An irate Ne York City Mayor Bloomberg demanded Monday that prosecutors throw the book at Giants star Plaxico Burress for bringing a loaded handgun into a crowded midtown nightclub and accidentally shooting himself in the leg.

Bloomberg slammed New York-Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell and the Giants for not immediately reporting the shooting to police — cops learned of it from TV — and said it would be an "outrage" if Burress got special treatment.

"It's pretty hard to argue the guy didn't have a gun and that it wasn't loaded," Bloomberg said, lashing out at the man who caught the winning touchdown in the 2008 Super Bowl. "You've got bullet holes in and out to show that it was there."

Burress had a loaded Glock semiautomatic in his waistband at the Latin Quarter nightclub early Saturday, when it slipped down his pant leg and went off when he tried to grab it, police said.

New York law requires a minimum of 3½ years in jail for a conviction of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, the charge Burress faces.

I'm not a big fan of Mayor Bloomberg but here he is ABSOLUTELY CORRECT...THROW THE GUY AWAY.....Guys like Plaxico, Pac-Man Jones, Michael Vick and even Stephen Marbury in the NBA all have something in common. They all "just don't get it!!" Not to mention all these guys are a bunch of thugs who if they didn't play professional sports would probably be rotting in a state pen somewhere. Without getting all intellectual, over the last few years there is a new breed of athlete in the NBA and NFL. Basicly with the tatoos, the flashy cars, the jewelry and the entourages these guys are not living in the real world. They no longer can associate or comprehend the working guy who pays their salary by going to the games and buying tickets, apparel, etc. The majority of the world lives paycheck to paycheck and that is something that an athlete that has been coddled since probably High School dosen't care to understand. The other issue is that all of these guys are Black. Whether they think its cool to be this way or that they have to have "street cred." to be a thug says more about the Black mentality which is really sad in todays times.

Since the law is 3 1/2 years for carrying a loaded weapon, why shouldn't he face the same penalty as the other thugs who carry a loaded weapon??

I heard on WFAN NY this am, when a detective named "Tony" called in to the show he said that word around the precincts is that Burress took the gun out with the intention of "scaring" someone and that there is a witness to prove this or one that is willing to testify against him. If this is the case...look to see the penalties increased to a 7 year minimum.
I agree with Bloomberg in wanting to make his city a safe place to live and visit so if making an example of a troubled celebrity will help to aid him in that pursuit...as a resident of CT and frequent visitor to the City...I am all for it.
I am more interested to see what they do to Pierce and how the NFL handles the entire case.

Finally,a man who declines to take a salery from the city and earns $1.00/Year for being Mayor speaks up... Lord knows that the commissioner is not going to do a thing. Maybe a 4 game suspension and he can come back, like the rest of the NFL... I hope the bastard gets at least 3-1/2 years..

Its unfortunate to say the least, but if this was me or you(the normal shmoe posting on this site) we'd be thrown in jail no questions asked. Lets see how much preferential treatment Burress gets, its absurd how professional players, movie stars and etc are able to walk away with meaningless fines, reprimands, and community service while the average every day person gets little or no chance to vindicate ourselves. Kinda funny(not haha funny) if you went for a job interview and theses things showed up on your record there would be very little chance of getting the job, meanwhile you have these athletes, the Lindsay Lohans,Robert Downey Jr. and the Britney Spears of the world, all still having lucrative careers. Why is that?

As to Sleepless's post...the Detective also said that Burress plans to use two things in his defense: A) The fact that he didn't realize his temporary gun permit for the State of NY was expired and B) that after the Smith incident (in which Smith was allegedly held up at gun point on 11-25) he felt unsafe and brought the glock along for protection. He does not believe that either of these two stories are sufficient to disprove the State's case against him in where the only thing they really need to prove is that A) He was ILLEGALLY carrying a pistol, B) the pistol was loaded, discharged and it was all in a public place and C) He tried to cover up the act. The first thing that any student of Criminal Justice learns is that ignorance of the law is no excuse. Just because you didn't know your permit was expired doesn't mean you can get away with an act committed with the weapon even if following permit guidelines.

Bloomberg should let the DA do his/her job instead of voicing his opinions. His job is to run NYC. His job description does not include ranting publicly about an NFL wide out... I understand he wants to make sure that a wealthy man DOES NOT get off the hook but it is NOT his place to say anything. There are police officers and legal teams in place that work for you. Let them do their job.

D4L - I can see that argument playing out - having an expired permit is different than never having a permit at all, even though the result is the same (violation of a law). Honestly, Plax lives in NJ, works in NJ - keeping up with the paperwork for NYC can be so tiresome...
Anyway, I see the expired permit being a solid reason for a reduced sentence. Add in the recent Supreme Court ruling about the gun ban in DC, and this could honestly run all the way up the chain if Burress wanted to take it that far. He can afford the lawyers (and the NRA will likely back him if he goes this route)...
Note: I don't agree with the idea of reducing his sentence, but I see that it could happen easily enough.

bkwhoppa66....YOU are a f*%ing moron! Brilliant posting about wishing Bloomberg was the one who got shot and that Plaxico is just an idiot. Typical nonsense, I suppose you're one of those people that make excuses for the athletes, huh? Should we just cut him a break cause he's Black and was oppressed and came from a broken home? Or should we say its okay because its just a "cultural thing" and he has to keep his street cred?....98% of the world goes to work and obeys the laws and are productive members of society. I'm sick and tired of the other 2% from not being mature enough to accept resposibilty for their actions and those that either condone or make excuses for them.

"His job is to run NYC"...In a city where government scandal is as common as miniature poodle sized rats you think it is not the job of the Mayor to speak to the public he was hired to protect and let them know that he would not allow this case to be treated like so many others (getting mishandled and offenders potentially going free) and you think he is wrong? Do you even live in NY? Have you ever been to NY?
If you don't, I say go there and see if your statement that he should let them do their jobs will still be your stance and if you do live there I have one word for your post: WOW.
