A glance at the NHL All-Star Game voting totals this morning reveals some tightening of the races. Marian Hossa (166,915), Pavel Datsyuk (163,044) and Henrik Zetterberg (159,054) all lead the Western Conference forwards voting for the Detroit Red Wings, but Jarome Iginla (148,728) is right there and Patrick Kane (100,152) is also over one hundred-thousand votes.

But it's over in the East where things are finally getting interesting.

It appears that Andrei Markov and Mike Komisarek -- barring a miraculous rally from Zdeno Chara, Sergei Gonchar (!) or Mike Green -- will be the starting defenseman in the all-star game. Ditto Carey Price in goal, who nearly leads Marc-Andre Fleury by 200,000 votes. (The much-heralded Vote for Thomas write-in campaign has produced just under 41,000 for the Boston Bruins netminder.) The only starting position the Montreal Canadiens might be in danger of losing is at forward.

Sidney Crosby (224,318) has closed the gap with Alex Tanguay (304,228) to less than 80,000 votes. Alexei Kovalev (310,516) and Saku Koivu (307,527) still lead all forwards in votes.

Can Crosby catch them?

The Canadiens' pace has slowed since the end of robo-voting, and Crosby's been steadily gaining; and judging from the vote totals for Evgeni Malkin (182,823) and a player like Ryan Whitney (108,009), much of that support is coming from Penguins fans.

The Western Conference voters could be a difference-maker in this race; the question then becomes whether motivated fan bases in Chicago and San Jose potentially voting for Crosby can balance the assumed lack of support Crosby would receive from the Detroit ballot box-stuffers. (This may be unfairly judging Red Wings' fans opinions of Crosby. We're sure not all of them practice voodoo in his name.)

One other bit of all-star game news this morning, involving some fine print we just came across in the NHL's rules for the voting. For the Fox Mulders in the crowd, it seems that the NHL will be hiding totals for the last two days of voting:

All votes (via mobile and internet methods) will be combined and continually updated throughout the Promotion Period, so be sure to visit the website to see how your vote affected the results. There will be a voting results blackout during the final 48 hours of the voting period. The final results will be posted on January 6th, so be sure to check back for the big reveal and see if your favorites will be playing in the NHL All-Star Game.

Let's put aside, for a moment, how hypocritical it is for the NHL to crow about transparency while placing a "blackout" during the most critical time for results totals. Why on earth would you motivate your fans with "real time" voting and then not allow them a fun, chaotic mad rush to the finish in order to put their favorite players over the top? What a killjoy.

Back to the hypocrisy: We already had to suffer through the NHL's failure to prevent voter fraud when balloting started. Pulling the curtain back over the vote totals before the end of the balloting will just fuel speculation that the fix is in.

Come on Wysh, they hide the vote totals the last two days so Bettman can put in his group of "Gary's kids". You WANT to watch them, you WILL watch them! One way or another his golden children are getting in.

Still majorly unfair about Hab's forwards. Kovalev and Koivu don't even deserve to be on the EAS roster, let alone starting. You could make a case for Tanguay being on the 3rd line, but definitely no higher if even on the roster. NHL should throw out half of their votes. Habs fans are jerks to have voted like that. Oh well, guess the East won't be scoring much, especially if those starters are matched up against Lidstrom and Phaneuf (although Boyle should take Phaneuf's place in that this year). Kovalev/Koivu/Tanguay might muster up what, like 2 shots, neither of them on goal for the whole game?

The Whole voting for a team with a single text concept isn't really helping the situation, Whitney and Gonchar should not be on the ballot, and I'm sure a majority if not all of the votes they are getting are from people doing the team vote, and Fleury has played alright, but not a chance he's second best in the east right now....Should be Thomas or Lundqvist, and even Crosby for that matter, Malkin should be getting more than him....

The All-Star selection process should have some integrity if being selected is going to have any meaning whatsoever. But I don't know why anyone is really all that concerned, the "game" itself doesn't even resemble an actual competition. It's an exhibition for forwards only. I don't know why D men even show up.

I don't care about the all star game and won't vote. Those that do vote please organize and vote in an enforcer from each side.

Wys- why are you surprised that the NHL would do something against their stated intentions? I think the ONLY interest in the all-star game this year is the voting (like the last few years) so why would the NHL do this? Some things we will never know (like why the Sabs haven't sent Max to Siberia yet).

Crosby will not catch anyone because he will fall down/dive and then scream at the ref asking why a penalty wasn't called. And then he will do it again. And again. And again.

    Players and coaches should vote.
    Fans should cheer.
    Sports writers should shut up.
Montreal should be nuked minus the strip clubs, those ROCK.

Oh, way to go on the fine print catch, there.
So we'll probably end up with another voting irregularity, just like last year? The best part of the all-star game last year was the youngstars game.

Team voting is stupid. Any regulars on the blog know I'm a HUGE Wings fan, but I typically vote for Hossa and Lidstrom as the only Wings I vote for. Sometimes I vote for Zetterberg also. Rafalski and Datsyuk deserve to be on the roster, but not as starters based on their performance this season. And even as a Wings fan, I have to say, Osgood is a very overrated goalie. He wins cause he plays behind Lidstrom and Rafalksi, but his GAA and SV% are awful this year, and he is no where near Luongo. SV% is the best category to look at IMO, and Ozzie has had better years than this one. Anyways, I never vote for all Wings in my ballot. It's stupid when fans do that.

this is a joke. mike komisarek isn't even the best defenseman in his pairing. alexi kovalev hasn't scored in nine games. you have to take this out the fan's hands because clearly they aren't capable of appointing appropriate all-stars. how can tim thomas not be starting?? he's leading the nhl in almost every statistical category relevant to goaltending.

I've voted for Crosby, Malkin, and Semin when I've voted since they've actually earned it. My opinions about Sidney "Whine to the Officials After Every Play" Crosby and Evgeni "Too Sick to Play Well, But Not Sick Enough to Sit" Malkin don't keep me from making an informed vote, unlike the ballot-box-stuffing Québécois.

Also WTF is MAF doing in 2nd. He's the 2nd most overrated goalie in the league. Top 2 goalies in the East should be Lundqvist and Thomas. 3rd Carey Price. Home watching the game on TV: Ryan Miller and MAF.

What's the point in even voting when you have the Habs auto stuffing the box, the NHL putting people on the ballot that don't even deserve to be on the ballot, and blacking out the last two days in time for the NHL to correct some of their perceived errors. They should just remove the All Star game from the schedule and worry only about the Olympics every four years.
Turoc on the ballot, hahahahahahahahahahahahaha. More like the biggest waste of a fourth round draft pick (fantasy hockey).

The root of the problem is that fans are allowed to vote.
They vote for their favorites, rather than the player that deserves to be there - the selection should be left to coaches or sportswriters - rather than fans that don't know what they are doing.
Baseball does it the same way - and that is why Mike Schmidt was voted to start the all star game the year after he retired.

Just another drop in the "painfully embarassing oversights" bucket for the Bettman Hockey League. And then of course, a suspicious cover-up plan that reeks of funky Crosby butt-lovin'. I don't know what's more apalling: that Gary Bettman is still employed or the genocide in Darfur.

When they knew of the voting scam, they should have stripped all votes and started over. I don't even know who Mike Komisarek is.

I think voter picks should only be half of the final decision. Fan voting only just makes the Allstar game a fashin-popularity show more suited for the likes of some 16 yr old prom queen soon to be teenage mother in small town Texas than a classy sport. I predict that because of this faulty system many good players will not have the allstar game on their resume even though they are more than good enough to play there.
