When the New York Rangers lost tough guy Colton Orr(notes) to the Toronto Maple Leafs, there was opening for someone who could provide sandpaper in the lineup and protect his teammates (now including the glass-like Marian Gaborik(notes)).
Enter Donald Brashear(notes). Enter a player who became Public Enemy No. 1 in New York after his late hit on Blair Betts(notes) in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals last April, knocking the Rangers' best penalty killer out for the remainder of the playoffs with a broken orbital bone.
At the time, Rangers fans were calling for Brashear's banishment and expressed their disappointment in the NHL for allowing a repeat offender from continuing to be a "thug." Now, Rangers fans will have to come to grips with the fact that Brashear will be wearing their colors for the next two seasons. While there's plenty of utter disgust being expressed about the move, isn't it like Jerry Seinfeld said about how, at the end of the day, it's just really about rooting for the color of the team's laundry?
New York general manager Glen Sather doesn't seem concerned with the locker room accepting a guy who basically turned the tide in their first-round series this past season: "I think our players are excited to have him in the room. They know he's going to be the man. It's a tough job to do."
While Betts isn't expected to be back with the Rangers, it would be fun to see those two run into each other on the first day of training camp.
Now, almost 24 hours after Brashear joined the Rangers, the Blueshirt blogosphere is reacting.
Blueshirt Banter is ready to forgive and forget as long as it fills a hole in the roster:
I know most of you aren't thrilled with this, can't say I am either, but they need a tough guy with Pronger around. It's not like Brashear is going to get a whole lot of ice time anyway.
The Rivalry is on the fence about the decision:
In the past 3 years, Brashear has been suspended twice for actions he has done AGAINST the Rangers! He sucker-punched Aaron Ward(notes) (something we all wanted to do) and then tried to decapitate Blair Betts. One, I assume Betts won't be back. Two, it's a decent move from a hockey sense (he is more talented of a player than Orr) but I'm not sure I'll be able to root for Brashear, especially when he fights Orr in Toronto. Of course, I'll always root for the Rangers, but rooting for him will be very hard.
Finally, ScottyHockey might sum up how majority of Rangers Nation feels this afternoon:
All of the massive goodwill that Glen earned by dealing away the [Gomez] (Ed. Note: Apologies to the offended, as Scotty Hockey used a term here that's used on his blog regarding Gomez that could be taken as racially insensitive) is now gone as Sather has signed Donald Brashear.
Brashear is the worse kind of criminal in hockey and has no place on a NHL roster, much less ours.
....
I feel sick to my stomach. It is a good thing that the Rangers forced us to pay up front for our season tickets because I wouldn't have renewed.
That said, aren't these feelings temporary? After Brashear's first knockout of a Philadelphia Flyers player or huge hit on some New York Islanders guy, won't Rangers fans start forgetting about the hit on Betts and be back to banging the glass in his honor?

I am more concerned about filling some other holes on the team. We are loaded with talented D-men (with the exception of Redden, of course.) I hope Slats can dump Rosival and maybe another young D prospect for a pivot (Brad Richards, anyone?) to round out the team.

It will be fun to see the Avery-Brashear tag team. Avery sets em up, Brashear knocks em down!

Seriously though, Orr was at least an eager and willing participant most of the time, Brahs think he is Gretzky most of the time... and though he does have skills beyond hugging, his fights will be mostly either him hugging somebody or not fighting because he doesn't deem the opponent worthy....

Orr was decent but doesn't have the intimidation presence Donald has.
Sure, I didn't like what he did to Betts as a Ranger fan, but as a hockey fan I didn't like when Orr went and tried to decapitate Alex Ovechkin a couple of years back... none of my fellow Rangers fans have been bringing that 6 game suspension up while talking about how much Orr was a respected, hard working enforcer.
I've nothing against Orr, outside of the fact that he is a marginal skater... but Donald is a much greater asset to the team in both intimidation as well as agitator... The same fans that hated Barnaby and Ulfie before we got them then have done nothing but wish they were still on our team are the same ones that will be loving Donald by the Christmas break.

Orr obviously wanted a longer-term deal than the Rangers were prepared to offer him. Skills-wise it's a wash at best, I think that Brashear is a better player and fighter than Orr. Dry your tears Ranger fans, Pronger will ultimately anger all of us more than Brash has ever done. It's a much better move than the majority of Ranger fans are willing to admit. All this crying makes us look like Caps or Penguin fans, so let's act like the overgrown adolescents we all are.

Even with Gaborik, we are sadly lacking in the goal production area.
We have what 2 guys who could conceivably score 25 or more? And you think clearing the net, size and a playmaker are our only problems?

Maybe it's just me, but I don't find it too hard to hate a player on teams I cheer for. Nothing could ever stop me from being a Blueshirts fan, but I will wish Brashear into the pits of hell every time I see his stupid face wearing that beloved jersey.
