Puck Daddy - NHL

A couple of interesting factoids about Martin St. Louis of the Tampa Bay Lightning. First, he has a no-trade clause, according to NHLSCAP. Those are pesky. He also has a $5.25 million cap hit through the end of 2011, which can be a bit of a burden for a team like, say, the Pittsburgh Penguins -- who have roughly $46 million in committed salary for next season, via NHL Numbers.

Not to say a St. Louis-to-Pittsburgh* trade, like the one whose whispers are being reported by our buddy David Pagnotta on The Fourth Period, is impossible from a numbers perspective. Thinking about next season: Miroslav Satan's UFA departure plus Ruslan Fedotenko's UFA departure equals St. Louis's cap hit with $450,000 to spare.

Then there's the notion that the Penguins could send salary back to the Bolts in the form of defenseman Ryan Whitney. A 26-year-old defenseman for what will be a 34-year-old winger with declining numbers? Unless the cap-onomics make Whitney's participation vital, it might be overpayment.

For what it's worth, St. Louis sounds a hell of a lot less rah-rah about Tampa's chances to stage a miracle rally for a playoff spot. Which may have something to do with having to go something like 21-7 to even have a sniff of the postseason race the rest of the way. Yikes.

FYI: Some of you might know that I do a little podcast with Pagnotta and TFP on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Well, we're going to try a little experiment today. First, here's the player to (god-willing) listen to it. Second, here's the phone number to actually call in and bug us: 646-929-1165. The podcast begins at 12:30 p.m. EST and lasts a half-hour (for now). I have no idea if this will work. But much like Oren Koules and Len Barrie, I'm not about to let failure get into the way of future failure.

You'd think the Pens would learn from last season.

i do like st. louis even though his numbers are declining he's on a team with the most part mediocre talent. Also, if you look at sykora his numbers were declining now he's playing pretty damn well. As for whitney honestly, he is very overrated and with with depth of D that the pens have and with Gonch coming back plus with the injuries the trade doesn's sound too bad. GOOO PENS

Although he is signed til 11/12, I don't think St. Louis is the guy. He's getting older and slower, not getting any bigger, and I think you could get more of a return for a guy like Whitney during the draft. Unless Tampa is willing to sell low and take a package that included a player like Satan (for salary/roster reasons)or a prospect, and some picks or something along those lines, it doesn't seem needed right now.

Yeah, I foresee St-Louis waiving his NTC to go to a team in a free fall in the standings. That makes sense.

I'm not sure anyone really wants Whitney at 4 million. His worth is directly correlated with Crosby's back door feed (hmm gay joke?). The Dude's not worth taking on that salary.

50 bucks says St Louis gets traded to Pittsburgh and they can't re-sign him during free agency cause Ken Holland signs him to a 1-year deal with the Wings. 2 million bucks says if this happens, the Pens will gripe and complain as if St. Louis was a lifelong Penguin.

Who's in a free fall? The Pens have won 3 of their last 4, including a win against the best team in the West. The've been steady at 9/10 for a while, and are pushing hard to move up to 7-8. Get your facts straight douche.

@Matt R - well, yeah, but if somebody signed Pierre McGuire as their new coach, that'd mean he can't be an "analyst" anymore. Yes, that poor team will go in the crapper, but we, the TV audience, will definitely win.
