The Oakland Raiders lost 17-3 to its cross-Bay rival San Francisco 49ers Saturday while simultaneously losing the services of brand-new tight end Kevin Boss(notes) in the process.

CSN Bay Area reports that Boss, who had 531 receiving yards and five touchdowns last year for the New York Giants, sprained his knee and is "week to week."

ESPN points out that because Raiders coach Hue Jackson's "timetable was vague, it is impossible to gauge whether or not Boss will be ready for the regular season." The Raiders open the season against the Denver Broncos on Sept. 12.

The 27-year-old, who was picked in the fifth round of the 2007 draft out of Western Oregon, signed a four-year, $16 million deal with the Raiders in early August.
