Pacman needs to play well to cash in with Cowboys

If Pacman Jones is to be paid like one of the top cornerbacks in the NFL, he will have to earn it. The four-year contract Jones signed with the Dallas Cowboys is worth $13.3 million, although he has a chance to earn more should he hit an escalator that would raise his 2011 base salary to the franchise tag for a cornerback according to the Dallas Morning News.

Jones' base salaries total $4.7 million in the first three years of the deal, but there's a huge bump in 2011. Provided he is reinstated by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, Jones will earn a $700,000 base salary this year, but he will not receive any signing bonus. The base salaries in 2009-11 are $1 million, $3 million and $7.25 million. He has March roster bonuses worth $250,000 and $255,000 due in 2009 and '10 and a $345,000 reporting bonus in 2010. He also has $250,000 workout bonuses in 2009 and 2010.

In order to really cash in, however, Jones has to play at a high level. If he is named to two Pro Bowls or intercepts seven passes in any two of the first three seasons and participates in 65 percent of the snaps, his base salary would jump up to the 2011 franchise tender.

Dallas sends Fasano, Ayodele to Miami for picks

The Miami Dolphins on Friday acquired tight end Anthony Fasano and inside linebacker Akin Ayodele from the Dallas Cowboys for a fourth-round draft pick, the 100th pick overall, in this weekend's draft. The deal had been confirmed by multiple sources, though neither team had confirmed it late Friday night according to the Palm Beach Post.

Fasano was drafted 53rd overall out of Notre Dame in 2006 when Dolphins football operations executive Bill Parcells and General Manager Jeff Ireland were with the Cowboys. Fasano had 14 catches for 143 yards and a touchdown last season. He is coming off reconstructive shoulder surgery.

Ayodele spent four seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars, then joined Cowboys as a free agent in 2006. The Cowboys were loaded at linebacker, especially after signing Zach Thomas, who was released by the Dolphins after 12 seasons. Ayodele started all except two games in his two seasons with Dallas. He had 95 tackles last season.

Dallas defenders insist they will not 'babysit' Pacman

According to Dallas Morning News columnist Jean-Jacques Taylor, the Dallas Cowboys' defensive players aren't going to babysit Pacman Jones.

They'll tell him where to go for a good time and give him the names of various places he should avoid. They'll invite him to their frequent off-season pool and bowling outings and their weekly dinners during the season. But the players insist they're not going to be part of Jerry Jones' security force.

They're not going to be chaperoning Pacman. Or calling him to make sure he's home by midnight. Or having the bouncers at various strip clubs phone them when he's on the premises. Nor should they. It's not their responsibility. Frankly, many of them are already sick of talking about Pacman. They roll their eyes at the mention of his name and insist they don't need him to win the Super Bowl. Or even a playoff game.

Cowboys, Titans work deal for Pacman Jones

The Tennessee Titans finally washed their hands of suspended cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones on Wednesday, agreeing in principle to trade him to the Dallas Cowboys.

Cowboys spokesman Rich Dalrymple confirmed the teams had an agreement, but no terms had been filed with the NFL office, which already had closed for the day. The Titans also confirmed the deal, adding that terms had to be finalized. The team had no further comment beyond a two-sentence e-mail.

Dalrymple declined to discuss specifics of the trade. ESPN.com reported the deal involved a fourth-round draft pick this weekend and another in 2009 if Jones plays this season. The Titans would pay back that selection in 2009 if Jones is not reinstated for this season.

Cowboys are willing to deal for a receiver

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones acknowledged Tuesday he has asked another team about the availability of a veteran wideout according to the San Antonio Express-News.

"I wouldn't give who it was, but the answer is yes, we have talked (with another team)" Jones told reporters in Irving. "I wouldn't give you a time frame on it either, if you're talking the last week or the last few days. But certainly since (the start) of the offseason."

With Terry Glenn's status for next season uncertain, the Cowboys are in the market for a receiver to take pressure off Terrell Owens. Speaking at a news conference to discuss the draft, Jones said the first round Saturday wouldn't yield such a player. Jones emphatically denied that he's talked to Cincinnati about the availability of disgruntled receiver Chad Johnson, who is threatening to sit out the season if he doesn't get a new contract. ESPN reported this week that the Bengals informed Washington, which was offering its first-round pick (No. 21) and a conditional third-rounder in 2009, that Johnson wasn't available. Arizona's Anquan Boldin and Detroit's Roy Williams are other veteran receivers the Cowboys could be eyeing.

Bengals turn down Washington offer for Chad Johnson

How serious are the Cincinnati Bengals about not giving in to Chad Johnson's trade demands? Serious enough to swat away an offer from the Washington Redskins that could have netted the Bengals two first-round draft picks, team and league sources told ESPN.com.

The Redskins offered its first-round pick, No. 21 overall, and a conditional third-rounder in 2009 that could escalate to a first rounder if Johnson and the Redskins hit certain performance levels, the sources said.

It was not the first time the Redskins approached the Bengals about a deal, but it was the first significant proposal. The Bengals have not only rejected the Redskins, but two other NFC East suitors — the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles — have been informed that there has been no change in the team's position that Johnson will not be traded.

  • Darren McFadden

The Dallas Cowboys own the 22d and 28th selections in the first round, and some have speculated they might be willing to part with both if Arkansas running back Darren McFadden slips down the draft board (perhaps to the Jets at 6, or the Patriots at 7) according to the Boston Globe.

After exchanging contract proposals with starting running back Marion Barber last week, the Cowboys might be more inclined to make such a move.

According to published reports in Dallas, the Cowboys are offering a five-year deal with a total value of $30 million, while Barber is seeking a deal worth $40 million. Barber becomes a free agent after the season.

Roy Williams might not play on third downs for Dallas

    Roy Williams

    Getty Images

This is a make-or-break season for Dallas Cowboys safety Roy Williams.

He might be the only man who has started in the Pro Bowl who has so many questions about his role in his organization. Some people at Valley Ranch don't trust him on the field anymore. Don't be surprised if Williams is benched on third downs this fall. Teams love throwing to the tight end on third down to keep the chains moving.

Williams knows he's not the same player he was a few years ago. His ears work. He knows the critics are out there. He did himself no favors in the locker room last year by being suspended for a horse collar tackle on Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb. Wade Phillips also chose not to start him for two games. He didn't register a single sack in 2007.

Barber, Canty face signing deadline Friday

Friday is the deadline for Dallas Cowboys restricted free agents Marion Barber and Chris Canty to sign offer sheets with other teams. If the players haven't signed offer sheets, Dallas will retain exclusive negotiating rights with those players.

Barber was tendered at the first- and third-round level, putting a one-year, $2.562 million offer on the table, while Canty was tendered at the first-round level ($2.017 million). According to sources, the Cowboys and Barber remain far apart in negotiations on a long-term deal. The team and Canty's representatives have discussed an extension. Canty plans to sign the tender shortly after the deadline passes.

The team's third restricted free agent, center/guard Joe Berger, signed his one-year, $927,000 tender with the team Thursday, according to agent Tom Tafelski according to the Dallas Morning News.
