Northcutt excited to be with Lions

Dennis Northcutt(notes) told the Detroit Free Press he has no problem being traded from the Jacksonville Jaguars to the winless Detroit Lions.

"I'm excited," Northcutt said in a telephone interview. "I feel like the Lions went out and won the Super Bowl last year, for real. I'm just excited about playing this game for a team that wants me and came out and got me."

The Lions agreed to trade safety Gerald Alexander(notes) to the Jaguars for Northcutt, a wide receiver and punt returner. According to the Free Press, Northcutt mmediately dove into the playbook.

"I don't think I'm that far behind," Northcutt said. "I've studied on the plane on the way back, and I know a lot of the offense already, I must say."

Northcutt, a nine-year NFL veteran, has run many of the Lions' plays before. He mostly needs to learn new terminology. But he wants to make sure he knows every receiver position inside and out before training camp opens July 31, so he doesn't have to play catch up with his new teammates, the Free Press reported.

GOOD LUCK DUDE. I've always thought Northcutt was an excellent receiver.
Hope they can get to at least 8-8

Good luck to Dennis Northcutt. I'm a Jags fan and honestly believe he didn't get the full and fair shake he deserved in Jacksonville. Jax QB David Garrard was usually staring at the opponents' defensive line team portrait when he was 2 steps into a 3-step drop last year, and Garrard seemed to be completely locked in on Matt "Spooner" Jones. Northcutt never figured prominently in Jacksonville's offense, despite the times he was shown as a reliable receiver when the ball WAS (rarely) thrown his way. All the best, Dennis. :(

The Lions are working it. They (so far) seem to be doing well from the draft to their free agent pick ups. We shall se how it plays out on the field but they are looking like a team that wants to win. FINALLY!!

Every time i hear about this team it makes me sick because this team is run by a bunch of morons. Mr. Ford is a disgrace to the city, to the NFL, and to the sport itself. At least they finally got rid of placeMatt (I draft wr's in the first round 3 consecutive years) Millhead. Lions marketing campaign...."Hey, we'll win more than we did last year". Ford should be embarrassed but he isn't. Northcutt isn't anything special but they'll get more out of him than they did from Charles Rodgers or Mike whoever it was from USC. I'm not a Lions fan but I hate to see this level of incompetence. Hugh Culverhouse, who owned the Buccaneers in the 70's and 80"s was the same way, and they got better after he died and someone else started running the show. Thats what it's going to take in Detroit.

liar! I don't think Millen was the only problem in management they had.

Joe Cool...being from Detroit we unfortunate fans see more than the average around the block fans in the league. Yes Millen was an idiot that made bad decisions. Yes...the level of incompetence over the last 10 years is horrific. Those are points that are made and made well. But one thing you have to understand is there is more going on then the picture the media is painting. Example...Ford Jr., the younger, smarter one...last season made a statement to the free press saying if it were up to him "Millen would have been fired 2 years ago". 4 days later he was let go. Then all of the sudden the lions make an above average draft and start signing quite decent players...landing Julian Peterson and Larry Foote to compliment the likes of Ernie Sims was brilliant. They went from one of the worst linebacking situations to perhaps a top ten in the league (maybe)...but never the less things are happening and its moving in a positive direction. As a lions fan every season I get excited and then let down...so I'm not going to say they are going to win a lot of ball games...but what I can say is that all things considered and what happened last year...they are already perhaps "one"! of the leagues most improved teams. And personally I think Ford Jr., although softly right now...has his hands in many of the decisions. When Sr., passes(and we all know he's still in the 60-70's when it comes to football)...then Jr., will take over and do it right!!! That is if the team isn't sold by then!

    # 5 you forgot about Al Davis look what he's done to the Raiders!!!!!
#6 detroit sports fans support their teams win or lose unlike some other fans who
jump on the wagon ONLY when their teams win!!!!! the Lions are like the chicago cubs
and the fictional bad news bears!!!!!I no longer reside in the state of michigan but still pull for their
teams I spent the first 32 years of my life in detroit despite the NEGATIVE press and the jealousy of other
teams (especially the hockey fans)in my opinion there is no greater place than DETROIT like I said it was HOME
for 32 years the rest of you who bash it just don't get it

The Lions are making some moves here that should help them in 2009, but for real? 8-8? Even if Stafford is the next Matt Ryan, they still had a terrible defense. They have added there too, but not enough to turn them into an average team.
As far as Detroit fans, I respect them for sticking with the Lions. I think it's pathetic though that some fans play the "jealousy" card (like post #13 with the Wings and UMich fans). Are you kidding me? We're not jealous, we're just sick of your fans acting like you're better than everyone else. As I recall, the Wings just lost in shocking fashion to Pittsburgh, and UMich just missed a bowl game. Ask grandma to bake up a nice humble pie for the 4th of July. Oh, right... regardless of who you root for, happy Independence Day!

I hope the Lions can be competitive this season. As much as I cheered on the perfect season in reverse, now I want to see the return of the black and blue division. The early 90's when all 4 teams and Tampa Bay were beating each other to a pulp, man that was some fun games.

Well put Clinton H and lord.stanley19. I agree 100% with what you said. I can only sit in my house this upcoming season and hope that the Lions will be at least half as competitive as they were last season. My expectations for them this year is to win at least one more game than they did last season. That's always been my philosiphy. I will support the Lions until the day I die.
Here's to hoping for a successful season.

I still think last years 0-16 record was planned. They had to fight too hard for some of those losses....it was planned in order to get the high draft choices and a chance to rebuild....

I feel obtaining Northcutt in the passsing game will improve the Lions paasing core if the offensive line is able to effectively to block and hold up . I not quite convince on the the running team at this time. The defense looks better than last year on paper. Will see how team effort and heart plays in to 2009 team. Nevertheless I'm rooting for the improve Lions.
