NFL - Sports Rumors

Turns out the New York Jets may interview a Super Bowl-winning coach after all, except his name isn't Bill Cowher or Mike Shanahan. The Jets have contacted former Ravens coach Brian Billick, a person with knowledge of the head-coaching search said Sunday. An interview has yet to be scheduled, the person said, but there's a chance that may occur this week, the New York Daily News reported.

The ever-widening search for Eric Mangini's replacement still is in the early stages, but the two candidates generating the most buzz within the organization are Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and Brian Schottenheimer, the Jets' current offensive coordinator. Schottenheimer has been a dark-horse candidate from the outset, as the Daily News reported last week.

This should be a busy week for GM Mike Tannenbaum, who is presiding over his first coaching search. He's scheduled to meet today with Boston College coach Jeff Jagodzinski, but the school is threatening to fire him if he does the interview, according to ESPN.

Also this week: Cardinals assistant head coach Russ Grimm, and Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan, whose stock rose with yesterday's dominating wild-card victory over the Dolphins.

Jagodzinski doesn't appear to be a serious candidate; it may have been a favor to Brett Favre, who knows Jagodzinski from their years in Green Bay. He spent six seasons as a Packers assistant, including 2006 as the offensive coordinator.

The Jets also are showing interest in Colts defensive coordinator Ron Meeks, but an interview has yet to be scheduled, the person with knowledge of the search said. Meeks is a minority, which would put the Jets in compliance with the Rooney Rule. Every team with a head-coaching vacancy must interview at least one minority candidate.

I would love to see Brian Billick come to the Jets. A coach that would properly manage games, make winning play calls. He would know to bench an injured QB and play a backup, we could have gone at least 11-5 with the right decisions being made by the coach. With the Pro-Bowl team we have, the problems were clearly a lack of leadership and holding the proper people accountable! I would welcome Billick, he's not an emotionless kid with no feel for the game, like Mangina.

Nothing personal but watching a Eric Mangini press conference was brutal...5 hour energy pills and ton's of coffee were no match, he could put you to sleep, on another note I think he has the potential to be a descent coach someday. If we happen to land Brian Billick I would be happy...

Not a big fan of Billick's but he did win a SB. They ran him out of town in Balt. after last year's debacle, though he would be an upgrade over clueless Mangini. I can't believe Clev. is apparently enthralled with this guy! He'll set that organization back another 5 years as well, good luck.

possum, are you assuming meeks is no good, just a token. he is a possible canidate. they hired edwards who was no good, so i don;t think he is a token. he has a shot, but then again we hired kotite, so maybe if meeks has a 2 year old they would have a shot too.

Hire Billick, a proven, solid coach, and let him coerce Tannenbaum to draft a top QB like Bradford, Tebow, Harrell or McCoy for use in 2010. Aquire a 2nd tier NFL seasoned QB or Matt Cassel to run the offense in 2009. I don't think Kelly Clement can handle the job.

Chad Pennington Huh? That's all I read last week-"Chad's Great, Favre sucks". Favre is the only reason the Jets won 9 games; not because of the OLine, which was awful and gave no protection, not because the Defense because there was no Defense, but because Mangenius cuz he and the rest of staff couldn't gameplan!! Face it, Favre was more of a help than a hinder!! Good luck with Clemens! Brett...please retire so you don't have to play for such losers anymore!!

aaron i couldnt agree more Favre please retire you did enough damage 22 INT's was to much for any team to handle. Now that I got that out of the way Woody needs to sell the team to someone that wants to win not just sell PSL's I'm so tired of this team it makes me sick bum coaches and over the hill QB's what a legacy.

we should've done our homework when it came to drafting players. In two different drafts we miss out on franchise QB's 1.jay Culter 2. Joe Flacco the replacement for Pennington not Favre. If they had drafted anyone of those players we would not be looking for a new coach.
