Linebacker Rosevelt Colvin inked a one-year contract with the New England Patriots this morning, a league source told the Boston Globe.

Colvin, who played for the Patriots from 2003-2007, has been out of football this season after being cut by the Houston Texans at the end of training camp. He addresses a need at outside linebacker, where the Patriots have been without Adalius Thomas (forearm) and also had Pierre Woods leave Sunday's loss to the Steelers in the third quarter with a mouth injury.

Mike Vrabel and Woods have been starting at outside linebacker in the 3-4 alignment in recent weeks. The top backups are rookies Gary Guyton and Vince Redd.

The Patriots had an open roster spot after placing cornerback Jason Webster on injured reserve Tuesday, and thus did not have to make a move to create room for Colvin.

Welcome back Roosevelt, this move should have been made weeks ago. If we hadn't missed out on Hall and Law maybe we wouldn't have Deltha O'Neal, Lewis Sanders and Jonathan Wilhite chasing people all over the field!

    First!!!!
It's about time Belichick signed Rosie again. The Pats never should have released this guy, one of the LB standouts on last years team. Now, they need to get Seau out of retirement, as well as Lynch, then you will have tried and true, tested and battle-ready veterans to help out an injury-ridden and inexperienced defense.

well, I am not First! Sorry! But yes, I agree with you elguapo342005, although, I think Hall would have been trouble. I think Law would have been nice to have, but it is not too late to get Seau and Lynch out of retirement.

Shouldn't have been cut to begin with. Lynch would be great , but I think He's done. What is Thomas's status of returning ?

Thomas seems to be week-to-wk, which is nowhere as bad as IR. He was initially thought to be done for this year. Hopefully, Pats can pull off the west coast sweep and bring Thomas back to help them remove the Jets out of first

How can you guys say he shouldn't have been cut in the first place? Are you nuts? He was released by the Texans!! Obviously he's not the player he once was and they only brought him back because he knows the system and they are desperate. Hopefully he can help, but don't expect him to be a pro-bowler again.

Hi Football Goddess! I love Tek too! I will be extremely peeved if the Sox cannot pull off a deal for Tek. They blew it with Fisk years ago and should not let this stalwart, backbone of the team, go. It would be sacrilege!
For carguy, I think you are right. No one player can make the difference, but Colvin does know the system. He played well enough to avoid being cut, which is what I meant. Still, they seemed to believe he was injury prone, despite his playing damn near the full schedule last two years with Pats. Maroney should be traded. He's great when he plays, but plays rarely due to injury proneness. He is like Ty Poole.

Hey Cheatriots where did you read that? Are we reading the same posts? The Patriots needed someone to fill a linebacker position nothing less nothing more. Who better then someone who already knows the system and for little money. The Superbowl is not even mentioned. Be a fan of the game- not your hand.

Unfortunately the best defensive player on the Pats was lost in game one and his name is Tom Brady. He would be able to extend drives to keep the defense off the field which is important with so many vets. Lets just enjoy the rest of the season and hope they make the playoffs. Maybe they can play the Steelers and at least take some cheap shots.

Losing Adalius Thomas is a bigger loss than most people know. We had to play against that guy on Baltimore twice a year. He's a quality player.
