Puck Daddy - NHL

The men who dared dress as Carolina Hurricanes Storm Squad dancers. The New Jersey Devils fans, turning the Meadowlands parking lot into a temporary community of trash talk and pregame brews. The Edmonton Oilers fans who used gallons of body paint to lather themselves in orange and blue.

Director Simon Dekker met a cornucopia of fans while filming "Puckheads," his feature-length documentary about the NHL's devoted masses. But the one that lingers with the viewer is Joe from Buffalo.

Dekker met him at a Buffalo Sabres game, running down the street with a huge Stanley Cup replica during the 2006 playoffs. Its base was a 45-gallon drum on wheels.

It was a beer bong.

"I found many fans that were pretty far out. It's definitely an upbeat thing that goes on," said Dekker.

He spent time with Joe, his friends and his family; which offered him the opportunity to relay one of the strangest tales to emerge from the over 40 hours of raw footage he shot for "Puckheads."

With the help of a friend, Joe was carrying the beer bong Cup contraption over his head. A girl noticed it, and told them she wanted to kiss the Cup. After doing so, she abruptly pushed the thing away, catching Joe off guard. "He thought to himself about all the time he had spent making this trophy, so he didn't want to drop it," recalled Dekker.

"So he ended up dislocating his shoulder."

That's the kind of passion on display in "Puckheads": the nonsensical devotion of fans to their favorite teams in their favorite sport. But what makes Dekker's film an interesting take on the subject -- and as you'll see in the clip he's provided us -- is the scholarly and academic approach the filmmaker takes in attempting to explain the behavior.

Dekker, 51, is Dutch born but lives in Calgary. He was a sports cameraman for television back in the 1980s, and the way fans acted and reacted at games always fascinated him.

In 2006, he finally had an opportunity to explore the subject on film. "I was doing some work with folks in Calgary, on The Red Mile," he said. "The Flames were gone in five or six games that year, so that project was done. I was asked if I had anything I wanted to do that year, and I said, 'I've had one that's been burbling in my mind for a few decades.'"

"Puckheads," which during its initial release was called "A Search for Meaning," was filmed during the 2006 Stanley Cup playoffs, which allowed the filmmaker to capture fans during the most intense time of the season. Passions are on display, tears flow ... it's the essence of the fan experience at that time of year.

What Dekker's film attempts to do is find the psychological roots of those passions through interviews with professors and authors, who opine about the sports fan experience. Do fans and teams have communal or one-way relationship? How does the end of the season play into our own sense of mortality? Can fandom be considered a religious experience?

"When I started doing the academic inquiry, I had all of this information and was able to focus on a few things that had become pretty obvious," said Dekker. "What the academics bring to the film is this inquiry: What's really going on underneath the hood? What drives these people to be hockey fans?"

The following clip explores one of the true hallmarks of the fan experience: unabashed superstition and puckhead voodoo. From lucky underwear to branding a piece of Alberta beef to throw on the ice, ala the Detroit Red Wings' octopus:

Dekker said one of his favorite concepts presented by the scholars is that of "annual renewal" for fans when their teams are eliminated from championship contention. "That we renew ourselves constantly. That every year we have a clean slate, as it were. And that's not what happens in real life," he said. "But each year for the fan, it's the clearing of karma."

"Puckheads" has its analytical side, but it also has a collection of interviews with truly quirky and distinctive fans from around the NHL. The film chronicles everything from tailgating to ticket scalping to fan attire from city to city.

"The team colors ... that's your flag. That's how you identify yourself. Across the NHL, you see people aligning themselves with teams by buying those jerseys. It really is a spectacle to see an arena full of red, for example," Dekker said.

Since the film was shot in the 2006 playoffs, there's a heavy emphasis on some of the team involved, like the Hurricanes and the Oilers. But the themes Dekker explores are universal, and he believes they go beyond hockey.

"I feel that the film has great general interests," he said.

The film played in 2007, where it was given a harsh review in Edmonton's Vue Weekly. Dekker currently has "Puckheads" with Horizon Motion Pictures, and he said last month that they're "sending it around" for potential distribution. Contract Horizon (email) for more information about the film's availability. Dekker's Web site can be found here.

Meanwhile, Dekker is proud of this glimpse into the wild world of hockey fandom -- even if one of his best leads didn't pan out.

"A guy [in Buffalo] claimed to have sold his kidney for playoff tickets," Dekker said. "He assured me this was the case, I called his bluff and of course he didn't have his kidney removed. But it was good story."

Ya know Wysh. In Detroit they throw the whole octupus, not just one tentacle. If the Oiler fans really want this thing to work perhaps they may have to start thinking about their veal industry.

There is this guy from South East PA. That has no life and shows up uninvited and unaffiliated to every hockey rated event with a little dog that he leashes to a shinny goal and lets kids shoot tennis balls at the net and the dog jumps up and catches them in his mouth. The creepy part is he sits in his car before hand and puts what could only be called a mask a burn victim would wear and wears it all day. He calls himself the anonymous hockey blogger. Mr. He to be top 5 creepy people I have ever meet(and I've had lunch with my buddy who works in a mental facility), but is PASSIONATE about hockey. The conundrum is what do you do with a guy that is so passionate about your sport, but at the same time is the last person you want affiliated with it?

I'm not from the Carolinas but I've heard from almost every who has ever gone there. The Caniacs have THE BEST pre game parking lot blow outs. In fact I have heard their regular season tailgating has rivaled other teams playoff parking lot parties. I glad to hear that a Sun Belt team is making this sport great.

