NFL - Sports Rumors

According to a report on Bengals.com, the agent for Cincinnati Bengals No. 1 pick Andre Smith(notes) is going to start his negotiations just below New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez's(notes) deal at No. 5 for $28.5 million guaranteed and that the Bengals are going to start at the $21 million guaranteed the Jets gave linebacker Vernon Gholston(notes) at No. 6 last year.

In the past the Bengals and other teams have agreed to fairly easy triggers, such as 35 to 45 percent play time. For instance, Keith Rivers(notes) didn't hit that last year because of his broken jaw but he's expected to reach it this year. But with an unsigned CBA beyond 2010 and the economy of the league and country still up in the air, will teams want to protect themselves even more by making sure they get production for their millions? With Gholston on the verge of being declared a bust, are the Jets just sick over that $21 million?

It may well turn out the most intriguing part of the deals in the top 10 aren't the money, but what they have to do to get the money. With the holiday completed, look for there to be some contact between the Bengals and agent Alvin Keels in the next week or so, according to the Bengals.com report.

This process can really screw up the kid's learning curve, especially if the agent tells him that he'll get more money by not going to training camp until there's a contract in hand. Andre says he's going to camp regardless of a deal, which is nice to hear, but could be all talk too. The Bengals made a smart move to move Collins to RT and announce it early enough so that if Andre does hold out and doesn't get the snaps needed before September, they can name Collins the starter and not be too impacted by all of this. Hopefully that won't happen, and the process goes smoothly.

And they wonder why these kids have so many problems , he hasn't played a down and hits the lottery, this is why the NFL is a joke.

As a Bengals fan I'm looking forward to Smith getting to camp and showing everyone why he could very easily have been the #1 overall pick. But the NFL needs to implement some kind of rookie salary cap, and the only reason you need is to read the article about the 2005 Draft Class. That 1st Round may end up with the highest percentage of bad picks ever.

LBH the bengals had the best NFL draft and this year Palmer and Johnson will be healthy who usally score at least a TD against you every game they decide to keep benson as their back could improve thier. Their O-Line is going to be way better, and the steelers are old on the defensive side of the ball and wiil run ouut fo gas before the end of the regular season.

I agree these salaries for players that haven't played a down are absurd, but happy to see Mr. Brown make a commitment to try and win some games. Has to be the cheapest man in the whole Greater Cincinnati area.

The NFL needs a rookie salary cap similar to the NBA, as #11 posted look at the article of how bad the 2005 draft was and think of all of the wasted guaranteed money that is now handicapping those teams and almost ensuring that they will be picking #1-5 in the 2010 draft. Plyers in the NBA are well paid, but they had to prove their worth before they were awarded financial security for the lives of their grandchildren. Stafford is already set for life and he hasn't proved he is worthy of the league minimum.
