GM Peter Chiarelli did a few interesting things with tonight's Bruins' trade of winger Chuck Kobasew to the Minnesota Wild for current AHL right winger Craig Weller(notes), the rights to Harvard freshman forward Alex Fallstrom and a second-round pick in 2011.

First, he cleared $2.3 million off the books for this season and, more importantly, for 2010-11, with Tuuka Rask (RFA), Blake Wheeler(notes) (RFA) and most notably Marc Savard(notes) (UFA) looking at new deals by next summer.

But as WEEI's Joe Haggerty points out, it's also a multi-faceted move to give an underwhelming B's team (3-4-0) a kick in the rear: Not only is an underperforming (but much-appreciated) winger sent packing, but the financial flexibility Boston gains with this trade will encourage more competition in the lineup. From Haggs:

Clearing Kobasew's $2.3 million off the books allows Chiarelli plenty of cap room to bring up extra bodies from Providence, and also allows B's coach Claude Julien to introduce the bench to players that aren't giving their full effort out on the ice. Kobasew had a single assist in seven games this season, and really hadn't been much of a factor skating with Patrice Bergeron(notes) and Mark Recchi(notes). There wasn't much roster competition when the B's couldn't afford to carry any extra players on their active roster through the first handful of games, and now Julien has that tool in his coaching bag.

Finally, it's savvy move by a GM whose team is, despite its stumble out of the gate, on the short list of legit Stanley Cup contenders. CBC's Elliotte Friedman notes that the Boston Bruins now have two first-rounders next summer (thanks, Burkie) and the Wild's second-round pick in 2011 in their war chest. Chiarelli will be dealing from a stacked deck at the trade deadline, when the cap becomes a bit more manageable.

As for the Wild, they get a quiet dude who works harder than most playing down in the lineup. He hasn't found his game this season, but when he does you know what you get: Around 20 goals and some energetic shifts that can help flip the momentum in a game. He's a sparkplug. He's also a healthy body at forward for Minny, something in short order right now.

Two additions to long-term injured reserve occurred right around this trade, as the Wild sent Pierre-Marc Bouchard (concussion) to LTIR and the Bruins placed Milan Lucic on LTIR with a broken finger he suffered in a game against Dallas last week. Looch has three assists in six games and will now miss a few weeks -- not exactly a sterling audition for Team Canada.

Not to mention Toronto's second rounder in 2010 and first in 2011.

Forgive me Canada, as I am an American fan who "gets it", but some things...namely the Boston Bruins...are more of a priority. I find Lucic's participation in the Olympics (where Milan's skating skills wouldn't likely fare too well due to the larger Olympic rink) about as important as Dice-K's insistence on ruining his 2009 regular season with the Red Sox by playing for Japan in the so-called Baseball Classic. Lucic is a tremendous young talent, but he remains very much a diamond in the rough. Will his (non-fighting) game polish up or won't it? When will his admitted occasional soft mental approach top games become a thing of the past?
The Bruins are in need of a couple of veterans who can mentor the likes of Lucic, Krejci and others via a warrior's mentality, guys who come to play every night, every period, every shift. A "whatever it takes" attitude is what is needed in Boston. I see a blockbuster trade coming within a month.

With no hockey tonight watching a little baseball, a couple of thoughts. How is it in an Olympic compressed season do the Flyers play 1 game in two weeks? This is ridiculous stupidity of amazing proportions. It will take two weeks just to get them back into playing shape. Am I the only person that looks at John Stevens and says this guy is completely overmatched as an NHL head coach? He can't handle his staff and is completely unable to match lines. Not that my team is setting the world on fire, but did anyone really think the Bruins were a lead contender to win the cup? That team has some talent but a lot more holes and really Thomas needs to be perfect in order for them to go anywhere. Just my opinion.

You obviously didn't "get it" enough to know that because the Olympics will be held in North America this year, the hockey will be in NHL-sized rinks, not international-sized. And Andre "Red Light"s last name is Racicot, not Raccicot.

I believe.... and I admit I'm no authority..... that the larger international size rinks are used in the Olympics regardless of where they're held. I know they were in Salt Lake in 2002.

