Hughes grossed over $1 million as a wide receiver and special teams player for the Kansas City Chiefs, including close to $400,000 in each of his final two seasons.

At times, that means getting rid of talented players because their personality or style of play does not fit what Pioli/Haley are seeking. There are nine members of the 2008 Chiefs playing for other teams in the NFL. Two of those players are starters, tight end Tony Gonzalez (Atlanta) and safety Bernard Pollard (Houston), at positions where the Chiefs have had some problems during the 2009 season.

Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Maurice Leggett is out for the season with a shoulder injury. Leggett was placed on injured reserve Wednesday. He hurt the shoulder Sunday in the Chiefs' 27-24 win over Pittsburgh. Leggett has played in 22 games with the Chiefs, including four starts, since entering the NFL as a rookie free agent last year.
