Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher disputed a report that he threatened to retire if the Bears don't reward him with more guaranteed money according to the Chicago Tribune.

"I never said that I was going to quit,'' Urlacher told the Tribune early Friday morning. "That's just a gossip column. Reports like that is why I choose not to speak to the media.''

Urlacher, who is seeking a multi-year contract extension that would pad the nine-year, $57-million contract he signed in 2003, has not attended the Bears' on-going voluntary workouts and said he is unsure if he will attend the team's mandatory minicamp May 30-June 1 if a contract agreement is not reached. He also cited the opportunity to spend more time with his children as a reason for staying in Arizona. He did not express plans to boycott training camp. The Bears, who sit about $16 million under the salary cap, continue to have talks with Urlacher's agents.

If he is complaining that his contract is "outdated" because of the inflation iand increase in contracts the past few seasons, shouldnt his agent pointed that out when he signed his contract so that they would not be dealing with this distraction right now? Urlacher is supposed to be the captain and face of the franchise, way to set an example!

Seriously. Who signs a 9 year deal and then says it's outdated? Every time someone wants to renegotiate it makes me sick. What I'd like to ask all of these guys is "If you don't play up to your contract or get hurt or demoted, can we tear it up and renegotiate?"

He is supposed to be the face of our franchise. This kind of stuff is hard to swallow sometimes. I don't blame him for not really wanting to talk to the media though.

And the fans who are paying $70+ a ticket for nosebleed seats deserve it too!

First off I hope they do get Urlacher and Harris under contract for the entirety of their playing careers. They are certainly worth it. My problem is with signing a 9 year deal and feeling it gets outdated. And when I talk about renegotiating that is directed toward those select athletes who "get theirs" and abandon their teams who invested in them. Those of us who do pay top dollar for seats have a hard time understanding how people can feel that they're underpaid (when they make more money in 1 year than most of us will accumulate in our lives).
And for the record, you actually got the wrong guy........... I competed on the professional level for a few years before serious injury costed me my career.

$57 million dollars and he's complaining about money? Then claiming that he may not show up to a mandatory camp because he wants to spend time with his children. How about not using your children as an excuse and set an example for them by fulfilling the contract you signed, Urlacher? I'm sure that if you raid the change jar in the kitchen pantry you can find just enough money to bring them along with you to camp. Biggest, toughest whiner in the league.

Hey adittam, why are you going to reward a player who for the past 3 years has had a decline in his play. How many superbowl titles did he bring to the bears. The only thing he has done is knock up half the women in Illinois. Trade his old tired a** for Chad Johnson from Cincinatti.

Wouldn't this be awesome if we could all do this. Just call our bosses and tell em we don't like the deal that WE AGREED TO and we won't be back till we get a big fat raise. I want to live in that world.

Urlacher is the best player on the team. He deserves more money and the bears are in trouble if he sits out most of the season. The game's best MLB deserves the best.

You guys don't get it, do you? The Bears (and every other team in the NFL) are making ridiculous profits every year because the public is willing to pay for it in ticket sales, merchandise, and products that are advertised on tv during games, and they're 16 million under the salary cap! Would you rather that money go to the players, who are the ones risking not being able to play with their grandchildren because their knees and backs are so shot at 50, or to the owners? I say pay the players. On top of that, everyone here needs to get past the fact that they make a bazillion dollars and "should be happy with it"...we live in a capitalistic country, and the NFL is a business. The reason they can, and should be able to, hold out is because they possess skill sets that 99.9% of the population doesn't...Bear Boy and Flammy The Belly Lint, the reason you can't tell your bosses you quit unless you get a raise is because they know they can hire someone else to do your job just as well as you are doing it for the same amount you're making. Just NOT TRUE with elite athletes...you're NOT comparing apples to apples, my friends. Now, if you were the equivalant of Albert Einstein, and were working for a consulting firm, you could threaten to quit if you didn't "get a big fat raise"...obviously, that's not the case.

everyone calling him a baby and a whiner is hilarious... He wants to extend his current contract... cannot be blamed, his career is already shortened by the way he plays. I'd get a couple more years at the end of my contract to stay with the same team that help make me a star too.

finally somebody that knows what hes talking about #19 and even if Urlacher is on the downside of his career it will take years for the bears or anyone else to find anyone like him, and if you look at people during a bears game 70% of them are wearing his jersey he is loved around here and if the bears are smart they should give him a new contract

Didn't Briggs just sign a contract for way less than Urlacher? Here is the deal Brian, you play awesome when the defense as a team plays awesome, you take even Mike Brown out of the mix and you are a good MLB at best, but not great. Your leadership hasn't carried over to the new players, and Hester; more than you has been the media darling and the "NEW" face of the franchise. I say; to the Bear's GM: Stop over paying for a defense, that is hot and cold and injury prone, stop taking free agents that are that way for a reason; pay for some God D@#m offense starting with O'line, and trade the super hero that hasn't been so super for the past couple of seasons while he still has market value! Good luck trying to recover what is left of your contract in Chicago from any other team Brian.

My take is he is hurt more thanhe's leading on and knows his best years are behind him, this felling about outdated contracts seems to be the mindset for players nowadays . honor you contract and play or don't sign these long term deals.
