So at what point during an 82-0 loss in a women's ice hockey game do you turn to your buddy and say, "C'mon, finish your popcorn and let's beat the traffic?"

Because Slovakia led Bulgaria 31-0 after the first period (.pdf) of their 2010 Winter Olympics women's ice hockey qualifier over the weekend in the Latvian town of Liepaja. After two periods, they led 55-0. If you're Bulgarian and still in the arena during the third period, chances are you're either one of the players or someone who also refuses to leave the worst movie ever made because you paid "good money" for the ticket.

The 82-0 defeat capped what may have been the most pathetic tournament appearance in international hockey history.

Bulgaria lost to Italy (41-0) and Latvia (39-0), and it followed its 82-0 loss with a 30-1 defeat to Croatia (who obviously must address its defensive shortcomings before Vancouver in 2010). In total, Bulgaria's women's ice hockey team surrendered more goals in four games (192) than the Detroit Red Wings did in 82 games last season (184).

Our friend James Mirtle had the best wrap-up of the 82-0 carnage:

Down 77-0 with three minutes to go, Bulgaria put in its backup goaltender, who promptly let in another five goals on five shots in just 1:25 of playing time. The game's final shots on goal were 139-0. Slovakia had 12 players record hat tricks, including one 10-goal scorer, one nine-goal scorer and four others with eight.

Mirtle also points to this story from a Bulgarian media outlet that actually stands up for the women's team and takes the government to task:

The embarrassment, however, ought to be directed towards the Bulgarian Government rather than the ladies. With a population of 7.4 million, only three indoor ice rings in the country and only 37 registered female players, Bulgaria could have hardly hoped for a successful run in the competition, although this ruthless and systematic destruction was nothing short of a national embarrassment.

While some believed the 82-0 defeat could have been the worst loss in ice hockey history, Eric McErlain of FanHouse writes that it's not even the worst loss in women's hockey history -- that would be a 1998 game in which South Korea barely survived a scare against Thailand, 92-0. Still, Bulgaria's 82-0 defeat set an IIHF record.

The chair of the Bulgarian Hockey Federation is calling Slovakia's 82-goal win "a kind-of an insulting mockery" that's "not at all sportsmanlike." We're counting down the moments until he lashes out at the glib reaction of the international sports media, which refuses to acknowledge goalie Liubomira Shosheva's amazing 57-save performance. Considering, you know, she faced 134 shots in 56 minutes.

That is truly the funniest line I've read all summer.
These numbers remind one of the wildly successful Kansas City experiment of the mid-1970s (and starting in goal for the Scouts, number 30, Martin Brodeur!).

Why yes I do....thanks! I'm a skunk. I used to be a Whale fan too before they became the Toilet Swirlies. Pat Verbeek was the kind of little POS that I like. They even had one or two of the Hansen Brothers play for them. Good team...shame.
What did Brodeur have to do with the Scouts???

    skunk man,
    i'll draw a map
new jersey devils were the colorado rockies before moving to the meadowlands
the colorado rockies were the kansas city scouts before climbing up the mountain to denver
so you see brodeur is the goalie for the new jersey/colorado/kansas city devils/rockies/scouts
    get the correlation?

I need to at least see part of this game. I cannot imagine a team letting in 82 goals. Thats more than a goal per minute. Did the chick have any saves?

Wow - I didn't think you could get 82 shots on goal - let alone goals. And 57 saves too. Wow - that's like an NHL team playing a peewee house league team. Why even have them (those two teams) in the same tourney?
And George Bush (sr and jr) didn't invade the Middle East - its all in your head. The world is flat too. You've been watching a very bad B movie.

    Input "Super Slick Puck" Code.
    Input "No Golaies" Code.
Put team of all computer controlled Fat Guys vs. team of all human controlled Skinny Guys.
Set Speed to 5 and Periods to 20 minutes.
    Start game.
    Put down controller.

They sound like the hockey team that I played on last season in a Michigan Beer League. We could score 12, 14 goals a game and our goalie would give up 15, 18. We tied one game last season. 17-17. Our goalie got a hat trick on himself. He scored 3 times all on his own for the opposite team.
Thankfully I won't be a part of that diaster again.

I don't know who's worst, the Bulgarian goalie who lets in 82 goals, or the one Slovak player who didn't record any points. Everyone one else on her team has at least 8 points! She sucks, trade her to Bulgaria. Does the slovak goalie still get a shutout even if she didn't face any shots?
The only explanation to allowin 82 goals, it that she was not looking at the game and instead watching that chick in the stands from the picture. Man she's smokin'!!!

I think the bulgarian women's team is made up of min mites. Actually that is insulting. Cause I dont even think the mini mites would get beaten that bad. Hell I bet any mini mite team could beat the bulgarian women's hockey team.
I have played hockey since I was 5. The worst loss I ever suffered was when I played on the JV hockey team in high school. We lost 15-1 to st. anthony's high school which has a juggernaut of a hockey team.

My guestion is how many of the Bulgarian women were skilled enough to actually skare around holding a hockey stick and how many were still pushing around a metal chair? A 41.0072 save percentage makes me wonder if the goalie was actually trying to get out of the way of shots. Unfortunately, tourneys like this use goals for and against as a tie-break so there is a motivation to run up the score. (Still pretty pathetic.) If the country can't field a team that can actually compete maybe they should think twice before registering.

I think 82 goals is a little unsportsmanlike. Unfortunately, once you're up early like 10-0, how do you literally kill time for the rest of the game?
