NFL - Sports Rumors

On his personal blog, Smith34.com, Detroit Lions running back Kevin Smith(notes) predicted, no wait, promised the Lions will make the NFL Playoffs in 2009. It makes you wonder, did he watch the video tape?

"I won't make a prediction about how many games we're going to win, but I will say this: We will definitely make the playoffs this season.

"Believe it or not we weren't far off last year. Almost every game we could have won, we were one play or one player short. Except for Tennessee on Thanksgiving, they just came out and beat us to sleep. They manhandled us, but nobody else did.''

The Lions weren't far off? They were 0-16.

let's just hope they go 4 and 12 first. then they can talk about playoffs. Their still 1 or 2 drafts, (good ones) from doing anything very astonishing. Although playoffs this season would be wouldn't it?

This comment coming from the same guy that last year stated the Lions would make the playoffs and go to the Super Bowl in his rookie season. I don't believe any of the hype from K. Smith

We could really use a good season around here in Detroit. Being a Lions fan is tough. Nobody questions loyalty more than Cubs, Clippers and Lions backers. One year will be ours. Sometime, someday in the future. Name another Detroit/Michigan team that hasn't won a championship sometime in the last 30 years? There will be much rejoicing in this town when the Lions complete the collection of championships for the Michigan sports fan like me.
    Will it be this year?
    Not likely

The Lions are only one person short of the playoffs or even the Super Bowl, William Clay Ford! The only thing consistant about the Lion since WCF purchased the team in the early 1960's is the have been a bad team because of the team ownership and general management. We need a football team owner that knows football or is a good judge of football management that can turn the team over to a true football professional. These clowns we have now are not going to do it. Bobby Layne's curse in 1958 when he was traded to the Steelers, that the Lions will not win in 50 years has now expired so let's get it on!!!

i would say a premature declaration. i think the lions filled a lot of holes this offseason, and this is a new season, different brass I hope you are right Kevin, but there was no need to make this prediction unless it was for personal media attention.

I like Smith, and he has a great attitude, something a lot of Lions players have been lacking, but come on man. I think the Lions have a good shot of going 0-16 again because of their schedule, but I will give them 2 wins this year, and the number 1 overall pick in next years draft. The good thing is that there is light at the end of the tunnel and we are amassing big pieces of the puzzle, but we are still 2 or 3 years away from being a contender. GO GET SMITH !

I would love to see the Lions make the playoffs, but I just dont see it happening, I could see them maybe at best going 7-9, which would be huge and a giant step in the right direction,. If they can do that than have another soild draft and offseason than maybe next season they are in the playoffs...Go LIONS

I think he is still asleep. The Lions couldn't make the playoffs even if they played themselves every game next season. And who said a mind is a terrible thing to waste?

3-13 or 5-11 doesn't make the playoffs. You have to admire that he won't just lay down though. (Much like they did against the Titans)

Kevin Smith the filmmaker has a better chance a being a walk-on punter for any of the league's other teams and in so doing, making the playoffs

Guess Kitna left the Kool-Aid behind and Smith is drinking it. Obviously Marinelli didnt make him watch the game films last year...the offense was as bad as the defense (and he had what ....2 quality games). A large part of the defensive problems were because the offense was 3 and out way too often....make any defense play 36-40 minutes a game and of course it will be ugly. He needs to focus on what he can control (himself both physically & mentally) and leave the predictions to the prognosticators. If he doesnt agree then keep his mouth shut and prove the world wrong (he predicted something similar last season....guess his personally prediction record was as good as the teams record....0 wins). 4 wins would be impressive based on the lack of talent...5 or more would be a downright miracle. Kevin, for the record....you are not Barry Sanders (and it would take a second coming of Barry to change the fortunes overnight).
