Puck Daddy - NHL

As the Dallas Stars visit the Calgary Flames tonight, the Canadian media had been hoping and praying for some sort of nasty fallout from Sean Avery's comments to ESPN about Jarome Iginla being a player "no one cares about."

Well, Iginla didn't exactly play along in creating a feud. But leave it to Avery to chum the water for the media in a rather hilarious way this afternoon with this statement:

"Uh, I'm really happy to be back in Calgary. I love Canada.

"And I just want to comment on how it's become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don't know what that's about.

"Enjoy the game tonight."

The Calgary Herald offers its interpretation:

The jab, of course, is directed at Calgary Flames defenceman Dion Phaneuf, who is dating Avery's ex-girlfriend, Elisha Cuthbert. The actress, reportedly, also dated Mike Komisarek of the Montreal Canadiens.

The 25-second clip - in its entirety; he refused to answer questions - got a rise out of some of his younger teammates. "He said what?" shrieked one. Many of them cackled, in fact.

Well, this should be an interesting one tonight, seeing as how the honor of Phuthbert is now at stake. That Sean Avery ... whatever will he say next?

Update: Puck Daddy has learned via email from the NHL that Avery is suspended indefinitely:

NEW YORK (December 2, 2008) -- Dallas Stars forward Sean Avery has been suspended indefinitely, pending a hearing with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, in accordance with the provisions of NHL By-Law 17 and Article 6 of the NHL Constitution for conduct "detrimental to the League or game of hockey," the National Hockey League announced today.  The suspension was imposed following inappropriate public comments, not pertaining to the game, made by Avery earlier today.

"Inappropriate public comments?" What could that possibly be in reference to?

Sean Avery, a player whose skill cannot hide how big a douche bag he really is.
If there's anyone in the league looking for a Phaneufing, it's Avery. And yes, I expect his sloppy seconds at some point will include a dude name Rapheal who designs purses for a living.

well considering Dallas is now home to the Rangers sloppy seconds (#16) then i guess sean should be the leading expert in that department.

Dion Phaneuf has one of his big open-ice hits all lined up, and it's got Avery's name all over it. After that, Jarome Iginla will score a hat trick, with all three shots coming from center ice. And even after that, Sean Avery will still be a punk.
People like Jarkko Ruutu more than Sean Avery. That's hard to fathom.

I wouldn't be talkin' bout Jack Bauer's daughter like that...but then again, I have an aversion to being brutally murdered by America's hero.

Ex girlfriends are always good for bitterness. If we can't have Lowe and Burke. Avery vs the world will have to due.
Damn this isn't the versus game. Stupid boring Philly/Tampa.

@ wings fan - Good call. Maybe he'll bank in a shot or two off Avery's skate while he's at it.

$10 that Phaneuf makes Avery "sloppy seconds" to boards tonight. Or kills him....either or.

Sure enough, as I email this in, it's posted. Damnit.
Gotta get the laptop to watch this one streaming. I'm sure Versus will treat me to the thrilling Yotes - Kings tilt instead.

Hopefully the next thing he says will be "who am I" after Phaneuf introduces him to the unconscious world previously visited by Lindros after Scott Stevens.

love him or hate him, Avery is always entertaining. Personally, I love guys like him, not afraid to say what he thinks, and always ready to back it up while on the ice. The Rangers really do miss his presence.

I hope Phaneuf puts him through the ice - Denis Hamel raised to the nth power.
Avery is gutless and talentless. He couldnt hold a candle to any of the best agitators in the game, but he's desperate to hold their purses. Bobby Clarke of today would mop up an alley with him - his face would definitely no longer be 'in Vogue' after an altercation with anyone bigger than a 7 year old girl.

That's actually kind of funny...nonetheless, I surely hope to see Avery wander into Phaneuf's line of sight, preferably at full speed with his head down.

@Ch M - Good Call! How big of a feeding pipe will Avery need after Phaneuf lays him out cold? I'm sure it's not as big as the feeding pipe Wyshynski has sticking out of his mouth - that thing has an OD of 0.500"!
What kind of liquids do those nurses need to pump into you everyday Wysh?

I'll pay money to watch Phaneuf lay out Avery on their first shift. OK, not totally true. I'll pay the NHL $20 a month to watch it on Gamecenter.