Nice... This should be a keeper. It'll be fun to see all the Puckheads, especially those in cities where most of us assume the fans, or lack there of, stink... A 45 gallon drum which is both a Stanley Cup replica and a beer bong!? Well done my friend, well done!
    Lets go BUFFALO!!!

I attend Canes games regularly and it is pretty cool having BBQ and beer in January before the game. The tailgating is pretty fun, now for the teams play, that is another story.

I saw this film a few weeks ago, and it is a good watch. I found it a little bit extreme, as it was a little overboard like an episode of Cheaters with Joey Greco.
I'm not sure if all the fans are real, or if it was somewhat staged - I've been to hundreds of NHL games, and never saw any characters ever that are presented in this film.
Still a good watch though - I would give it 6/10.

Man, I miss getting bombed in my old, hoopty, 86 Volvo over at Continental. Those pregames were fun as hell. Walking out in that overpass was the best, post-game. So many drunken fights in that thing.

Whole octopus or just a tentacle, it didn't really matter, now did it? The 8th seeded Oilers knocked off your precious Wings in six games, after Detroit put up yet another [yawn] 124-point regular season. Meanwhile, Edmonton moved on - and on, and on - before succumbing to the lowly Cam Ward in Game 7.
Perhaps this wasn't the best time to trod out another tired old Detroitism. I'm sure there will be plenty more Red Wings articles for you to make your point. Unless they turn another 120+ point season into a first round exit. Rest up, you old farts.

Oh I forgot knucklehead. You people actually expect that everything people do is is strictly to impress Wings fans. Maybe the Oilers didn't fare so well last year, but try to stay on topic. The film, the article and my comment are all related. I know how you love to make everything about the Wings, but seriously - you said:
"If the Oiler fans really want this thing to work..."
So....did it work or not? Your team got beat, the Oil went to the Finals.
I won't try to make it about how Edmonton won 5 of 7 in the 80's on an article pertaining to 2006, if you promise to not bring up Detroit's dynasty of 2 Cups in the past 10 years.
    Deal?

Well I guess if the Red Wing organization sets the standard once again for the model franchise, then maybe you have a great point. Playing follow the leader must really get in your head Huet. It seems hiring Todd Mclellan (from the Wings) was a great 1st step toward greatness. Cheers!

So you guys create Mike Babcock in a test tube, then?
You hired him from the Ducks, so if I was in Cali (which for some reason you think I am), I'd throw it back in your face.
Truth is, I'm from Montreal, where Scotty Bowman produced the standard for the model franchise. You guys would still be the Dead Wings without his help.
    Debating you is too easy.

Huet, I knew there was a Montreal connection. I'm not here to debate pal, only to defend. I just cannot imagine why real hockey fan can't appreciate the Wings and what they have done in the last 10 years.
You must be the reason Pepe' came to Cali. (because Shark players care about their fans).
You sound to me like the guy that tries to pick a fight with the fan and his 10 year old son with the visiting teams' sweater on because he doesn't think like you.
    Me I'm just celebrating success.

Huet, we've had some debates all in good fun, but you need to rethink this here. "You guys would still be the Dead Wings without his [Scotty Bowman's] help." While Scotty was a huge part of our success, he's not the only reason. Number 1, he retired in 2002. By your logic, we would be back to being the Dead Wings 6 years later, which we are not obviously. We've won a Stanley Cup, 3 President's Trophies, 5 straight Division Titles, and 4 straight Regular Season Western Conference titles since he left. Number 2, you're forgetting an extremely important point here. Ken Holland. He came to Detroit 26 years ago. Since he took the helm, in 1997, Detroit is the winningest team in the NHL (603 wins). Holland is at least as much if not more of a part of our success as Scotty was.

Holland does deserve mad respect. His quote from yesterday is getting him a lot of heat, but he was just spitballin. I was just about to defend him on the Headlines page, but your buddy knucklehead would just turn it around to make it look like I was a Sharks fan who doesn't appreciate the Wings.
If you were to google huet'nt+wings+puckdaddy you'd probably come up with a bunch of hits from the past two days, but until ol' knucklehead started off with Comment #1 (defending, my arse) on the CL page, almost all of my related posts proclaimed my love for the best American franchise - and I sported a Hawks logo at the time!
So let me make it clear to your friend one more time. Detroit has, for almost 15 years, been the most successful franchise. Period. Over the course of history, the Wings have been more successful than Boston (except in the 70's) and Chicago (except in the 60's), by far. In the past 6 years, since Bowman retired, Detroit has successfully maintained their position at the top of the league. Over the past 12 years, with my Sens about to falter, they become undeniably the most consistently good regular season team, to go with their 3 Cups.
If you Wings supporters weren't so vocal and adversarial, nobody would argue with you, but despite knuclehead's claims, it is very frequently you guys who are the ones picking fights. I'm now done with the whole subject. I prefer to contribute non-partisan, non-denominational comments, as I am a fan of hockey first and the Habs second. (Sens, third; my fantasy players like Huet, fourth; other Canadian teams, fifth; the Leafs, 30th).
I wish your Wings the best of health, even if Rafalski is faking for the second year in a row. When Pronger took out Holmer, I almost kicked in my TV set. It should have been a Wings-Sens final, with the Wings going for their third consecutive Campbell this year. Good day, sirs.
