NFL - Sports Rumors

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid isn't happy about it, but cornerback Asante Samuel(notes) has decided to skip at least some of the team's volunteer camp this week, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The Eagles' well-compensated cornerback did not show up Monday as the team resumed the full-squad camp that started with four workouts last week. No direct statement was made by the team about Samuel's absence, and because this camp is voluntary, the Eagles cannot take any disciplinary action.

Although it is not unusual for NFL players to skip voluntary camps, it is typically something that is done by a player who is unhappy with his contract situation. Sheldon Brown(notes), the Eagles' other projected starter at cornerback, falls into that category. Brown is skipping the entire voluntary eight-day camp.

Samuel, who signed a six-year, $57.14 million deal as a free agent before last season, apparently wants to continue his off-season conditioning at his home in Florida. Given his contract, it is understandable that Reid would be disappointed in Samuel's decision to abandon the team's final scheduled workouts before training camp opens late next month, the Inquirer reported.

He's a veteran... He knows what he has to do to be ready for the season. Samuel is not the one that Andy Reid should be worried about.

Would he have skipped voluntary workouts with the Patriots? Maybe that's why Belicheat let him walk last year.

I guess they will just have to make the voluntary workouts mandatory. Otherwise, you can't cry in your beer when players don't show up for voluntary workouts. That's why they call them voluntary. You don't have to workout if you don't want to.

I thought it was a "voluntary" work out??? Doesn't that give Asante the option of going? WTF? Fatboy needs to eat another box of doughnuts, maybe buy a bag of weed from his kids.

LMAO@#14...Hey MR Know it All, the camps are set up so that the Vets can get a better feel of what the new FA, and the Draft rookies are all about...Bellichik wouldnt have released him if he had been more of a team player, and so with FA, and the draft the Pats were able to release his over-paid ass...Now the squabble starts with the FilthyFowlz before the season even begins...If he "knows" so much why even take part in any of the mini- or training camps????..I mean the lucrative contract that he was given, ahhh, whats a few thousand dollars to a perfect specimen like Samuel...Just another proof positive that reid cant control whats happening in his HOME what makes him think he can control what happens on the team?...JMO...ITK, your right to a degree, the Fowlz have been up on the East the last 10 years, but dude uhhhh, you guys cant seem to win when it counts...NEVER could either...Youve been to the SB twice and got the Hell kicked out of you both times...So whats to brag...Wanna go to the past well how about this...Dallas 55-44 all time against a sorry no SB wins Fowlz team...Hows this, a fluke assed play last year (MCScabb overthrowing Curtis) cost you another SB appearance...uhhhh, where were the FOWLZ in the playoffs 2 year ago when the GNATS won the SB?...oohhhh yeah, they didnt make the playoffs...So heres what we do, lets just forget the past and dwell on this year...You guys lost 75% of your defensive production to FA(Dawkins, Sheppard, Considine, and Thomas), and dont have a proven WR(Desean Jackson, ehhh maybe) and even though you got the guy from Missouri, hes 2-3 years from being any deep threat...Put in perspective, look at it this way...Your players were healthier and more prepared to meet the onslaught we had in the final 4 games last year(JMO, but we had almost, almost the same record as you guys, but you didnt have to take on the 1st , 2nd, 3rd, and 4th ranked defenses all in a row)...Im not making excuses for Dallas, Im just being objective which you peeps in FilthyTown never have been...I mean another point being, just 10 games into the season last year, you guys were ready to throw not only your coach, but QB under the bus...WTF????...Anyway back to the season...We didnt exactly come out of the 4 game Hell that we went into in December last year exactly shinning but when you consider we had a QB who was injured coming back, a very short roster of RB in Choice(by the way he was a Rookie, and put up more yardage than all of the other RB did against Pittsburgh and Baltimore), a depleted secondary, and all of the other injuries we had to our starters we did OK...not great, or up to expectations, but we tried...Lets see how we do this year, with our DISTRACTIONS gone...with our Healthy starters...We got a New Stadium, and we got a bunch of young, strong, and healthy draftees that have something to prove, and hmmm, Im of a mind that they are going to do just that...So go ahead and believe all that hype about how great your Defense is and how McScabb is the best QB in the NFC....good luck with that...FEAR THE STAR

Who’s your #1 WR this year? It can’t be the same guy that could not get opened with T.O. and Witten being doubled team?

Well its already been reported that Asante is staying home to deal with family issues. So you all can stop all the speculation now. Its voluntary... get off his back. He'll be breaking up passes like usual come September.
Joseph Y... your post is hilarious. That just wreaks of a Dallas fan being salty that his cowgirls continue to under-achieve and be a disappointment. As long as Romo is behind center, you have no chance beyond November!
FEAR THE STAR.... pssht, gimme a break. You need to fear that Philly defense who was #3 last year... who will be returning 10 starters and have an average age of 26! ...And dont start with the Dawkins stuff... I love the guy, but the Birds are notorious for letting guys go right before their decline.

Glennb, dnlhrrmnn, Anthony...did you even read my post...as always even though you have nothing, nothing to brag about (I mean o, nada, zip when it comes to SB wins)...and your bragging about the team your bringing back...That is hilarious considering your starters werent even in for 25% of the plays on the field...26 years old?...hmmmthat is funny, cause JMO but that right there is why you were a mediocre team last year(I mean you only made the PO cause of a tie-breaker situation) and you act like a 9-6-1 season in which we saw the disgraceful benching of an overweight, and underpaid QB, and the hilarious media coverage of your disgraced coach son get put not only in a Halfway House but prison, being boo-ed in Philthytown...thats the hilarious part...But Im not going to go back to the past, and Im curious to see what great things this team is going to do with all the dissent in their locker rooms with Brown, and Samuel already discgruntled players...FEAR THE STAR...
