Former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher is a ubiquitous local celebrity in Raleigh, as his latern jaw has popped up everywhere from local supermarkets to the putting greens.

Tonight, like Ric Flair and Elizabeth Dole before him, Cowher's scheduled to sound the ceremonial "warning siren" before Game 3 between the Boston Bruins and the hometown Carolina Hurricanes. It'll be the second time Cowher's had the honor.

The former Steel City icon did an interview with 850 The Buzz in Raleigh today in which he discussed his hockey credentials as a fan in Pittsburgh:

Q. You were in Pittsburgh for a long time. Did you get into the Pens when your tenures coincided?

"I did. As a matter of fact, I grew up in Pittsburgh as well, so I got into the Pens very early ... actually when it was the Pittsburgh Hornets, before they were the Pens. I had followed hockey from an early age, and certainly I was able to go back there in '92 as the head coach [and] they had a team that was pretty good: They had Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr(notes) and some guy named Ron Francis. It was a very good team, and I was fortunate to see some of the Cups come through there. It was exciting, it really was. And now I'm watching these two playoff series thinking these two hopefully will be on a collision course."

The Penguins have some catching up to do, but it's not out of the question that they and the Hurricanes could meet for the right to play for the Stanley Cup. And if they did ... well, where are Cowher's loyalties?

Consider that he's met with the Hurricanes coaches, follows the team on television and told the station today that he respects the way warring factions of college basketball fans can come together under the same arena roof to cheer on a hockey team. "When you walk into that arena, there's a sense of pride. We had a little bit of that in Pittsburgh," he said, also adding:

Q. You can't be too happy right now with what's going on between the Caps and the Pens and Ovechkin getting the better of Sidney Crosby(notes) right now; even though they put on a game for the ages the other night, going two hat tricks.

"What a great game. I mean, it really was. But you know what? I gotta be honest with you: I am just totally involved right now in watching the Hurricanes. I thought the game they played, after the first five or 10 minutes, that that was the best sustained effort that they have had so far in this playoff series. Paul Maurice and Ronnie ... that was a big win. They needed some confidence. They hadn't beaten Boston all year. Now, to be able to come back home 1-1, hopefully our fans get behind them and they can win this game tonight."

Sure sounds like a convert, although we'd love for someone to get him on the record should the teams meet in the conference finals. If Cowher's a Caniac, there's really only two options for revenge for Pittsburgh.

1. Mock Jake Delhomme.

2. Wine and dine Dean Smith until he's wearing a Max Talbot(notes) jersey.

digg delicious

why would anyone like the nhl? it's still being run by borderline retarded people who still, somehow, allow refs to decide who will win championships. what a joke. would something as retarded as what happened to the wings last night happen in football? no. period. the main problem is that the league is being run by old, troglodyte canadians who resist change in any way because they know if they allow more offense then their players won't be as relevant anymore. that's why i hope OV makes it to the finals, the ducks play the trap....and then everyone will realize how boring the game is because they let defense and goalies with enormous pads run the league.

@2 You mean like the way the Ed Hochuli botched the fumble/incomplete pass call in the Broncos/Chargers game this year, but the play couldn't be overturned by replay because of a whistle? Yeah that would never happen in the NFL.

the only joke that I can see is that yet another wings fan has to come on this post and whine and cry some more about their loss last night… not enough that they have already had their own post to cry on, they use this forum to continue their high pitched balling. Wings fans are collectively the most pathetic cry babies in all of sports they always have been and it seems they will to continue to always be known as such.

this blog entry is boring so i had to start a different conversation. hey, call it crying but it's still true. this league is not taken seriously for a reason. IT"S BORING. canadians don't like change...therefore we have a BORING league. and it's not like it didn't change in the first place to get this way. they're so resistant to change they won't even change it BACK to the way it was 15 years ago when it was still fun to watch. Lemieux is the best player...so lemieux scores a lot and wins the title. will that happen now? now a days, the team who STIFLES the best player wins the title.

ok, i get the football examples but it was just an example - it happens far less often in football and the refing is more consistent. the superbowl this year was a fantastic example. the cardinals took, like, 15 penalties....and the refs called EVERY one of them. they didn't try to keep it "even" and because they can challenge calls and let the refs confer before they make a stupid call the game turns out much better. ultimately, the point is when are retarded hockey fans going to realize they're being owned by a bunch of nerd canadians. why do you think everyone up there hates OV so much? because he's not canadian. we're letting these guys decide to make defense and goalies run the league. what a waste of talent.

Hossa, stop crying, calls were bad both ways in that game and the Wings had plenty of other opportunities to score. Or is it the refs fault as well that they can't beat Hiller?

john, the wings are getting outplayed because they're being outcoached. know why? because, for some reason, the league has decided to do nothing about curing "Lemaire's Disease." It was introduced in the mid '90s to win cups and to bore us all out of our minds.
does anyone honestly think the league would be this boring if it were being run by americans or russians? nope. it'd be ovechkin v datsyuk v kovalchuck v crosby and malkin in the final four. instead we'll have another 2-1 snooze fest that no one cares about. gee, i wonder why we can't get any fans?? it's getting damn near soccer these days.
