The last Swede to win Olympic gold in men's platform diving was Erik Adlerz back in 1912. Based on his performance in the world junior championship loss last night against Canada, Swedish goalie Jacob Markstrom may be his nation's next great diving hope.

Check out Jefflred's hilarious "The Mighty Ducks"/Benny Hill-inspired remix of Markstrom's dives from last night's game:

A more straight-forward, chronological video of his dives is here.

The first embellishment was just repulsive, especially the camera angle from inside the net that showed Markstrom -- a Florida Panthers draftee -- flopping backwards like he had just heard the gun to start a backstroke race. The second one, after a collision with Atlanta Thrashers prospect Angelo Esposito, resulted in an unfortunate confrontation as Markstrom feigned injury. The third time he hit the ice was perhaps the most hilarious one, as Washington Capitals draftee Stefan Della Rovere collided with him on a delayed call; he and Markstrom ended up getting coincidental minors.

Meanwhile, there's another video controversy for Sweden on the morning after: Did Detroit Red Wings draftee Joakim Andersson bite Los Angeles Kings prospect Thomas Hickey during a scrum in front of the crease? The alleged video evidence:

Another slow-motion angle can be seen here. Said one poster on the HF Boards: "I think it's pretty damning considering that when Hickey yanks his hand away the glove stays in Andersson's mouth."

A scan of the wires this morning didn't turn up any comments from Hickey or Team Canada about an alleged chomping from what must be Sweden's answer to Derian Hatcher. It's pretty inconclusive otherwise.

I was rooting for Sweden until the dive Markstrom did when playing the puck. Then I was hoping that team of pansies would get reamed.

Great work - but the constant sound of Pierre Maguire in that clip had me reaching for the volume control.

Thanks Wysh, someone REALLY had to write about his and I'm glad it was you. Presumably this kid wants to play in the NHL and I wonder if he thought about the reprecussions of his actions in this game. I sincerely hope that he can never play in a Canadian city again without being boo'ed Vince Carter style.

I thought the goalies name was Brodeurstrom. lol Wysh.
Really though I watched the "strait foward" video and the first three div..errr..embelishments were deserving of a Koules flick but the last one before the video cut off where there was a Canada iceing and Markstrom went to the corner to get it, he deffinatly was taken down that time, maybe ment as a message.

Wow, I haven't seen a dive like that since Mike Ribeiro in the '03-'04 playoffs.

Markstrom is a joke that isn't funny; he was a complete disgrace to the entire sport.
Gee, I wonder if Grapes will cover it during "Coach's Corner".

Markstrom goes down easier than a high school prom date.
    ALTERNATIVELY:
Markstrom goes down easier than an Atlantic City hooker.
    OR
Markstrom goes down easier than your mom.

For more hilarity, go to the youtube link for the chronological sequence of Markstrom's dives and read the comments by the Swedish hockey fans. Apparently Markstrom is a hero who the Canadians ruthlessly attacked. For shame Canada! For shame!

Looks like Hickey stuck his hand in Anderssons' mouth. I'd bite it too Wysh.
Had Hickey stuck a quarter in Anderssons' ear before the scrum, his teeth may have folded back.

that was absolutely hilarious. Markstrom should be laughed out of the game after those performances. I've always thought that to make it a bit more exciting, soccer should bring in some aspects of hockey (smaller field .. smaller goal so the goalie has a shot .. body checks(ok .. maybe leave that one out)), but PLEASE dont bring aspects of soccer into hockey... where one guy gets tapped by another and he's down writhing in pain for 15 minutes!!! what a discrace to the great sport of Hockey.. pathetic ... the biting incident .. hard to see .. but equally funny

Didn't look like Andersson bit him to me. Looked like after Hickey reached in and grabbed the collar of Andersson's shoulder pads, Andersson put his chin down and pinched Hickey's hand with the edge of his visor.

I saw a visor pinch too, no bite. As for Markstrom, let's not forget he's just a kid. Some kids are more mature than others and he has a lot of growing up to do. He's a great goalie with poor judgment right now. Unfortunately though, it was yet another horrible display of unsportsmanlike European tactics but he was really just following the examples of his predecessors. I hope he grows up and plays like a man but don't expect any different if he makes the NHL.
