Boston Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli said today, via Bruins Blog, that his team isn't moving its No. 2 overall selection in the 2010 NHL Draft next week; adding that they're "going to take one of those two forwards."

Meaning that either left wing Taylor Hall or center Tyler Seguin, seen here lifting an invisible refrigerator, will be wearing the Spoked B and trying to decipher Zdeno Chara's(notes) congratulatory cell phone message next Friday.

Not that Chiarelli hasn't been tempted by the fruits of another. From WEEI:

"There was actually one that I was impressed with," Chiarelli said, seemingly entranced by the offer as he spoke. Even so, Chiarelli made clear that every offer involving giving up the choice will end the same way.

"I'm not moving it," Chiarelli said of the second pick, one of two first-round selections received in the Phil Kessel(notes) trade. "We're going to take one of those two forwards.

"I've gotten quite a few [interesting offers] actually. A lot of them are prefaced with the comment, 'Look, I have to do this,' because I've been quite clear that I'm not going to move this [pick]."

Chiarelli also said "I know who we want," and one assumes it's the guy who won't add another talented body to a position that already boasts Marc Savard's(notes) long-term contract, David Krejci(notes) and Patrice Bergeron(notes) ... and who would join a left wing corps that has Milan Lucic(notes), one more (half?) year of Marco Sturm(notes) and the glaring need for someone as explosive as Taylor Hall can be.

So now the question becomes: Will Boston really sit by and accept the Edmonton Oilers' seconds (nothing sloppy about either player, for the record) or will they get aggressive and "nudge" the Oil into taking the guy they don't covet first overall? Are they really cool with "either/or," roster needs be damned?

I don't think anyone would be happy with a "number 2" in their hands.

So uh... does the result of the standing long jump, in a sport where jumping occurs (save the line changes, where everyone jumps) once every ten games, at most, really affect a draft position? Are you going to take one guy over the other because he can cover an extra two inches... standing still... on solid ground... without skates on... at room temperature... three months before the regular season?

Send the pick to Chicago and we'll take another young stud to skate with Kane and Toews.

If I'm Chiarelli, I give Edmonton pick #32 to ensure they take the center who they should take in any case...leaving Hall to fall to Boston.
Edmonton should take Seguin for another reason - Longer term, I doubt Hall (who has Bobby Orr as his agent & wears #4 on his jersey in tribute), will want to stay in Edmonton, given how accustomed he's become to the limelight & media spotlight of the best hockey player on the best team in junior for the last two years. Seguin may not stay either, but he seems to prefer flying under the radar & might be less of a "flight risk".

Rudy you are retarded. First of all if your assumption is even correct, which its probably not. "how accustomed he's become to the limelight & media spotlight of the best hockey player on the best team in junior for the last two years" And he is going to get this media spotlight in Boston where you dont sell out, and its 4th sport in that city, vs Edmonton that breaths hockey, makes so much sense. Oilers will take Hall only if boston doeskin offer them something, or take a player off their hands like Souray. Also the Oilers aren't in a bind like Boston is with their Center position. We can say we have more winger than centers...but not something we cant solve with trades, unlike Boston that has heavy cap hitting centers that they probably wont be able to move.

Stupid. Both players are perfectly capable of playing center or wing.
Hall is better, Edmonton should take him. Boston still gets a future stud, whether they make an opening at center or convert him to the wing.

As an Oilers fan we have to take Hall because frankly he is the more dynamic player and is a pure sniper - something Edmonton sorely lacks. Forgot positions or team needs because that changes from year to year. Take the guy who you think is going to be the better player. Besides, Hall played centre half the year in Windsor anyways and stated himself he only played wing because they had too many centres. Edmonton is stuck with Horcoff for now, Gagner is not going anywhere and guys like Potulny, Brule and Cogs all can play centre and have upside. Add Hall and Jordan Eberle to the mix and the centres on the team will look better. Then you can move guys like Hemsky, Nilsson and Souray and try to get a centre back ala Stephen Weiss who would be a perfect fit.
Get it done Tambellini and dont screw it up!

Enough with the "the Bruins don't want Seguin because he's a center" baloney. Rachelp is right - both of these guys can play all three forward positions. Hall's Junior coach even said Hall was a "natural center" they moved to the wing.
Seguin can put the puck in the net. Whether he does it from in front of the net, behind the net, the boards, the blue line, or the popcorn stand is irrelevant. He's a scoring forward. That's what the Bruins need. Period.

Bruins are not going to trade the pick, for Byflugien (in what universe is he worth a top pick?), Spezza, or anybody else. It's beyond retarded to think a team up snug to the salary cap is going to trade a potential stud who is going to make about 3 million combined over the next three years for a player who is going to make 3-7 million per year.
And Seguin will be just fine if that's the way it falls. Most rookie forwards come into the league on the wing anyway since they don't play defense so well.

Toronto was stupid to give up their first round pick.
If you look at many of the teams that have won a Cup it the past 20 years they built the core of their teams with draft picks. Toronto is doomed to sit in the basement of the NHL for the next 10 years. They need a GM that will build with draft picks and occasional smart trades. (NOT giving up the No.2 Draft pick for ONE player)
Wow... This move makes John Ferguson look smart-

Ok first off I have to give some props to JonB that was funny haha. As for Lee you dont have a clue what your talking about. Tim Thomas is still a solid Goalie in the NHL. To begin the season he never got any goal support and thats why his win lose record looked like crap. As for his other numbers they were still in the top half of the league. He lost out to an even better goalie in Tuukka Rask. Thomas deserves to go to a team that needs him and I hope PC will give him that and trade him before the season is over. As for the draft picks Im not too worried as to who we get. Its not very often you get a number 2 overall. We wouldnt be having this discussion if Boston had the first pick. Either one of them like several people have said will fit in at any forward position so I think we are sitting pretty and cant wait for next season.

@JonB - jumping proves the the explosiveness in a players leg. whether one jumps 2 inches higher than the other is irrelevant. there's a minimum height scouts set to see how NHL ready a player is. jumping is obviously not the hear all-say all, but it's one of the measurements scouts use to judge athleticism and players' explosiveness. it probably doesn't merit a difference between #1 and #2 overall, but it can sway a scout/GM with the 40th pick.

In interviews Seguin has appeared to be a cool calm collected individual. I would be happy to see Seguin on the Bruins. I would also be happy with Hall. Hall seems to be a more natural fit, and the Spitfires won out the OHL.
I think the Bruins could get something very worthy in trade for Tuuka Rask around draft time. I'd be for moving Thomas but his contract is too much of a burden, so I assume that would fail. Trading Rask should help get Thomas back on track, he can have an amazing season still.
As far as the Bruins choking goes, they can't get injured, and they need players who won't fold to the physical style Coach Julien demands.

You can't move Rask.. he is untouchable... He is your future in goal.. Thomas has maybe a couple seasons left in him. He just stole the starting job from the reigning Vezina winner as a rookie.
Either Seguin or Hall is a huge upgrade to the B's and I can't wait to watch it. Seguin seems like a true professional off the ice in the all the interviews I've seen - level headed. Assuming we end up with him, he will start out on wing just as Bergeron did 6 years ago and eventually make the move back to Center.
