NFL - Sports Rumors

“ErikIt hasn't been a fun year for Erik Mangini. After the excitement of getting an NFL head-coaching gig, Mangini came back to earth when he realized it was with the Cleveland Browns. He had a general manager that he didn't like George Kokinis until he recently was canned. Good news, except that it put more pressure on Mangini to deliver and save his own skin.

His 1-7 record is not helping him one bit with front-office support, fan support, and now even player support. A tipping point of sorts has been reached in which players have finally reached the comfort zone of speaking out against Mangini publicly.

Running back Jamal Lewis(notes) is apparently leading the way. He says the team works too hard in practices: "The talent is there. There's talent all over this room, young and old," he said. "At the same time, that talent's got to be able to be ready for Sunday and to be fresh for Sunday and be ready to go out and be efficient on Sunday. You can work hard as you want. You can work all day, seven days a week all the way up to Sunday in practice. But at the same time, if you're going to work like that, then maybe on Sunday you're probably not going to get what you want out of your players."

Anybody want to lay wagers that Mangini takes the advice of Lewis and goes easy on his players next week?

Jamal speaking out is a good thing, I hope he keeps opening up to the media, to let everone know what goes on behind the scene. We need to get a President of personnel in there quickly and someone qualified. Learner as we know doesn't know how to run a football organization, but I'm glad he finally came to his wits about this. This may be the biggest move yet since they came back in 1999. If he gets this right things may finally start heading in the right direction. Go Dawgs!

How he ever became a coaching prospect I'll never know. How do you go from associate defensive coach in charge of film to head coach I'll never know.....when Bellichick told him he wasn't ready he should have listened instead of stomping off and taking the first job that was offered to him

That's exactly what this team needs, another whining millionaire saying he's got to work too hard.
Great example Jamal. You quit weeks ago, why not just retirre now.

Mangini you got man boobs dude. You should pracitce yourself as hard as you practice your team. ON the other hand, who cries about how a coach is working you out? Sounds like a bunch of panty waste out in Cleveland. Man up, even high school kids practice for 3 hours.

Thank God the Jets got rid of him. He seems to be a cancer wherever he goes. Rex Ryan was an upgrade over this jackoff.

The Plain Dealer's headline contains the word "players", as in "more than one."
Yet they name only Jamal Lewis. In fact, there's nothing that even states that any other players have said a word. Just a vague "apparently, Lewis is leading the way" BS line.
Here's a novel approach- report news that is backed up by facts instead of piling on and vilifying someone based on supposition, innuendo, or hearsay (P.D. doesn't even really have actual hearsay in this case.)
Funny how there are 4 or 5 other teams in the NFL who also only have one win- and who's coaches look like disasters, yet the only one getting a daily beating from the national press is Mangini. And the reason for that is because "journalism" has turned into nothing more than monkey-see-monkey-do.
    Pathetic.

Holmgren isn't the answer for the Browns - total control didn't work at all in Seattle and they had more money, more talent, and less dysfunction. Give us Ernie Accorsi and Bill Cowher !!!

This franchise is run by Lerner. THis clown doesn't know anything about running a successful NFL franchise. Unless Lerner can change his ways and pull his hea dout of his azz, this team will always be a a loser. Mangini? How do you see this guy walk into your office and say "yeah , thats the coach i want"? It's a joke at the top. But the real joke is on the fools giving this franchise money !!!

He ended up in Cleveland with a GM he didn't like? He picked the GM himself. Miller, do your homework. You should practice three hours a day.

...and the beat goes on...Lewis has always been a hard worker, even in the off-season, so maybe there's something to his claim. He's said other things too, like he doesn't want to be a 'baby sitter' and be teaching the young players. For sure he no longer deserves to wear the 'C' captain's patch.

Lewis is an idiot and felon. If you are the captain why don't you tell your coach the concerns like a man instead of letting it out in the media. That does not excuse Mangini for the terrible way he has handled things but Lewis is no better. And this comes from a "captain" who praised Balitmore players for bringing him in to the fold and teaching him when he was a young player, who now has the opportunity to do the same for his young players but he doesn't want to have to "baby sit." Take your bad attitude and 3.6 yrds per carry because all you do is "fall forward" when you run and sit on the bench, get a real leader in there.

