The official announcement from 2K Sports is due on Friday, but here it is: Alexander Ovechkin(notes) of the Washington Capitals, your NHL 2K10 cover boy. Will virtual Don Cherry criticize his video game box celebration?

Check out a larger image for the Xbox cover here, as well as the covers for the PS2, PS3, Wii and PC. (Ed. Note: 2K checked in and requested we take down the PC image for now, pending final approval.) Ovechkin is also taking part in a special event down in Las Vegas next week. The details from 2K Sports:
In celebration of the announcement, Ovechkin will be participating in a first-time ever public outdoor hockey motion capture session Tuesday night at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas from 8:30-11:30pm PT. Joining Ovechkin on the ice will be Vancouver Canucks center and 2009 Selke Trophy finalist, Ryan Kesler(notes), along with play-by-play commentator for the San Jose Sharks, Randy Hahn, who will act as host MC. The event is free and open to the public to watch, as synthetic ice will be laid down to create a special hockey rink and 2K Sports' game producers will put Ovechkin through a number of dynamic drills to capture his signature style data for NHL 2K10.
Say what you will about the 2K vs. EA Sports hockey battles -- and if our previous coverage is any indication, you've got plenty to say -- but landing AO is a coup for this series. Ovechkin's on one cover, Patrick Kane's(notes) on the other; which one are you picking up to read the back of the box if you're a casual fan?
Now, if only they'd mo-cap the fire-stick celebration ...
Thanks to 2K Sports for the cover art. Pretty cool, in comparison to his last cover. (And this one as well.)

I spent a lot of years working in the Video gaming industry, and I can almost guarentee you, if the Pens win game 7, there will be a "Sidney Crosby: NHL Stanley Cup" game forthcoming by mid-summer. Maybe not for the 360, at least not right away, but it is a given the Face player in any sport with championship status under thier belt, warrents and receives a game in thier honor. You'll note this is NHL2k10, and Ovechkin is nothing more than a poster boy on it.

Every time a player appears on both covers, he gets some horrible career turn...

@#9 You don't know jack about Crosby because if you did, you'd know what a dumbazz statement that is.

"I think that would qualify as a Photoshop of Horrors.
His face looks like plastic. "
That's because it's (quite obviously) not an actual photo, but the rendering of him from the game. All those long hours in front of the monitor blogging must have damaged your eyesight. :-)
