NFL - Sports Rumors

Josh Cribbs is not the only unhappy camper at Cleveland Browns' camp this week. According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, 11th-year kicker Phil Dawson(notes) was a no-show at Browns voluntary minicamp this week in what could be a statement about wanting a new contract.

Neither Dawson nor his agent Neil Cornrich could be reached for comment.

Perhaps in anticipation of Dawson's absence, the Browns signed South Dakota State rookie kicker Parker Douglass to a two-year contract on Monday. He handled the placekicking chores in practice all week.

Dawson's representatives approached the Browns about a new contract last season, sources told the Plain Dealer.

In 2005, Dawson signed a five-year, $7.1 million extension that pays him $1 million this season and next season. He's one of the most accurate kickers in league history with an 82.8% field goal percentage. In 2007, he scored a career-high 120 points, tied for second-best in team history.

Dawson is a consistant kicker and probably should have his contrcact reviewed. If the Browns can't come to an agreement, then get rid of him.. cause like #1 ... he's just a kicker!

When you sign a contract you sign a contract...if anyone was doing poorly, would they ask for a restructured contract for less money? I don't think so!

Everything with the Browns has been a mess since they came back to the AFL and it looks like things will never change. I have lived and died with the Browns & Indians for 68 years but maybe the answer is to transfer the franchises somewhere else.

Oh how true your words are Wes W, the Browns would be utter fools to neglect their two only weapons on offense in Cribbs and Dawson.....yet sadly outside the Browns organization, the rest of the NFL considers yonder duo "special teams"

#7 .. yeah he is just a kicker and not the best in the NFL so what is the big deal... as a team we have more important things to worry about. I am more interested in saving Cribbs.

Why does the NFL even make players sign contracts?????? A five year deal is a five year deal, No? If, no matter what agreement you sign, It's all out the window in 12 months why even bother?

@ # 6 Hank if your such a great place kicker yourself, why aren't on the field somewhere instead of bad mouthing real athletes. I'm 99.9% sure your ass couldn't kick a 15 yard field goal, let alone a 50 yarder.

No Randy B, if teams in the NFL don't want to pay up, they just cut 'em. The greed is on both sides, not just the player. Teams will ask players to take a pay cut, and if they don't they get cut. Period.

And I don't think any guy off the street can kick a 50 yard field goal. You must have no idea how long 50 yards is. An average person probably can't even kick an extra point.

Don't get me wrong. I like Phil Dawson. I've met him a few times and he's always been a good guy. On the field he's been our best and most consistant player since we came back. I wish drafting Tim Couch and Courtney Brown would have turned out as well as signing Phil.
With that said when ever a player wants to renegotiate it rubs me the wrong way. I guess it depends on how I look at it. Is Phil a contractor who can sell his services where ever he wants? Or is Phil and employee under contract who has to fulfill that contract or get his ass sued off? History shows the NFL believes the former. So, if Phil can get a better deal and the Brown's believe they can't find a better deal from another contractor then it's a good deal for them.

Dawson is a nice guy and a decent (not great) kicker. Unfortunately the Browns have more pressing needs at the moment: just about every position. THey'll probably even go after Ron Mexico.

I agree with # 15 to an extent. If a player is being asked to do more for his team than what he had agreed upon, then the team should at least review the contract and make adjustments. The NFL is a union and the players have a right to dispute the contract if they feel they are being asked to do more than what they had agreed on. Cribbs is an outstanding player. I dont think he deserves a huge increase, but a sigificant one should be suffice. Cribbs didnt have a huge year for the Browns last year, but then again, name someone who did.
