still can't believe Gary Carter's in the Baseball Hall of Fame as an Expo.

Detroit gave up on Probert. Chicago welcomed him.
He has a place in his heart for both teams... but I love what he said to Johnny that night.

The Wings did not give up on Probert. He was present during Steve Yzerman retirement ceremony. Stevie mentioned his name a few times, and the crowd loved him.

Probert is just as irrelevant in Detroit as hard work and a paycheck.

The worst part of the conference finals and then the finals is that the off days have to be filled with stories about "something". Even if that something amounts to nothing. Oh well. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy Puck Daddy. But a guy who played for any professional team is free to chose to whom he will be most closely associated with post-retirement. I say two cheers for Probert who had a great career with two historic franchises.

we got Probie, you got Chellios.. I think Chicago came out ahead on that deal... enforcer standing behind your own net for minutes on end.

The hardest part of Sundays game was watching Probert come out in a Hawks sweater...like when Lindsay crossed over.
Probert and Kocur are the link between the Dead Wing era and the Renaissance of the Wings- started drawing upwards of 15, 000 when the Bruise Brothers reigned and the team was still stuggling.
wade: Detroit didn't give up on Probert, he had become unmanageable. The same reason he was awesome on the ice became the reason that he couldn't cope off of it. Wings fans will alwyas love Probert. His 1988 year was the best individual year I've ever seen: All-star game (1a) 398 minutes in PIMs, undisputed Heavyweeight champ -and broke Mr. Howes playoff points streak as a young Wings team challeged 99's Oiler dynasty. Great year to be a Wings fan.

Probert was entertaining during his days with the Red Wings, but stop to count how many Cups his cult-like status as the "ultimate enforcer" brought to Detroit (or Chicago for that matter). If he wants to align himself with the Hawks instead of the Wings, that's his affair. It always seemed like Probert was always for Probert anyway. God bless him. Thank for the memories - the good ones anyway.
For my money, Joe Kocur is the guy that gets my respect as an enforcer, a grinder, and a person - much more than Probert. They both collaborated on a book last year that was pretty entertaining: "The Bruise Brothers". It's a great read for all fans of hockey.

    Pruck Fobert.
After everything the Wings put up with and after a welcome back into the fold of Red Wing alumnus at Yzerman's jersey retirement... he pulls this? "Kick their asses"? Really?
Go do another line, Bob. Rail one up and chug some Crown Royal.... I'll meet you at the titty bar.

I am a lifelong Hawks fan (since 1971) and Probert IS a Red Wing...that same afternoon, the Hawks had Marty LaPointe, also a Red Wing, signing autographs as a Blackhawks' alumnus. The Hawks may not have a championship legacy, but I'm sure the front office can find more heritage Blackhawks for these PR opportunities. I have no problem with the time that both Probie and LaPointe spent in indianhead sweaters, but when all is said and done, will they be remembered as Hawks or Wings?

It's not just that Probert had his best NHL days in Detroit, but he also hails from Windsor, Ontario, right across the river from Detroit.

Gary Carter played 12 years in Montréal, 5 with the Mets, and 1 each with the Giants and Dodgers.
He won the Gold Glove with the Expos 3 times, never with anyone else. He was a 7 time all-star avec les Expos, only 4 tmes with the Mets. His best season for NL MVP voting (2nd place) was 1980, with the Expos.
What cap do you propose he should wear?
Please, memories of Gary Carter are all that Montréal baseball fans (both of them) have left. Don't try to take that away from them.
