NFL - Sports Rumors

If the Detroit Lions reach an agreement with their No.1 selection, does that mean the St. Louis Rams then have the ability to negotiate with players of their choosing with the No.2 selection?

Profootballtalk.com asked the question? The answer has always been "no.''

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told Profootballtalk.com that the league hasn't made a decision as to whether the Rams will be permitted to negotiate a deal with one or more potential candidates, saying that it's a "[m]oot point right now."

The league took a different position last year. After the Dolphins signed tackle Jake Long, the Rams were not permitted to negotiate with potential targets at No. 2.

"That has been our policy," Aiello said at the time. "Only the team with the first pick can negotiate and sign the player."

It's just because the ESPN TV ratings may go down if the first few picks were signed early. The answer is always "follow the money"

I don't know why they make a big deal of this. The salary is basically predetermined by the pick number and position. They will refer to last years draft with a slight increase. I strongly feel that this has to be addressed during the next CBA. You have a team like Detroit who will have to pay a huge contract to a rookie qb. If he is a bust, which is a very high possibility, they have this contract on their books and can't get sign quality free agents. The rookies should get a modest 3 year contract, this gives them time to learn the pro game and keeps them hungry for their next big contract. This would allow bad teams to draft young talent as well as have money to bring in veteran leaders thus building a better "team".

You would think the Player's Union would have negotiated for the veterans getting more money...and the rookikies having to 'pay their dues', so to speak. The more from the pot taken by the youngsters, less is let for those who have taken years of hits. Those who worked out this mess, deserve to wallow in it.

actually I think they don't let people negotiate past one is because what would be the point of draft day. Everyone would be signed already.
