Puck Daddy - NHL

TSN reported this afternoon that free agent winger Brendan Shanahan and the New Jersey Devils were close to a deal; Devils beat writer Tom Gulitti confirmed on Fire & Ice that Shanny has signed what's believed to be a one-year contract, bringing the 39-year-old forward back to the team where his NHL career started. And this is what happens when you get embarrassed by the Atlanta Thrashers on home ice ...

Shanahan had 23 goals and 46 points last year with the New York Rangers, and was also linked with the Philadelphia Flyers and St. Louis Blues earlier this season as a potential home. The numbers on this deal should be interesting, as the Devils didn't have all that much cap space to begin with.

Two areas where this immediately helps the team. First is the power play, where the Devils are 20th in the NHL and where Shanahan has averaged over 22 points per season in the last three years.

The second is having a three-time Stanley Cup champion in the locker room, whose first NHL season came when Zach Parise was three years old. In other words, someone who isn't going be very cool with losing 4-0 to the Thrashers at The Rock.

Brian Rolston, Bobby Holik, Brendan Shanahan ... again, Lou Lamoriello keeps it in the family. But this move is also an indication of Lamoriello's concerns about the current team's inconsistencies, and the clear importance he's placed on building a Cup contender with a backbone of reliable old hands. Now all the Devils have to prove is that they're not the 2008 Avalanche, a team of over-cooked leftovers from a bygone era.

Finally, let's not forget the importance of having Brendan Shanahan on hand in case the Devils and Rangers meet again in the playoffs. Talk about motivation ...

Gotta love the OG Devils uni's in that Shanahan card.
The Devils would do well to get him in now and start building some chemistry.
It'll be interesting to see if he can still be an impact player.
Shame - as a Kings fan I had hoped they'd try to lure him to LA to mentor our young guys, but its no big loss.
    We've got time, I guess...

Good luck Shanny. You've earned the respect of Rangers fans, albeit only in a 2 year stint, but accomplishing more then some have done in their Rangers careers. Glad to see you signed with a respectable team. Now I'm siting on my couch crushing your head ! I'm crushing your head ! (pinch pinch)

As a Devil fan, I like the leadership aspect and addition to the PP. Rolston will be looking to pass one-timers to him frequently.
Now let's go get another D-man at the deadline and have Brodeur in prime shape on his return.

I believe I called this signing months ago. He wanted to stay in the area, on a decent team, not a rebuilding one...and Flyers don't have cap space (or the need). Without the Rangers, that means the Devils...

If it helps, Atlanta got embarrased by Kitties. 8-4 is pretty bad even for Thrashers.
    Good game for Ville, though.

Wow big play for the Devils. Shanny will always play hard. And in the NJ system he could do really well at this point in his career. Good for Shanny. He is one of those class guys you hate to see go.
    This move doesnt stink!

Does the fact the Thrashers gave up 8 goals, 5 in the 3rd, against FL this afternoon make the Devil's loss more or less embarrassing? My guess would be more.

Fire Glen Sather! Shanny should be playing for the Rangers. Even if he joined the team within the next 2 weeks, he would probably lead them in goals by the end of the season. Other than Messier, who is a better leader than Shanny. Ranger power play stinks, you don't think Shanny could've changed that? How many goals would the line of Gomez, Naslund, Shanahan have? He will personally knock us out of the playoffs this year.

Good for Shanahan for making a decision before February. He should help them out greatly, until Brodeur comes ba...wait, its not a goalie? And they're still winning? (I know, its been done) Good pickup anyway. And also, judging at how the avalanche are playing without leftovers, it seems to be that they can actually cook. So why are all these guys trying to play again?

Well, this means he won't be coming back to us. God speed Shanny! But the Devils? Aw man, guess his career will come full circle then, eh? Does this also mean we will see the return of the Red and Green in NJ?

I think it's great the New Jersey devils are able to acquire some much needed offense to their lineup. Shanahan brings toughness, goal scoring ability, experience and respect.. Although his prime year's are well behind him, Shanahan is going to give Devils some additional toughness and grit that will help create more scoring opportunities for the team..

Never saw this comin. Totally out of character for Lou. I also never saw Holik coming back either.
Lou must really believe in Sutter, more than his past coaches(except for Robinson).
    Let's GO Devils!!!

Another outstanding move made by the Devils. They are an organization that always seems to do the right thing, and this is yet another example.
See, Glen Sather, it CAN be done. The problem is, YOU cannot do it.
