The most difficult draft pick for the Jacksonville Jaguars to sign might be first-round choice Derrick Harvey, a defensive end from Florida.

As the eighth overall pick, Harvey likely will want a deal similar to the one signed by last year's No. 8 pick, Atlanta Falcons defensive end Jamaal Anderson — a five-year deal that could max out at $31 million, with more than $15 million in guarantees. Harvey is represented by Ken Kremer of CAA football, an agency that includes Tom Condon, who represented former Jaguars quarterback Byron Leftwich when he was a holdout in 2003.

The Jaguars would like Harvey in camp on time because they want him to make an immediate impact on their pass rush this season, and a holdout could be a setback for him.

Paul Vance, who negotiates contracts for the Jaguars, said the two sides are continuing to have discussions.

My comment it... is right in the article.
Same Agent that worked with Leftwich.
Don't go down that samn road Harvey, prove your worth and work just l ike Garrard and you will be paid well for your work. That simple.
As well, I think salary should be given with work performance "bonus"
I am sick as well of these overpriced before proven players.
As much as I am a Gator, NFL and College are two different games.

and why wouldn't he get that deal? this is stupid to me. First the contract for rookies are a joke...BUT if they are continuing to do what they've done in the past, they take last year's same pick (which in this case is a DE as well) and add a certain percentage to it...NOT that tough Jags. Also, they traded a tremendous amount to get this guy...so he obviously has the upper hang here. Give him 5% more than last year's same pick...

The NFL needs a FIRM policy on rookies.
Every rookie should have the same contract, period.
200 + MILLION Americans work harder everyday to earn a living, but these spoiled rotten kids demand more money every year for 6 months work.
I say give'em $ 7.25 an hour minimum wage and see if they respect their talent and not waste it drinking/driving/drugging and beating their "ho's".
Play well, you earn your "huge" contract.
    Play bad, and see ya.
This way maybe the NFL can keep ticket prices down a bit.
    P.S.
Roger Goodell is nothing more than a Robert Kraft rear-end licker.
By all means let's not punish cheaters.

Screw giving rookies a ton of money!!!!!!!!They haven't proved anything! Instead donate that extra money to Randy Moss & Ricky Williams pot fund, Pacmans & Bensons partying, or give it to Chad Johnson to just shut him up!

the nfl has real issues with the rookie pay scale, its outrageous. you see quality veterans wanting big money and getting MAYBE half of the guaranteed money these unproven guys get. its ridiculous, you're almost better trading your first rounders for the proven guys and building your frikkin team that way. you could probably get two pro bowl quality guys(financially) for a top 5 PROSPECT that isn't a lock to be a pro bowler nowadays...

He's overated, just like all of those injury prone florida gators who are in the nfl.
Javon Kearse (check his stats for the past 4 years (He no longer can play a full season)
lito shepard (cant play a full season if his life depended on it)
Fred Taylor (cant play a full season if his life depended on it)
Rex Grossman (cant play a full season if his life depended on it)
Deshawn Wynn ( Missed most of rookie season)
Jarvis Moss ( Missed most of rookie season)
    Want more?

hey Perk,he is just trying to get more than what he was paid at Florida.he has to BUY his own car now and the playbook will be much more difficult than letting someone else take tests for him on top of the fact that he WILL have to take drug tests.Still,if he has less than 10 kids than 2 million should be a nice base salary.

You have to understand that these rookies(especially Gator players)are probably only able to sell pizza so they need to get every penny while they can or they will end up selling crack in your 'hood.(wasn't college football competitive and entertaining BEFORE they started handing out scholarships to thugs who got a 500 on the SAT?)

Give the babies the money BUT have cause in the contract that if they get hurt or in trouble with the law withing 3 years of playing in the NFL, they have to play all the money bk and they go to a base pay of 50,000 for a year. Must of these rookies do not last 2 years in the NFL now. Leaf was a fcking joke.

I am a Jaguars fan. This is disgusting to me. None of the rookie pool have even set foot on the playing field in any kind of NFL game. he rookies should have a set slary for a two year contract, after which they become a restricted free agent. Then they can go after what they are worth either more money or less. Tieing the teams down with five year gauranteed contracts is ridiculous. It is just a mirror as to what is wrong with many things in the world these days. If they want guarantees, then they should be in the form of performance bonuses through the contract. Too many misses in the rookie class to merit the money they think they are worth.

Well just like every body I think the whole money thing is getting out of hand you can't tell me that a rookie that never played in the pro's should get that much someone needs to step in and fix the problem because it is not getting any better any time soon it costing more and more to go to the game and you can't tell me this has nothing to do with it

I understand everyone being tired of rookies holding out, but remember how brutal the NFL is. They don't even want to give Hall of Fame legends help with their medical bills. A team will sign for 50 million then cut you 3 years into the deal. So don't get mad as more business savvy players enter the NFL. Why not get as much as you can, because the first time you lose a step, or stop performing they'll cut you anyway. If I was a rookie I'd want as much as I could get too knowing that this league is only going to use me up and spit me out, then forget I ever played by morning.
Which is why I believe a lot of athletes who excelled in college football decide to play in the NBA or MLB. Those league are a little more professional about their relations with players.

Jacksonville already gave up to much just to draft the guy.........
and now they might actually let him con them into more money?
You need to prove you can compete at this level (not that I think he can't), before you can demand more money.

It is crazy I remember when (excuse my spelling) Timanga Biatapatuka held out for the Carolina Panthers and he turned out to be a bust like many of these rookies. You can't blame them thoug, if the owners are willing to pay them, then just like anyone else in any other profession, they are going to get all that they can.

Everyone is slamming on the athlete. But it's actually sports agents that drive these issues. They convince the rookie that they can get a certain amount of money. And what sane person (who believes their agent) would not want to get what they can. Anyone in the athlete's position would do the same. If you want to blame these ridiculous salaries, blame the owners and the agents.
