Say you've got this hockey player. Does his job well. Teammates like him, despite the fact he's a total egomaniac. Gets in trouble a lot. Seems about as enthused with creating his own celebrity stylist company as he is playing for the Stanley Cup.
Now, let's say this 28-year-old agitator is asking for $4 million a year after making $1.9 million last season. Might you seek a cheaper alternative?
No one is saying Andreas Jamtin is the next Sean Avery. The 25-year-old winger from HV71 Jonkoping in the Swedish Elite League, seen here shadowing Mats Sundin in a game back in 2004, is at best "Avery-like." But the former Detroit Red Wings draft pick in 2001 -- an underwhelming one at that -- opted out of his contract in Sweden, and according to Newsday and Blueshirt Bulletin he's headed for Broadway (OK, probably Hartford, but maybe Broadway) pending confirmation from the New York Rangers.
From reviews to video evidence, it's clear that Jamtin is a Swedish pest.
Dubi Silverstein of the Bulletin has a rather definitive look at Jamtin, who has also been compared to Tomas Holmstrom:
He is an agitator who specializes in trash talk, but who can skate and score as well. "He's a little gnat in everyone's face," Detroit assistant GM Jim Nill said of him in 2006 at NHL.com. "He gets under your skin. I saw him play against Zdeno Chara and he was driving Chara nuts. He was in his face all the time. That will be his game. Who could I compare him to? As a pest, he doesn't have Ken Linseman's offensive skills. He's more like Ville Niemenen. He's a hard-working player with a fire-hydrant type of body."
And he can really piss you off. Jamtin wears No. 50 in the following clip:
Steve Zipay of Newsday wonders if this signing is "a shot across the bow" of Avery to bring the two sides closer on a contract. If so, it's a shrewd bit of managing by Glen Sather to get his pest's attention while Avery's more concerned with appearing at the Belmont Stakes and dressing Scarlett Johansson.
In other Rangers news, John Dellapina of the Daily News spoke with Jaromir Jagr, who revealed he hasn't heard anything from Sather since the end of the season and who continues his publicity stunt public flirtation with Omsk-Avangard. Dellapina wonders how Jagr feels about seeing the Rangers open their piggy bank for Scott Gomez and Chris Drury last July but thus ignoring a guy who outplayed them both in the postseason. It's a fair point.

Avery wants 4 million? To do what? Dance in front of Brodeur again? He's not even worth the 1.9 they were paying him in the first place. He should just apply for full time at Vogue instead of just being an intern, if he thinks someone will pay him 4 million in the cap age.

The Wings don't need either Jagr or Shanahan (or Sundin, for that matter). They're going to focus on signing Z long-term and looking around for a more experienced goalie if Howard doesn't pan out.

@14, I like your thinking, you know Jagr is hoping Pittsburgh retires his jersey, which aint gonna happen unless he makes ammends, (it's why Rob Flake came back to the Kings) JJ's problem is he's too concerned about the $$$$$.