Lol this writer sux!!! Poor Mangini? Hes the dumba$$ that hired the GM in the first place. Not to mention hes also the dumba$$ that passed on both Mathews and Maulaluga to pick up a bunch of 2nd tier players that will never amount to anything. Hes also the dumba$$ that made such a big secret out of the QB situation and divided reps between the QBs with a inexperienced receiving corp and then scratches his head and wonders why he has poor production out of both positions. Hes also the dumba$$ that kept the worst corner in the league(Mcdonald). Hes also the same dumba$$ that hired an offensive coordinator that couldnt put together a successful game plan at the high school level. Hes also the same dumba$$ that let go of the two best receivers on the team. Their are pre-madonnas on every team in the NFL!!! You just jhave to know how to coach them!!!! I would go on but my fingers are tired. Mangini was the laughingstalk of NFL coachs and now he has made the Browns the laughingstalk of teams!!!

ANYBODY would be a better head coach than Mangini...................but this works out since the rumour is that Tom Cable will be out of Oakland next year, just in time for the Maginimobile. From the Jets to the Browns to the Raiders....................Mangini's specialty, making bad teams worse.

#6 Dan W, Mark Miller does this all the time. He said Hasselbeck was being replaced by Seneca Williams (not Seneca Wallace), and Miller is usually good for one misspelled name or incorrect name each week. He's known as the Champagne of sports writers (Miller the Champagne of beers).
Plus, in this case, the story is wrong as well. He states "after the excitement of getting an NFL head coaching gig", when this is his 2nd gig. Clearly, Miller doesn't know that (why, I don't know, maybe Miller was prepping for his SAT's).
"He had a general manager that he didn't like George Kokinis until he recently was canned."Every fan knows that Mangini requested Kokonis as GM, after Mangini was hired, and they were friends. Kokonis getting fired was a signal to Mangini, not his request.
Miller is clearly not the Chapagne of sports writers, he is the Pabst Blue Ribbon on sports writers.

God I am sick of all the Mangini bashing from the media and commenters. How dare he get rid of all that great talent that went 4-10 last year. The Browns paid Winslow millions while he recovered from injuries he got doing wheelies on a motorcycle and as soon as he recovered all he did was whine about wanting more money. He has never fully recovered, can't block to help the running game, committed a ton of penalties, and still was demanding a new long term contract which would have been a terrible gamble because of his health. Cleveland got what they could for him and he got his contract in Tampa Bay who have managed to go 1-7 also. Braylon was leaving at the end of this season anyway and again, the Browns were smart to get what they could. Now, Lewis, who was elected Captain by those players he no longer wants to "babysit" goes to the media to whine that the practices are too hard. In the longer version of this story he admits that he has never said a word about this to Mangini. Some team Captain he is! I understand why he is frustrated to be on a rebuilding team at this stage of his career, but he was willing enough to take Cleveland's money when Baltimore no longer had any use for him. I remember less than a year ago everyone was complaining that Crennel was too easy on the players and that they had become spoiled brats. Well, fans, it seems to me you got what you wanted and we have a new coach who is trying to change that "Country Club" atmosphere you all complained about. Guys with that approach aren't usually the touchy feely type that the media loves. The P.D. still hasn't forgiven Mangini for firing all their back door sources in the front office. It's fair to question this year's draft picks, especially 2nd round, but hindsight makes so many seem so brilliant. Cleveland drafted for need at WR and it is way too early to judge. Would you really feel better if we had 50 Million tied up in Sanchez and no OL to protect him. You all are idiots if you think Cowher or Schottenheimer or anyone else is going to stroll into Cleveland and waive a magic wand and take the Browns to the Superbowl. You can talk about and long for all those great Browns teams of the past, but we are not those teams. We are an expansion team still searching for stability and changing coaches every couple of years is a piss poor way to achieve it. Have a little patience. We have an owner with deep pockets and a genuine desire to win. It's pretty clear to me that winning in the NFL against established teams is just not as easy as all of you armchair Coaches and GMs think it is.

I would love to see what all you people write. Who is the most disliked person in Cleveland Sports?
Learner? Dolan? Mangini? Shapiro? Or is there some one else that is disliked more than these that I just wrote? I would ask who is the most liked but that would be James, so that is a no brain er.
