As Tony Romo stood at the podium Dec. 16 at Texas Stadium last season, water dripped from an ice-filled bandage that covered his right thumb. Earlier that night, Romo completed 13 of 36 passes for 214 yards, had three passes intercepted and suffered a bruised thumb as the Cowboys lost to Philadelphia, 10-6. Romo had a career-low passer rating of 22.2, and it was only the third time in his first 24 starts he did not throw a touchdown pass.
With the Eagles returning to Texas Stadium for their final regular-season visit Monday, Romo has already reviewed that game.
"We beat ourselves in a couple of areas," Romo said. "We just made a poor choice or made a bad play, whether we just missed a guy in protection or I went to the wrong guy, or somebody just dropped a route. You don't realize it, but two or three of those on third down, and all of a sudden it looks like you can't move the ball where if you get those, you're moving the ball. Some days that's how the game goes."
Romo's had two days like "those" against the Eagles at home.
In 2006, he was limited to a season-low 142 yards passing with a touchdown and an interception as the Eagles won, 23-7, to prevent the Cowboys from clinching the NFC East. But Romo sees the numbers as a coincidence rather than a trend.
"I think each time playing them, you get more comfortable in the aspect of trying to do different things," said Romo, who did not use the thumb injury as an excuse in December or Wednesday. "We'll see what they bring this week."
