NFL - Scoop Du Jour

Cleveland Browns GM Tom Heckert made an attempt to trade with the St. Louis Rams for the No. 1 pick in next week's draft, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

It doesn't appear that the talks went too far since the highest pick the Browns could trade is the No. 7 spot, and the Rams seem pretty set on taking Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford with the top selection.

New Cleveland honcho Mike Holmgren told the paper, "I don't want to pull the rug out from everybody on our first draft choice. [Bradford is] a coveted young man. To be able to go up and change somebody's mind ahead of us, you'd have to mortgage the ranch. I don't think in the real world — I absolutely love the player, as do a lot of people — in the real world, we're probably going to go in a different direction."

That different direction could be Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen, who Holmgren apparently wasn't crazy about until he met him. And even now he's only got faint praise for the guy: "I like him. He's a good football player. He can play the position," Holmgren told the Plain Dealer. "This won't be the last time I say something and people go, 'Oh, why did he say that?' I said it. I have my reasons and I have to leave it at that."
