NFL - Sports Rumors

“MichaelWhen San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Michael Crabtree(notes) ended his ridiculous holdout a few weeks ago, the word from the team was that they would be working him slowly, getting him to memorize the third-down and end-zone packages and growing from there.

But the word now is that Crabtree could be starting this week, according to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat. Coach Mike Singletary says it's a "strong possibility," so it sounds pretty likely.

This means split end Josh Morgan(notes), the Niners' second-leading receiver, will probably be out of the starting lineup. And you can bet Morgan isn't happy about this rookie taking his slot.

Morgan knows the deal. He's being a team player. Next year he''ll start alongside Crabtree when Isaac Bruce retires.

I think they should have Morgan and Crabtree out there, with Bruce and Hill coming in on 3-4 wr sets. I think it's a bit too soon for him to start, but we'll see. I feel bad for Morgan, but we need a spark on offense badly! Lets go Niners!

One of the better college players, and with the holdout, he will be under a microscope for awhile. If he can produce, it will help the niners get some respect back that they have lost. (IMO).... They have started out well this year but they are still a good QB away from being where they should be.

he has earned the right to play if he knows his stuff and is performing well in practice. the only thing i have any concern about is if he's prepared to take a hit. yes I think this is a good thing for Morgan, one of the future starters for years to come. He has less pressure to be a #1 type of guy for now, and he is motivated to get into the starting lineup. Plus, he knows the slot position (knows all three inside and out according to the coaches) so we will have a lot of talent on the field. Bruce is a great mentor and I'm glad he's around for these younger WR's.

What's there to lose by starting Crabtree now ? Our offence sucks. Hill better step up and hit the recievers in stride ala Montana & Young. If Hill has another bad game then it will be Smith & of course he'll suck then Davis will lead the team. Nate's the man . Then we will score pts.

I think If Crab gets in there and Gets some game time experiance, Than it will be great for the team. Our Recieving core is Pretty much nothing right now. Our QB isn't doing great, But with gore coming back, and Crab getting some Much needed Experiance, I think the 49ers can go into the stretch and get into the playoffs.

Why not put him in the slot with Morgan and Bruce on the outside? With Frank Gore out you're going to want to run a one back anyways. And Crabtree isn't a real burner, I see him as more of a possession type receiver.

I say start Crabtree and Morgan together and bench Bruce. Morgan has noooo speed but has hops and hands, Bruce just has a pair of hands, so Crabtree should excel while out there. No defense will double Bruce but, if you throw Crabtree and Morgan out there it gives us a better chance of winning. It might even open up more room in zone coverage for V. Davis the real "Ocho Cinco"...

This is true, but he will start in the slot over Arnaz Battle. Battle will be the 4th receiver and handle punts. Morgan and Bruce will still get the start. Poor Jason Hill is being pushed back with this. He'll be a solid #2 or #3 somewhere next year.

just after crabby was signed, singletary answered questions about him trying to juke the db's in practice and immediately, clements picked him off! boy better wake up and get used to the speed of the nfl. this is not going to be like deion sanders training camp where he burns a few underachievers, gets a pat on the back and a candy prize. this is the nfl. if ever there is a chance to look good in a game, he will start his nfl career against a subpar secondary in houston so he he should produce (or atleast have the chance). IF he does, i just hope it is not a false alarm for when the niners need to spread the offense against quality defenses they face later. ala indy gb and philly!

wow..there's alot of crabtree haters in here. and you call yourselves niner fans?? the niner faithful huh? what a joke.. instead of having faith in him you want to go and call him a prima donna and all this other unnecessary bull [profane]?? think about it.. heyward-bey is making 38 million as a raider. all crabtree wanted was an amount close to it.. he got it. business was handled now he's coming to show everyone he's a playmaker. He obviously wants to play for us because he's learned the playbook in a week. that's unheard of. so when crabtree starts producing make sure you dont give him props or anything because then you'd be a hypocrite. Go niners.

i dont see why we need to start crabs so quickly...let him learn the offense! maybe throw him in there for some deep passes or w/e. let him return some kicks to get him up to speed. its not like we really need him now. i mean yea our passing game has blown the past couple of games, but we can get thru another couple games without him...especially with Gore coming back.
