Favre asking for reduction in playbook

Despite a successful preseason debut, Brett Favre hinted he's battling information overload and has asked the Jets' coaches to scale back.

"I don't want to think, I want to react," Favre told 1050 ESPN Radio.

The Jets' new quarterback said he had a "long talk" Monday with Eric Mangini, adding, "There's got to be some middle ground somewhere, and that's what we're trying to find."

Favre said the Jets' system is "completely different" from his old Green Bay playbook.

Interestingly, he said Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer is trying to incorporate some Green Bay concepts into his own playbook.

"I think the good thing is, we're talking about it and we're being smart about it," Favre said.

Favre went into his first game with 30 to 40 plays in his game plan, according to Mangini. If Favre was confused, he hid it well, as he completed five of six passes for 48 yards and a touchdown.

He played only two series (14 snaps) against the Redskins, and he hopes to play a lot more this week against the Giants.

"The only way you can get your feet wet and get used to the guys and the offense is by playing," he said.

It makes no difference , Favre does not follow any plays except for his slant pass over the middle.

It will be midseason before he has the whole playbook down. I hope to see him do well. After all, he is one of my fantasy qbs.

I hope Mangini listens to Farve, his ELDER. we're talking about one of the greatest offensive players of all time here. he knows what works and what doesn't, and more importantly, he can adapt so fast and save plays that appear dead (just like his TD pass to keller, with the play originally intended for a farve to franks pass). when you consider that he's already learned 30-40 play and an average of 3 options, that's 90-120 possible plays at his disposal. when you consider that on average, a team gets 70-100 offensive snaps at most in a game, a reduction of what is probably a 60-80-play game book to 50 might not be a bad idea. they've still got plenty of time to work this out anyways.

When the Jets got him I predicted that he would come in and buck heads with Man Gina soooooo
the rest of the team is comfortable with the plays and he is not...change everything so he is comfortable
and the he!! with the rest of the team.....isn't that why GB didn't want him back?

Who cares? Hes still going to throw 3 interceptions a game. All time league leader and proud of it... See how well that goes over in New York.

There's too much information for him to handle? No way, I'd never believe it, not Brett Favre. Big Jim has got it right, he want to change around a teams system to fit him, instead of learning to fit into it.

B.S. - Lol. I've been a fan of Favre (GB fan for life) since childhood, but yeah I have to agree that you see him do that hail mary shot all the time and it's always a "miracle" that it hits, because hail mary don't work THAT well unless you got two Randy Moss down field.

big jim, you tailor a system to the players you have, not the other way around. GB didn't want him back, because they already tailored their system and gameplan to aaron rodgers. if they had forced aaron to the bench again this year, aaron would most likely leave in 2010, leaving the packers without their QB of the future. they already invested 3 years in rodgers, grooming him for the GB offense.
its also not like the Jets are changing everything... he's asking for a reduction in the number of plays they run, not a change to the system. we already know they have 30-40.

phillfan, atleast the jets have a QB that can stay healthy for an entire season. o and mcnabbs had his fair share of 3 interception games. and Brett Farve never threw up in a huddle in the superbowl.

11 - saying brett farve doesn't want to fit into the system is ridiculous. Schottenheimer is the one incorporating green bay concepts into HIS playbook. and thats called being smart. he's got a guy who's defined the green bay offense for the last 17 seasons and for most of those 17 seasons Green Bay's had one of the best offenses in the league.
i'd also say Brett fit in pretty well in saturdays preseason game, but hey, lets just ignore facts and hate on brett farve.

Unfortunately, the word "reduction" has gained a negative conotation. I wonder if Brett would have asked that the playbook be "reviewed" for redundancies, or "streamlined" for better play calling, or looked for ways to make the offensive system more "efficient" if he would have come off sounding more like a wise veteran wanting to make his new team better than a complaining newcomer who can't get his Green Bay days out of his play-calling mind? At any rate, I think he is actually trying to make the system and his team better; unfortunately, using the term "reduction" wasn't the best choice of words.

MLB I'll stick to what I said..GB spent the entire off season tailoring the offense to Rodgers, then favre wants back in the entire team had to learn all the changes GB said they had invested to much time in the changes to go back to him GB has stuck with what worked for favres entire career time has moved on this is how football is played today with an offensive coordinator Its been said that Mangini has the biggest offensive playbook of any team, now its just gonna get bigger....the jets have been tailoring there system to the TEAM not to one man..he had a good run in GB playing old time football lets see if the primadonna for once in his professional career take direction from some one other than himself

big jim, old time football? the west coast offense isn't "old time" football, lol. farve has always taken direction from his coaches. name one of his former coaches who've said anything about not loving to coach farve? his former QB coach, who's with the vikings, wanted him so bad it almost led to tampering charges.

farve is making the right decision here, letting his coaches know now rather than later that he's having trouble absorbing all of the new information. in the end, this will make the team better offensively. as pointed out in #20, they can cut out redudant plays and plays that they think won't work well.
at the end of the day, mangini will still be a defensive minded coach and brett farve will still be older than him and with a hell of a lot more offensive experience. he's also a class act in every way, from the way he's talked to coles to the way he's talking to his coaches now.
