Puck Daddy - NHL

Just arrived back in D.C., where it's cold, snowy and yet strangely feeling like Cancun in comparison to Montreal during all-star weekend. Thanks to everyone who stopped by and devoured the coverage over the weekend. Hopefully we were able to provide some interesting context with our particular brand of whimsy.

After filing last night's NHL All-Star Game recap, I took the advice of another writer and tracked down a particular brand of whiskey: maple whiskey, to be exact, with a tasty stout whose make and model escapes me on the morning after. Yum.

The real highlight, however, was engaging in the sort of rapturous hockey debates that must rage in McLean's Pub on Peel Street nearly every night: Bobby Orr over Gretzky all-time? Mario, healthy or not, over Gretzky all-time? Is Crosby overrated? Is Lindros a Hall of Famer? Hell, at one point I'm pretty sure we were arguing about Ron Francis vs. Pat LaFontaine. Good times.

Back to this dear blog: The coverage early this week will feature some killer all-star leftovers, including an awkward first-time appearance by a Norris candidate; some great stuff from Tim Thomas of the Boston Bruins; and, our technological limitations notwithstanding, some video interviews.

In the meantime ... is a team-produced, limited edition jersey celebrating the centennial for the Montreal Canadiens -- complete with No. 100 on the back -- a Jersey Foul? Ah, sweet masturbatory nostalgia; nobody, not even the Yankees, does it better than the Habs.

Yes, but a patch on the left breast, or on the sleeve would also suffice.

I wonder if any Montreal fans will get a Centennial Jersey with the name "Racicot" on the back? For the uninitiated, he has a goaltender who earned the nickname, "Red Light Raciot." True fans will understand why. How about a similar Bruins' jersey in the future with the name "Cherry" on the back? Don's NHL playing career consisted of one game during the 1955 Stanley Playoffs. I'm sure fans of all NHL teams can come up with similar ideas. My personal favorite would be a commemorative Sabres jersey with the name (Paul) Cyr on the back!

I thought it was a little mean that the Habs were selling Maple Leafs 67 sweaters in the gift shop as well.

If you mean spending hundreds of millions to lose out to the Tampa Rays, then yeah, the Yankees are unmatched.

McLean's Pub is definitely the ritual stop before hockey games in Montreal... then after the game--- those fine establishments on St. Catherine street!!

I figured out the 9.5 Flames jersey from last week. The #9 was for Lanny and the half was for his 'stache which is a completely seperate entity. Some say it was an alien involved in a symbiotic relationship with the Mac in which it granted Lanny super hockey abilities in exchange for room and board.
I say three digit jerseys are a fail unless all players/fans are forced to wear their IQ's.

The Peel Pub is also a decent place for all hockey-related stuff, whether it be pre-game, to watch the game itself, or afterwards drunkedness. Though McLean's does have good booze selection...

The Peel Pub? Is that where the bartender throws a bunch of people out early in the night for drunken behavior and then stops doing it later on, no matter how drunk people are? And they charge you random amounts for your drinks and ignore patrons for hours on end because they aren't good enough?

Why do Americans seem to always end up on Crescent or Peel? Next time check out St-Denis street, or as the anglos call it, "St-Laurent's hot little French sister". You can tell the hotties you voted for Obama =P
And maple whisky is all sorts of win indeed. They also make a maple eau de vie called Fine Sève. Check it out, drink it down, much pleasure will ensue.

About a block west of the Peel, I used to enjoy the Mad Hatter's. Not much on hockey banter, or even giant screens, but if it's college girls that you seek, that place was like the university version of a young girls' birthday party, complete with hundreds of different chairs that you'd have to maneuvre through until the music stopped. You'd need a blindfold to miss "pinning" the tail on all that sweet sweet ass, donkey-style. Yee-haw, yee-haw.

@ N.Y. Nightmare (#7), you obviously don't know anything about hockey & the tradition of the Montreal Canadiens if you think the N.Y. (We try to BUY a world series every year with a classless owner) Yankees. Have you ever watched a ceremony of a Montreal Canadiens game? It defines the word "Class." The Yankees, however, lost their "class" when Steinbrenner bought the team.

Ok, I have something to say to all the Montreal Canajin fans out there. I've really getting sick and tired of all the clamouring going on about you guys. Yeah it's you're 100th anniversery, the allstar game is in Montreal, and basically the entire team made the allstar game. So in theorym, if the Canajins are a complete ALL STAR team, then wouldn't they be in first and not in 4th place???? Why was the entire Canajin team voted? cuz no one outside of Montreal (and south of Canada) really cares about hockey and no one really voted. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of hockey fans out in the good ol' US of A. They should change the way the players are decid........ah, just forget about the allstar game anyways. With all the hoopla going on about the Canajins this year, I hope you guys fall flat on your face and not even make the playoffs. Me? I can't wait to see my Flyers choke again in the playoffs. But I wouldn't mind the Cup on your 100th b-day.
