New York Jets benching safety Kerry Rhodes despite $33.5 million salary

“KerryNew York Jets free safety Kerry Rhodes(notes) signed a contract extension two years ago that would pay him $33.5 million and even though he's making that kind of dough, coach Rex Ryan is going to go ahead and bench the fellow, according to FOXSports.

Jets players are apparently telling FOX that Eric Smith(notes) will get the start over Rhodes. Unfortunately for Smith, the benching will likely be a short one. It's believed that this is a benching that is meant to send a message: nobody is expendable and everybody needs to work harder.

Rhodes hasn't had a very good year. He hasn't had one interception or forced one fumble and he's only broken up five passes. Even so, a much bigger problem for the Jets is the fact that the offense keeps turning over the ball and the passing game that looked so good very early in the season is now ranked near the bottom for the whole league.

    Everything that is miserably happening to this team couldn't have happened to a better organization. fire the defensive coach, bench your safety, hell layoff the towel boy for all we care, do anything and everything to show that you're all about winning Fatso, none of it will work. Look at these FRAUDS, 4-6, to think that people had the nerve to say these loudmouth talking losers bunch were actually going anywhere. Nothing but a bunch of trash talking FRAUDS, that is all there is to this team. I know what's wrong with the J-E-T-S Jets, they won their "Superbowl" in week 2 so they're having a season hangover, ahahahaha, f0cking Losers, you f0cking Suck, f0ck the Jets, you FRAUDS.

    playin2x you automatically think it's a Patriot fan! If anyone is an assclown monkey around here it's you for assuming. So why don't you try coming back when or if you ever have anything "intelligent" to say. Don't be angry with Zo for stating the obvious. Personally, I kinda like "Fatso" he's a breath of fresh air, as far as coach's go.

    rex didnt control the roster he took over now he's tryin to clean up the mess mangina left him .......i do think he'll be a good coach in about 2 year's or so but he gotta stop the cryin & whinning about call's or runnin up the score all of it just knuckle up & play ball

    LOL you morons actually think rex ryan is gonna get fired in one year he has made more progress than mangini did the whole time he was there. Rex is a good coach trying to get a new defense in a rookie QB who came out of college to early and his best player is on IR common sense guys. If only there had been a great saftey in the draft that could make stops in the back field and hit like hell he'd fit right in you know Kinda like our Louis Delmas LOL thats right there was HAHAHAHA!!!

    Not to defend Ratgini, but he did take the Jets to the playoffs and beat the Patriots once in his first season. His second year was awful, but he did have the intense pleasure of ratting out his "mentor" in an effort to take down Belichick. Then came the third year collapse after beating the Patriots and the undefeated Titans back to back. The collapse was of course blamed on the FRB, he was swiftly canned, and then along comes Trash-Talk-O'Saurus Rex and brings in some "heavy hitters" and promises the playoffs. The real problem with the Jets is their organization, starting with the GM Tannenbaum, who has a fixation with beating the Patriots and keeps looking for quick fixes like Brett Favre and Sexy Rexy. The Jets proved they were poor winners and poor losers in one season. Mike Greenberg, a Jets fan, said after their thrashing Sunday "Never has an organization talked so much and done so little."

    It's OK The Jets do suck! I said I take the season week for week. Didn't really think we were heading to the playoffs, had the at .500 season at best! had my fingers crossed but let down yet again. It's time to bench Sanchise let him walk the sidelines put on some headphones and WATCH the game! too bad this wasn't last year. He would of had a great mentor in Farve! But yeah time for him to hit the sidelines and just watch games be played!!!