2010 draft: Two 1st round picks (Toronto, Boston), 3 Second round picks (Toronto, Tampa Bay, Boston)
2011 draft: Two 1st round picks (Toronto, Boston), 2 Second round picks (Minnesota, Boston)
There's another significant move from Chiarelli coming here, no doubt about it... Kovalchuk is definitely a pipe dream, but I do expect a high caliber right winger to be joining the mix later in the season; time will tell if that player will be a rental, or a staple.
I also like this move because it opens up a spot for Marchand... we need his energy badly. I have a ton of respect for Recchi, but he's killing us right now... I don't think there's enough gas left in the tank for another full season. I think he needs to have a seat for a few games...

Basically the bruins are gonna be in the running for taylor hall this summer thanks to the leafs, since toronto looks like they will end up finishing last. As an Islanders fan this is gonna be one giant kick to the balls seeing hall go to a team that could end up picking #1 or being able to pick in the top 3 this summer after making a run into the playoffs. Well it will hurt the leafs probably just as bad.

@ Andre #4 : The baseball classic and the Olympics are by no means the same. OV and Malkin have both stated they would risk suspension to play in the Olympics in 2014. The baseball classic played to half-empty stands if I'm not mistaken. Tickets to the ice hockey medal round games at the 2010 Olympics will be $1000 or more easy. Plus, Lucic is from Vancouver (where the Olympics are). In the 1991 Canada Cup, Eric Lindros was a FORCE even though he only scored twice in the tournament. In fact, he was a teenager who had never played in the NHL but he had a tremendous impact due to his physical play. Similarly, Lucic could provide a physical element (on NHL-sized rinks, as noted by Matt). I disagree that Lucic is not a big-game performer. He won the Memorial Cup MVP in leading his hometown Vancouver Giants to victory. He lead the Bruins with a plus 11 in last year's playoffs and scored the goal that sent game 7 to OT against Carolina. He needs refinement to be sure, if anything an opportunity to suit up with Canada's best might be exactly what he needs.
The Bruins and Canucks are both guilty of slow starts (3-4). I think both teams assumed they would be 100+ point teams. Not easy to do in the NHL, you cannot take nights off, hell, you can't take periods off. Also, their area of strength (goaltending) has been weak. Thomas and Luongo have yet to play well.

This is OK for the Bruins. They just called up Brad Marchand from Providence who was leading the AHL in goals scored (6 goas in 6 games), and the Bruins need goal scorers. He also looked good in training camp. Kobasew wasn't doing much for the Bruins this year, so letting him go may not be such a big deal.

Matt R. Regarding the Bruins going after Kovalchuk. I agree with you that being a pipe dream. If Kovalchuk signs with a team other than the Thrashers this summer (and not saying that he will), Washington is a more likely destination.
There are rumors that the CAPS Nylander may be heading to Switzerland soon, thus unloading $4.875M of his cap hit. And Theodore becomes a UFA this summer, thus another $4.5M cap hit could come of Washington's books. Thus Washington could have $9.375M cap space this summer to sign Kovalchuk. The key to such a scenrio is that Kovalchuk is very close friends with both Ovechkin and Semin, and the CAPS are a lot of people in Russia's favourite NHL team.
Of course the CAPS will have to also re-sign both Backstrom and Semin this summer, but a scenerio of Kovalchuk signing with the CAPS is more logical than a scenerio of Kovalchuk signing with the Bruins (if he doesn't re-sign with Atlanta when he becomes a UFA this summer).

Chiarelli signs Kobasew. B's fail in the playoffs. Kobasew lays an egg the following season. Chiarelli deals Kobasew for picks.
    Chiarelli is savvy?
Looks like Chiarelli tied up $2.333 for two summers and is trying to fix his mistake.
    Break even, at best.

Frog. I'm talking about next season. I'm assuming that the CAPS re-sign both Backstrom and Semin this summer when they both become RFA's and they somehow manage to have enough cap space to sign Kovalchuk, who will be a UFA this summer as well. That ofcourse assumes that Nylander and Theodore are no longer on the CAPS NHL roster ($9.375 M cap hits), and that Kovalchuk doesn't re-sign with Atlanta. And I'm also speculating that such a possibility exists, due largely to Ovechkin, Semin, and Kovalchuk being close buddies.
