Will Holt bolt St. Louis when contract expires?

Torry Holt raised eyebrows three weeks ago when he talked about reuniting with his brother Terrence — a safety for the Carolina Panthers — when the final two years of his St. Louis Rams contract were up.

"I wanted to just send in my resignation to the Rams and join him down here," Holt told Raleigh, N.C., television station WRAL with a laugh. "What better place to come and play football than in your home state?' "

Holt made the remarks at a charity golf tournament he and his brother held in North Carolina. Terrence signed as a free agent with Carolina earlier this offseason after spending the 2007 season with Arizona. To a degree, it was clear Holt was joking, particularly the remark about "resigning" from the Rams. But on Saturday, in his first comments to St. Louis reporters since the end of the 2007 season, it was clear that Holt is taking a realistic view about his future with the Rams.

In a draft that team officials hope will help propel the Carolina Panthers back into playoff contention, Carolina appears to have strengthened itself significantly at offensive tackle, running back, tight end and free safety. It also boosted an already strong linebacker corps.

"I like the looks of it on paper," coach John Fox said of the post-draft roster. "But the reality is until you start playing, you don't know."

Fox said the Panthers achieved their goal of getting bigger and more physical overall, plus faster in the skill positions.

  • When describing the Tampa Two defense, Detroit Lions Rod Marinelli has said the same thing over and over and over again — its success is rooted in the ability to get a dominant pass rush from the front four.

The Lions did not have a dominant pass rush last year and they traded away their sack leader — tackle Shaun Rogers with seven sacks — and need to replace that pass pressure. The Lions have the 15th overall pick and most draft experts believe there is only one worthy pass rusher for that spot -- and even that's a long shot.

Derrick Harvey of Florida has all the qualities the Lions are looking for but several league sources say Harvey won't get past the Carolina Panthers (who have the 13th overall pick) — if he manages to slide that far.

    Carolina's Rucker to announce retirement

The Carolina Panthers have called a 1 p.m. press conference Tuesday to announce the retirement of long-time defensive end Mike Rucker, according to sources.

Rucker, 33, had been contemplating retirement at the end of last season, but then told reporters a few weeks later that he planned to return for 2008. However, after meeting with the Panthers coaching staff and front office and getting no serious offers from other teams, Rucker began to have second thoughts. Rucker's contract with the Panthers officially expired in late February, at which point he could have signed with any other team as an unrestricted free agent.

A second-round draft pick in 1999 out of Nebraska, Rucker played nine seasons for the Panthers — the last seven as a starter -- and went to one Pro Bowl. He finished his career with 55.5 sacks, second in franchise history only to Julius Peppers.
